    Abstract: A high velocity munition comprises a projectile, mounted on a cartridge case, that can be fired from an automatic cannon or weapon. During storage or transport an IM venting device included in the cartridge case prevents the propellant charge from firing the projectile, leaving the cartridge damaged, but intact upon premature ignition. The IM vent exhaust channel is filled with a solid fusible material that melts at a lower temperature than the ignition temperatures of the igniter (or primer) and the propellant charge of the projectile. At least one non-fusible, ruptureable member is included in the IM vent channel and positioned to provide structural integrity to the fusible material in the channel. Alternatively or in addition to the fusible material, a shape memory alloy ring surrounds the igniter (or primer) and separates from the cartridge when the cartridge reaches a temperature that causes auto-ignition.

The primer includes a small charge of a mixture in contact with the high explosive such that when the primer is struck by the firing pin of the firearm, the primer causes the high explosive to detonate disabling the firearm.

When propellant in the high pressure chamber (150) is burned efficiently, high pressure gases developing inside the high pressure chamber cause the pressure disc (170) to rupture at a predetermined pressure along the grooves (172) so that the gases propel the projectile (110) out of a barrel at a higher speed of about 100 m/s or more.

In embodiments, the propellant driving the projectile does not provide enough gas pressure to recycle the weapon and the telescoping cartridge supplements the needed power for recycling sufficient to accomplish the recycling. The invention include the telescoping cartridge providing a projectile with lethal energy and recycle capability for gas operated rifles. The subsonic cartridge may have at least 80 ft lbs of energy and operates subsonically.

The cartridge body has a rearward end in locking engagement with a forward end of the cartridge case, a channel located in the cartridge body contains an extrudable explosive, a piston in slidable engagement in the channel is in a forward end of said channel, the piston being forward of the extrudable explosive contained in the channel, whereby rearward movement of the piston forces extrudable explosive rearwardly and radially outwardly through extrusion ports into a cavity inside of the cartridge body where a bladder is stowed. The piston has a rearwardly projecting detonator pin which upon movement to a rearward most position engages a rearward escapement and detonator which in turn initiates detonation of explosive in the bladder. A fuse is attached to a forward end of the cartridge body. A proximity fuse or contact fuse may be used.

Further, the polymeric casings may include any desired colorants to distinguish different calibers of ammunition by color, and the spent casings may be recyclable.

By timing the ignition of the charges a higher average pressure is sustained in the gun tube without risking a breach blow. After the peak pressure of the first propellant charge is reached the second propellant is ignited. The energy of the second propellant causes the pressure in the gun tube to fall more gradually.
