Abstract: A blood treatment filter which comprises a housing including an inlet and an outlet, and a filter unit for filtering blood containing erythrocytes, platelets and leukocytes as blood cell components is provided. The filter unit comprises a main filter unit which virtually removes predetermined cell components from blood and passes the remaining blood cell components, and a pre-filter unit which is arranged at the up-stream side of the main filter and virtually does not remove blood cell components. The pre-filter unit has a permeability rate of 70 to 90% for micro particles having an average particle size of 6 ?m which are contained in a suspension and passed by gravity.

  • Publication number: 20090134092
Abstract: An element for use in ultrafiltration or microfiltration of potable water has a large number of small diameter hollow fibre membranes attached between two headers. Side plates attached to the sides of the headers define vertical flow channels containing the membranes. The elements may be placed side by side and stacked on top of each other to form cassettes having continuous vertical flow channels through the entire cassette. The membrane modules or cassettes may be arranged to cover a substantial part of the cross sectional area of an open tank. Tank water may flow upwards or downwards through the flow channels. A tank may be deconcentrated by at least partially emptying and refilling the tank with fresh water while permeation continues. Excess tank water created during deconcentration may flow generally upwards through the modules and out through a retentate outlet or overflow at the top of the tank.

  • Publication number: 20090101559
Abstract: The present invention includes a microfluidic filter and concentrator that can separate a filtrate from a fluid containing components, e.g. a suspension of particles, to be removed from the fluid at least to some extent. The filter may employ principals of tangential flow filtration, also known as cross-flow filtration. In one aspect, a microfluidic filter described herein includes at least a first, main channel and one or more secondary, filtering channels that connect to the main channel. Filtration occurs when a fluid portion of a sample that is flowed through the main channel enters one or more of the filtering channels and at least some of the components in the sample do not enter or do not flow through the secondary, filtering channels. The secondary channels may be dimensioned to inhibit flow of components through them, and/or a porous material such as a layer may be positioned to inhibit flow of components through the secondary channels.
