Abstract: An improved dry heat method and apparatus for thawing frozen biological fluids utilizing electrically heated plates and oscillatory motion to enhance heat transfer by mixing as the fluid thaws. Bags of frozen fluid to be thawed are lightly squeezed between two heating plates, one of which is gently oscillated to facilitate mixing of the thawing fluid, increasing heat transfer and reducing time required for thawing. Direct contact of the heating plates against the bag surfaces increases heat transfer by eliminating insulative effects of another bag wall and a water boundary layer, compared to water bath units. Flat (or curved to conform to bag) heat pipes are preferred as heating plates compared to plain aluminum sheet. Flat heat pipes have the property of an isothermal heating surface, thus maximizing heat transfer to the coldest areas, preventing hot spots, and simplifying heating plate temperature control.
Abstract: The microreactor is completely integrated and is formed by a semiconductor body having a surface and housing at least one buried channel accessible from the surface of the semiconductor body through two trenches. A heating element extends above the surface over the channel and a resist region extends above the heating element and defines an inlet reservoir and an outlet reservoir. The reservoirs are connected to the trenches and have, in cross-section, a larger area than the trenches. The outlet reservoir has a larger area than the inlet reservoir. A sensing electrode extends above the surface and inside the outlet reservoir.
Abstract: A heat generator includes a cubic heat generating member for outputting heat flow. The heat generating member includes a heat flow output face and five heat flow insulation faces. Five thermoelectric coolers are attached on the five heat flow insulation faces respectively. A heat flow compensating circuit is electrically connected between each heat flaw insulation face and a corresponding thermoelectric cooler. The circuit is capable of controlling heat generated by the thermoelectric cooler to cause the temperature of the heating face of the thermoelectric cooler to be equal to the temperature of the heat flow insulation face. Controlling the heating in this manner results in the output of heat energy from the heat flow output face of the heat generating member being substantially equal to the heat energy generated by the heat generating member.

The circuit is capable of controlling heat generated by a thermoelectric resistor of the temperature compensating member to cause the temperature of the temperature compensating face to be equal to the temperature of the heat insulation face, which results in the heat energy of the heat flow exporting out from the heat export face of the heat generating member to be substantially equal to the heat energy of the heat generated by the heat generating member.
Abstract: A heat generator includes a heat generating member and a temperature compensating member made from different material. The heat generating member includes a heat flow output face for outputing heat flow and five heat flow insulation faces. The temperature compensating member encloses and contacts the heat generating member except the heat flow output face. A heat flow compensating circuit is electrically connected between the temperature compensating member and the heat generating member for maintaining a state of no heat flow flowing between the heat generating member and the temperature compensating member, whereby the heat energy of the heat flow outputing from the heat flow output face is equal to the heat energy of heat generated by the heat generating member.

Abstract: Systems and methods for thermally modifying an ice-to-object interface. One system includes a power supply configured to generate a magnitude of power. The magnitude of the power is sufficient to melt an interfacial layer of ice at the interface; typically the interfacial layer has a thickness in a range one micron to one millimeter. A controller may be used to limit the duration in which power supply generates the magnitude of the power, to limit unneeded heat energy dissipation into the environment. Modulating the pulsed heating energy to the interface modifies a coefficient of friction between the object and the ice.
Abstract: A control circuit (20) for controlling electrostatic discharge in an electric component includes a heater (28) that is thermally coupled to the component. A sensor (30) is used for sensing a sensed condition. A controller is coupled to the heater and the sensor. The controller (24) heats the component in response to the sensed condition. The sensor (30) may include an electron flux level near the component or a surface potential of the component itself.
Abstract: An apparatus for attracting mosquitoes to an electronic insect killing machine (i.e., bug zapper) is provided. The apparatus includes a converter device that fits over a fluorescent or ultraviolet light bulb of the bug zapper. The converter device controls radiant light and heat emitted by the light bulb to produce a desired level of heat to create a warm mass, or host simulator that simulates a blood host meal for biting insects. Mosquitoes and other biting insects, which have infrared vision, are attracted to the host simulator. When used with a scented lure that lures the mosquitoes and biting insects near the insect killer, the host simulator lures the mosquitoes and other insects to the killing device of the insect killer. The mosquitoes and biting insects are destroyed once lured to the killing device. The converter device also blocks most of the visible light emitted by the light bulb, and therefore does not lure beneficial insects, which are attracted to visible light, into the insect killer.
