  • Patent number: 7411954
Abstract: Packet routing via payload inspection at routers in a core of a distributed network. Packets include subjects and attributes in addition to routing information. The subjects correspond with particular types of content for subscriptions, and the attributes encapsulate the data or content. The routers store filters corresponding with subscriptions to content. The subscriptions can include wildcards, which are converted to filters using routing rules that constrain sizes of fields for the subscription. Upon receiving a packet, a router inspects the payload section of the packet containing the attributes in order to retrieve the attributes and apply them to the filters for the subscriptions. If an attribute satisfies a filter, the packet is routed to the next link. If the attributes do not satisfy the filters, the router discards the packet. These routing decisions are distributed among routers in the network core.

  • Patent number: 7411955
Abstract: A 3-layer Virtual Private Network (VPN) is disclosed and includes P devices and PE devices in the backbone network, a plurality of sites and CE devices in subscribers' VPNs, and Hierarchy of PE (HoPE) devices, the HoPE devices serve as edge routers in the backbone network and are connected to P devices in the backbone network as well as sites and CE devices in subscribers' VPNs; the HoPE devices include understratum PEs (UPEs), zero or more middle-level PEs (MPEs) and superior PEs (SPEs) connected with each other, and all of the PEs (UPEs, MPEs, and SPEs) take different roles and deliver the function of a central PE. For the SPEs, the routing and forwarding performance should be relatively higher; while for UPEs, the performance may be lower. The architecture can enhance the expandability in hierarchical BGP/MPLS VPNs.

  • Patent number: 7411957
Abstract: A system and method is provided for automatically identifying and removing malicious data packets, such as denial-of-service (DoS) packets, in an intermediate network node before the packets can be forwarded to a central processing unit (CPU) in the node. The CPU's processing bandwidth is therefore not consumed identifying and removing the malicious packets from the system memory. As such, processing of the malicious packets is essentially “off-loaded” from the CPU, thereby enabling the CPU to process non-malicious packets in a more efficient manner. Unlike prior implementations, the invention identifies malicious packets having complex encapsulations that can not be identified using traditional techniques, such as ternary content addressable memories (TCAM) or lookup tables.

  • Patent number: 7411958
Abstract: A method and system for performing a copy operation between storage devices coupled to a Fiber Channel switch element is provided. The Fiber Channel switch element receives a user command to copy data from a source storage device to a destination storage device and controls the copying operation. The Fiber Channel switch acts as a SCSI initiator and initiates a write operation for the destination storage device and initiates a read operation for the source storage device; and uses an alias cache for intercepting messages between the destination and source storage devices. A RX_ID mapping cache is used to substitute a RX_ID so that that a Fiber Channel write target appears to the source storage device as the destination storage device, and to the destination storage device a Fiber Channel read target appears to be the source storage device.

  • Patent number: 7411960
Abstract: A method and apparatus retrieves and stores configuration information for network endpoint devices from other devices in the network, such as a switch adjacent to the endpoint device. When the endpoint device establishes a connection with the network, it generates a sequence of SNMP getnext commands using the ILMI interface to obtain the configuration information from the network device. If the network device sends a trap to the endpoint device indicating a change has been made to the configuration parameters stored in the network device for a PVC, a series of SNMP getrequest commands are made using the ILMI interface to retrieve the configuration information for that PVC from the network device. If the endpoint device detects an interruption in communication with the network device, the endpoint device discards the information retrieved previously.

  • Patent number: 7411963
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the dissemination of non-routing information to nodes of a network is provided. A new type of IS-IS packet (called a NRI IS-IS packet) is described that exclusively carries non-routing information. When the NRI IS-IS packet is received by a router, the router may send the NRI IS-IS packet to an appropriate component responsible for processing non-routing information, without analyzing, verifying, and validating the information carried in each TLV and sub-TLV of the NRI IS-IS packet. Advantageously, the time it takes for routers of the network to achieve convergence is decreased since a IS-IS packet reader need not analyze, verify, and validate information not related to network topology and IP routing. Therefore, when NRI IS-IS packets are received, there is no impact in the convergence time of nodes in the network.

  • Patent number: 7411964
Abstract: To prevent load of route calculation from being centralized in part of units. A node calculates routes of a primary path and an alternate path and sends them to a management center. The management center checks whether SRLGs of the two routes overlap, and instructs the node to perform calculation again if the routes overlap. The management center searches for an alternate path having a route overlapping the route of the above described alternate path. When an overlapping alternate path exists, and SRLGs of a primary path corresponding to the alternate path and the above described primary path do not overlap, a link is shared in an overlapping portion of the routes of the two alternate paths.

  • Patent number: 7411967
Abstract: Gateways providing connectivity for respective private IPv4 networks to an IPv6 network establish communications between IPv4 nodes in the private network. Network address translation-protocol translation (NAT-PT) state entries are created by gateway pairs enabling translation of IPv4 packets between first and second IPv4 nodes in respective first and second IPv4 private networks into IPv6 packets for transmission via the IPv6 network. Each NAT-PT state entry specifies the IPv6 addresses for the first and second IPv4 nodes, and the IPv4 addresses used to identify the first and second IPv4 nodes in the corresponding private IPv4 network. Each gateway is configured for generating the IPv6 address for each local IPv4 node based on prepending its corresponding assigned private IPv4 address with a corresponding prescribed IPv6 prefix assigned to the gateway.

  • Patent number: 7411971
Abstract: A classification mechanism automatically aligns time-sensitive data streams to sequences (schedules), according to information in the packets or other information and classification criteria specified by a human network administrator, a sequence agent, an application program or otherwise. When a packet arrives at a first sequence-aware switch along a path, the packet is aligned to a new or existing sequence. When a new sequence is established, appointments are reserved at sequence-aware switches along the path. The packet is placed in a queue, based on its classification. When the packet reaches the head of the queue, at that queue's appointment time, the switch forwards the packet along the path. If possible, appointments have been reserved at subsequent switches along the packet's path, so the packet can be forwarded through the subsequent switches without delay. Packets that do not match any classification criteria are handled on a best-effort basis.

  • Patent number: 7411972
Abstract: In a communication system comprising a link layer device connectable to one or more physical layer devices, at least a given one of a plurality of ports of the one or more physical layer devices is designated as a port for which status information is to be requested by the link layer device on a more frequent basis than such information is to be requested for one or more other ports of the plurality of ports. The ports are then polled by the link layer device in accordance with a non-linear polling sequence such that the at least one designated port is polled more frequently than the one or more other ports. The designated port may comprise a port to which the link layer device transmits data in conjunction with a current data transfer. The non-linear polling sequence may thus be altered dynamically based on particular data transfers that are occurring between a link layer device and a physical layer device in a communication system.

Abstract: Reverse Link (RL) data rate allocation in a High Data Rate (such as 1xEV-DO) system as a function of Forward Link (FL) channel quality. Rate shaping of a throughput profile for multiple Access Terminals (ATs) is performed by adjusting transition probabilities associated with a data rate allocation algorithm. The RL maximum data rate per AT is adjusted to reduce the loading in a designated area and result in rate shaping of the cell and/or sector. In one embodiment, the maximum data rates are adjusted as a function of the FL Signal to Interference and Noise Ratio (SINR), such as measured per serving sector or as a captured sum total of FL SINR. In still another embodiment, the maximum data rates are adjusted as a function of differences in rise-over-thermal values between neighboring sectors.

Abstract: A solution for matching RADIUS request packets with corresponding RADIUS response packets when the number of simultaneous outstanding requests is greater than 256 involves using a sixteen-octet authenticator field in each packet. For each response packet that arrives, the identifier of the packet is compared in turn with the identifier of each outstanding request packet. If the identifiers match, the authenticators are then compared. If the results of the comparison indicate a match, the packet is accepted and no further processing of the outstanding requests is required. Otherwise, a search of the outstanding request packets is continued. This solution allows for more than 256 simultaneous outstanding RADIUS requests and only encounters a mismatch or ambiguous match with a probability of one in 3.4×1038 packets.

  • Patent number: 7411984
Abstract: Telephone tones such as dialing tones and busy or engaged tones differ in different countries and in traditional telephone networks it has been possible to deal with this because national telephone networks have been used. However, with the advent of next generation communications networks in which telephone services are transmitted over a packet network, a need has arisen to manage telephone tones in a more sophisticated manner. To address this, a tone service provides telephone tone information to tone recipients such as media gateways, session initiation protocol (SIP) phones and virtual media gateways. In the event that a new tone recipient is added to the packet network, the tone service is able to automatically provide appropriate telephone tone information to that new tone recipient. Similarly, if telephone tones need to be upgraded or rolled back, the tone service is able to automatically provide appropriate telephone tone information to each of the tone recipients.

  • Patent number: 7411999
Abstract: Measurements for an eye diagram of signal of interest are placed in a data structure that is examined to locate an eye opening of interest. The eye opening of interest is normalized into figure of merit units related to the operational voltage and timing requirements of the data receiver for that signal. The locations within the normalized eye opening may be taken as center locations for trial symmetric shapes that start out small and are enlarged until they first include locations not part of the normalized eye opening. The center of a largest such shape is mapped back into the units of the original eye diagram as optimum sampling parameters for data analysis equipment that uses the receiver to sample the signal once per unit interval to discover logical value. An alternative is to repeatedly remove the ‘outer layer’ of the normalized eye opening until only one location remains.
