Abstract: An evaporative cooling apparatus includes a liquid reservoir and a pump coupled to the liquid reservoir. The pump includes a pressure output that applies a static pressure against the liquid stored in the liquid reservoir. The applied pressure forces liquid through a liquid supply line to a nozzle unit, and the liquid is ejected into a stream of forced air from a fan for evaporative cooling applications. The pressure output is also in fluid communication with the nozzle unit via a gas supply line extending between the pressure output and the nozzle unit for delivering gas into the nozzle unit. The gas delivered to the nozzle unit interacts with the liquid inside the nozzle unit to generate the atomized spray of liquid droplets.

Abstract: A glass manufacturing apparatus includes a control device configured to modify a predetermined diameter of at least one of a first downstream pair of draw rolls in a first downstream equation based on a monitored actual velocity of a first edge portion of a glass ribbon such that a predetermined ribbon velocity of the first edge portion of the glass ribbon in the first downstream equation changes to substantially match the monitored actual velocity without substantially changing a first downstream angular velocity of the at least one of the first downstream pair of draw rolls. In further examples, methods of manufacturing a glass ribbon include the step modifying the predetermined diameter of at least one of a first downstream pair of draw rolls in the first downstream equation based on the monitored actual velocity of the first edge portion of the glass ribbon.

Abstract: This disclosure is directed to a continuous flow ion-exchange system and process (CIOX) in which a fresh molten salt, for example KNO3, is supplied a salt inlet end of a long channeled containment vessel and the used molten salt is removed from a salt outlet end distal from the inlet end of the channel. Glass article is loaded into at least one cassette, the cassette is placed in the vessel containing the molten salt and is translated from the salt outlet end to the salt inlet end. Cassettes containing glass articles are continuously placed into the vessel at the salt outlet lend and are removed as they reach the salt inlet end.

Abstract: A crucible is filled with silicon material and is arranged in a process chamber. The silicon material in the crucible is melted and is subsequently cooled below the solidification temperature. During a time period, a plate element that has at least one passage may be arranged over the molten silicon in the crucible, and a gas flow may be directed onto the surface of the molten silicon at least partially via the at least one passage. Alternatively a crucible arrangement includes a crucible and a holding ring arranged on or above a crucible filled with silicon material. Additional silicon material may be received and held above the crucible by the holding ring. During the heating of the silicon material in the crucible and the holding ring, molten silicon is formed in a crucible, which is subsequently cooled below the solidification temperature of the silicon.

Abstract: An optical microresonator is configured as an optical microbubble formed along a section of an optical microcapillary. The curvature of the outer surface of the microbubble creates an optical resonator with a geometry that encourages the circulating WGMs to remain confined in the central region of the bubble, creating a high Q optical resonator. The resonator may be tuned by modifying the physical properties of the microbubble, allowing the resonator to be used as an optical filter. The resonator may also be used as a sensor or laser by introducing the material to be sensed (or the active laser material) into the microcapillary along which the microbubble is formed.
