Abstract: Failures are localized through the use of a Tandem Connection along a segment of a transmission path (P) to be monitored, non-intrusive intermediate Tandem Connection monitors (M), and temporary Tandem Connection sources created along the path segment in the case of a failure (F) in order to forward information about the fault location at least in downstream direction but preferably also in upstream direction. In particular, a failure adjacent network element (N3) detects the failure and activates a temporary tandem connection source function (TS3d, TS3u). This function creates a valid tandem connection signal and insert therein a failed link identifier (TTI). The network element (N4) terminating the tandem connection generates an alarm report including the failed link as indicated by the failed link identifier.

  • Patent number: 7333435
Abstract: A novel apparatus, system and method for transmitting data flows having different quality of service (QoS) attributes over a network link structured in two or more channels is provided. The method classifies arriving packets to determine their required/assigned QoS attributes and places the classified packets into one of several logical channel queues, the selected logical channel queue having an appropriate corresponding set of QoS attributes defined. A radio link controller examines the available channels and, for each channel, selects a logical channel queue whose contents will be transmitted thereon. The radio link controller determines the data transmission capacity for each channel and segments the contents of the selected logical channel to fit within the determined capacity. The selection of the logical channel queue is performed in accordance with the set of QoS attributes and thus each flow can have different QoS characteristics including priorities, reliabilities (ARQ, no ARQ, etc.).

  • Patent number: 7333436
Abstract: A network device with bandwidth usage control functions using a leaky bucket algorithm to provide a traffic service conforming to given user parameters. A leaky bucket counter produces a new leaky-bucket (LB) count at predetermined cell slot intervals by adding an output rate parameter to the previous count, and then by subtracting therefrom a full rate parameter if a cell output request signal is active. An upper limit calculator determines an upper limit for such LB count values, and a count modifier applies this upper limit, thereby producing a modified LB count. When the modified LB count from the count modifier equals or exceeds an output reference value, a comparator activates an output timing signal, which permits transmission of a pending cell in a buffer.

  • Patent number: 7333438
Abstract: A recovery method for use in a connection-oriented network having nodes interconnected by links for establishing connections within the network, the method described enables the recovery of connections in the network in the event of a failure. The recovery method includes the following steps: (a) assigning connection re-routing priority to the connections in the network based on configured polices in response to the failure; and (b) creating release message bundles based on the assigned connection re-routing priority for use by the nodes in the network to recover connections. More specifically, a failure (e.g., link failure) could affect hundreds or thousands of connections passing through a node. To recover these connections, the node determines which connections should be recovered first and which connections can wait (or may never be recovered). The recovery method determines the priorities of re-routing connections after failure.

  • Patent number: 7333441
Abstract: It is disclosed a method to control the traffic generated by packet switched services in digital cellular communication networks. The method, enabled by the operator or by radio resource manager request, exploits network controlled cell reselection procedure and is based on the evaluation of the level of occupation of radio resources and, for every GPRS mobile, on the evaluation of the signal strength received both from the serving cell and from the cells adjacent to the serving one. Suitable cells towards which to move the GPRS mobiles are searched by the procedure. GPRS mobiles are then moved towards a candidate target cell through network controlled cell reselection if the cell supports packet switched service and has an occupation level of radio resources lower than a threshold parameter set by the operator on a cell basis.

  • Patent number: 7333459
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for allocating an address of a data service offering server to a communication device such as a mobile services device or a SIM card. With the allocation, the server address is selected from a number of address identifiers. Each address identifier identifies a valid server independently of the current server configuration of the communication network. The server address can be combined out of a fixed and a variable portion. Moreover, the address identifiers can be updated, for example, by means of a so-called DNS server. The described server address allocation method improves the scalability of the communication system and offers an efficient measure for load distribution for both the data service offering application servers and for so-called DNS servers. Moreover, the invention relates to a corresponding communication device for allocating a server address, and to a corresponding communication system and computer program.

Abstract: A mobile router is configured for generating a local router prefix (i.e., a null or invalid address prefix that is not reachable via a wide area network) for use by mobile nodes that attempt to attach to the mobile router. The mobile router attaches to an attachment router using a care-of address with an attachment router address prefix, and outputs a router advertisement message that specifies the null address prefix. Upon receiving a message from a mobile host that includes a source address field specifying a mobile host care-of address that includes the null address prefix, the mobile router adds the mobile host care-of address to a reverse routing header and inserts its own care-of address into the source address field. The message is output to its destination with the reverse routing header, ensuring the IPv6 address of the mobile router remains anonymous in the wide area network.

Abstract: A wireless terminal operates within a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and includes a directional antenna, a radio frequency unit operably coupled to the directional antenna, and a processor operably coupled to the radio frequency unit. The processor controls the operation of the wireless terminal to operate within the WLAN to assist in WLAN service management. In its operations, the wireless terminal listens to a plurality of beacons transmitted by a corresponding plurality of Wireless Access Points (WAPs) of the WLAN. The wireless terminal then characterizes the plurality of beacons with regard to signal quality. Based upon the characterization, the wireless terminal selects a desired WAP of the plurality of WAPs. The wireless terminal then associates with the desired WAP of the plurality of WAPs. Finally, the wireless terminal adjusts a gain vector of a servicing antenna of the wireless terminal so that it is substantially directed toward the desired WAP of the plurality of WAPs.

Abstract: A method for allocating a safety channel to a handover subscriber station (SS) for data communication in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) communication system. In the method, a base station (BS) determines a bin offset indicating a safety channel to be allocated to the handover SS and the number of subchannels every frame, generates a MAP information element (IE) with a set indicator indicating allocation of the safety channel, the MAP IE including SS identifier information indicating the handover SS, information on the determined bin offset and information on the determined number of subchannels, and transmits the generated MAP IE at a MAP IE transmission time in the frame. The handover SS receives the MAP IE from the BS every frame, and transmits/receives data for a predetermined number of frames in the allocated safety channel according to the MAP IE.

  • Patent number: 7333464
Abstract: The present technique for automating service discovery and the set-up of a wireless network improves a user's experience when setting-up the wireless network and using one or more services. The technique includes automatic neighbor/service discovery using special beacons transmitted from wireless devices. Each special beacon identifies the wireless device (i.e., host) that transmitted the beacon along with the services provided by the device. For each special beacon that is received, a corresponding host name and the service provided by it are displayed in a graphical user interface. A user may select one or more of the host names and initiate a transmission of a network set-up and service request. The network set-up and service request identifies the selected host names and invites each selected host name to become a member of a wireless network. After the network has been set up, the service may be invoked automatically.

Abstract: To execute the cell-search procedure in a cellular communication system (such as a system based upon the 3GPP TDD standard), there are available identification codes for the second step (slot synchronization) and for the third step (identification of the scrambling codes). The identification codes are identified by a process of correlation with the received signal and are used for obtaining from a correspondence table the parameters for the execution of the second step (CD) or of the third step (SCR). The correspondence table is stored in a reduced form by the identification, according to rules of symmetry and redundancy, of subtables designed to generate the entire table by appropriate combination operations. The search procedure in the correspondence table thus reduced is conveniently modified by the introduction of the combination operations. A preferential application is in mobile communication systems based upon standards such as UMTS, CDMA2000, IS95 or WBCDMA.
