  • Patent number: 6019871
Abstract: The foam process is used to make non-woven webs from cellulose or synthetic fibers, which webs have as a component super absorbent polymer (SAP). In order to minimize water absorbency by the SAP, it may have a protective coating that dissolves only after in contact with water a few seconds; the SAP may be frozen (e.g. to about -18.degree. C.); and/or the SAP may be transported by highly chilled (e.g. about 1.degree. C.) water. The SAP, and liquid or foam carrier, is fed as a small volume flow into a conduit carrying a high volume flow of a fiber containing foam slurry, just before a foraminous element. A mechanical mixer may be provided in the conduit for mixing the SAP with the fiber-foam slurry. The addition of the SAP to the carrier fluid takes place no more than ten seconds (preferably no more than five seconds) before the fiber-foam slurry mixed with SAP is brought into operative association with one or more foraminous elements.

  • Patent number: 5993604
Abstract: The present pertains to an improved method of internally sizing a cellulosic article and an improved internally sized cellulosic article where a water-dispersible, water- and alkali-insoluble internal sizing agent from an interpolymer of an ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon monomer and an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid comonomer is applied to fiber stock or pulp slurry some amount of time subsequent to the instance of application of a retention aid. The invention also includes a novel internal sizing composition where the interpolymer is rendered water-dispersible by reaction with an inorganic neutralizing cationic compound. The improved method is particularly well suited for paper making wherein substantially improved sizing performance is obtainable. Internal sizing agents based on inorganic neutralizing cationic compounds such as, for example, potassium hydroxide, provide the surprising advantage of hard water resistance.

Abstract: A saturated paper suitable for use in a clean room environment, which paper includes a fibrous web in which at least about 50 percent of the fibers comprising the web, on a dry weight basis, are cellulosic fibers. The paper also includes a saturant which is present in the saturated paper at a level of from about 10 to about 100 percent, based on the dry weight of the fibrous web. The saturant, in turn, includes from about 98 to about 70 percent, on a dry weight basis, of a latex reinforcing polymer having a glass transition temperature of from about -40.degree. C. to about 25.degree. C.; and from about 2 to about 30 percent, on a dry weight basis, of a cationic polymer. The saturant is adapted to render the saturated paper durable, low linting, and ink jet printable.

  • Patent number: 5891305
Abstract: The invention relates to a new process for the manufacture of paper which employs, in the fibrous composition, a cationic starch exhibiting a high level of fixed nitrogen, namely greater than 0.95%, and a polyaluminum compound, such as a (basic) aluminum polychloride or an aluminum polychlorosulphate. This process makes it possible, including under difficult conditions (fibrous composition based on old papers, significant closure of the circuits), to improve the level of retention of starch and the physical characteristics of the paper, indeed to increase the machine speed by dispensing with the surface treatment optionally applied to the paper. The process according to the invention is particularly suitable for the manufacture of paper for graphical use or of paper for wrapping or packaging and very particularly of fluting paper or of liner paper for corrugated fiberboard.

  • Patent number: 5849155
Abstract: The invention describes a method for dispersion of cellulose based fibers in water. The raw material, which particularly may be recycled paper, is first wetted with water. By a combination of addition of hydrocolloid which binds water, and strong kneading at high solid content, the mixture is transformed into a modulable paste. The high viscosity of the paste effectively conveys the shear forces of the kneading machine to make the fibers flexible and tear them apart. When the kneading is terminated, the hydrocolloid prevents the fibers from reassociation into fiber bundles.
