Publication number: 20080112079Abstract: A patterned perpendicular magnetic recording medium of the type that has spaced-apart pillars with magnetic material on their ends and with nonmagnetic trenches between the pillars is made with a method that allows use of a pre-etched substrate. The substrate has a generally planar surface at the trenches and comprises material that when heated will diffuse into the magnetic recording layer material and chemically react with one or more of the elements typically used in the recording layer. The pillars are formed of material that will not diffuse into the recording layer. After the recording layer is formed over the entire substrate so as to cover both the pillar ends and the trenches, the substrate is annealed. This results in the destruction or at least substantial reduction of any ferromagnetism in the recording layer material in the trenches so that the trenches are nonmagnetic.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 10, 2006Publication date: May 15, 2008Applicant: HITACHI GLOBAL STORAGE TECHNOLOGIES NETHERLANDS B.V.Inventors: Eric Edward Fullerton, Olav Hellwig, Jeffrey S. Publication number: 20080112081Abstract: The present invention provides a perpendicular magnetic write head capable of preventing unintended erasure of information due to spread of a magnetic field for writing. A leading shield, two side shields, and a trailing shield are disposed around (a front end portion of) a main magnetic pole layer. A nonmagnetic layer having a uniform thickness formed by ALD is provided between the front end portion and two side shields. Consequently, intervals are constant in any positions. Spread of magnetic fields for recording in a write track width direction is suppressed sufficiently more than the case where the intervals vary among positions.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 8, 2007Publication date: May 15, 2008Applicant: SAE MAGNETICS (H.K.) Publication number: 20080112090Abstract: A lead overlay design of a magnetic sensor is described with sensor and free layer dimensions such that the free layer is stabilized by the large demagnetization field due to the shape anisotropy. In one embodiment the giant magnetoresistive (GMR) effect under the leads is destroyed by removing the antiferromagnetic (AFM) and pinned layers above the free layer. The overlaid lead pads are deposited on the exposed spacer layer at the sides of the mask that defines the active region. In other embodiment a layer of electrically insulating material is deposited over the sensor to encapsulate it and thereby insulate it from contact with the hardbias structures. Various embodiments with self-aligned leads are also described. In a variation of the encapsulation embodiment, the insulating material is also deposited under the lead pads so the electrical current is channeled through the active region of the sensor and sidewall deposited lead pads.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 9, 2006Publication date: May 15, 2008Inventors: James Mac Freitag, David Eugene Heim, Kuok San Ho, Wipul Pemsiri Jayasekara, Kim Y. MAGNETO-RESISTIVE EFFECT DEVICE, THIN-FILM MAGNETIC HEAD, HEAD GIMBAL ASSEMBLY, AND HARD DISK SYSTEM
Publication number: 20080112096Abstract: The thickness of the semiconductor layer forming a part of the spacer layer is set in the thickness range for a transitional area showing conduction performance halfway between ohmic conduction and semi-conductive conduction in relation to the junction of the semiconductor layer with the first nonmagnetic metal layer and the second nonmagnetic metal layer. This permits the specific resistance of the spacer layer to be greater than that of an ohomic conduction area, so that spin scattering and diffusion depending on a magnetized state increases, resulting in an increase in the MR ratio. The CPP-GMR device can also have a suitable area resistivity (AR) value. If the device can have a suitable area resistivity and a high MR ratio, it is then possible to obtain more stable output power in low current operation than ever before, and extend the service life of the device as well. The device is also lower in resistance than a TMR device, so that significant noise reductions are achievable.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 5, 2007Publication date: May 15, 2008Applicant: TDK CORPORATIONInventors: Tomohito Mizuno, Yoshihiro Tsuchiya, Kei Hirata -
Publication number: 20080112097Abstract: An arc suppression circuit in a protection relay having trip contacts is used to turn off a battery-powered solenoid and trip an AC power circuit breaker. The arc suppression circuit uses a switch-control circuit to control the turning off of a semi-conductor switch so that the semi-conductor switch provides a current path around the trip contacts, and is carrying all, or substantially all, of the load current, before the trip contacts are opened. When the trip contacts begin to open, the switch-control circuit holds the semi-conductor switch on for a sufficient time to prevent an arc from becoming established before turning the semi-conductor switch off. In a second embodiment, the arc suppression circuit provides a second switch-control circuit. This second switch-control circuit is configured to accept control signals from a microprocessor within a protection relay.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 10, 2006Publication date: May 15, 2008Inventors: Mohamed Maharsi, Douglas A. Publication number: 20080112123Abstract: The invention provides a housing for an electrical card, which is an RSMMC memory card. The housing includes a metal cover and a frame integrally formed at a periphery of the metal cover by way of injection molding. A long frame is formed with a long slot for accommodating a control chip. The long slot has a length ranging from 7 to 9 mm to accommodate various types of control chips. The structure intensity of the long slot can be increased by forming through hole slots to be pressed by push needles at the bottom of the long slot when the frame is injected to cover a metal sheet. Then, the substrate formed with the IC is closed and fixed from the other surface. Thus, it is possible to effectively increase the structure intensity of the long slot to improve the function thereof.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 9, 2006Publication date: May 15, 2008Inventors: Chin-Chun Liu, Shih-Tung Liu

Publication number: 20080112125Abstract: A portable hard disk drive includes a housing, a hard drive assembly disposed within the housing, and isolation material coupled to the hard drive assembly. The housing forms an enclosure defined by opposing first and second ends, opposing sides extending between the opposing first and second ends, and a top surface opposite a bottom surface. The hard drive assembly is disposed within the enclosure. The isolation material displaces the hard drive assembly from the opposing first and second ends by an end sway space and displaces the hard drive assembly from each of the opposing sides by a side sway space. In this regard, the end sway space is greater than the side sway space.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 9, 2006Publication date: May 15, 2008Inventors: Robert C. Martin, Peter A. Ridl, Leo W. Publication number: 20080112127Abstract: An improved cooling system for a computer is disclosed. In one embodiment, the improved cooling system includes an angled blower housing and a frusto-conical, centrifugal impeller. The computer chassis has a chassis air inlet and a chassis air outlet. A blower housing is disposed in the computer chassis. The blower housing has a blower inlet face spaced within 0.512 inches (1.3 cm) from a wall of the computer chassis and facing the wall. A blower air inlet is disposed on the blower inlet face and a blower air outlet is in communication with the chassis air outlet. A centrifugal impeller is rotatably supported in the blower housing about an axis of rotation to move air from the blower air inlet to the blower air outlet. The centrifugal impeller defines a generally frusto-conical profile when rotated about the axis of rotation.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 9, 2006Publication date: May 15, 2008Inventors: Michael Sean June, Billy Warren Mediin, Mark Edward Steinke
