Abstract: A power line de-icing apparatus that incorporates both thermal and mechanical means to remove various forms of accumulated ice or wet snow from power lines. The apparatus uses a minimum amount of energy to first de-bond and then break off ice from the power line; using far less power than required to fully melt ice. The apparatus operates autonomously, activating heating and chisel mechanisms, and moving between power line support towers in response to both temperature and ice sensor inputs. This operation is repeated in both directions along the power line as long as icing continues to activate the sensors; removing ice more quickly than it can accumulate and thereby preventing mechanical or electrical damage to the power lines and supporting towers. The apparatus is self contained and powered inductively from the power line. It is installed onto the power line without the need for disconnecting the power line.

Abstract: Pumping apparatus of the invention using thermal transpiration micropumps comprises a plurality of individual thermal transpiration micropumps distributed over a substrate (5) as a plurality of rows (A, B, C, . . . , D) each made up of a plurality of micropumps (1, 6, . . . , 7, 8, 9), thereby building up a plurality of columns (a, b, . . . , c, d). Respective heater elements (4) in each of the thermal transpiration micropumps are controlled by suitably controlling a row control conductor (10A) and a column control conductor (11a). This greatly simplifies multiplexed control of a large number of individual micropumps, thus enabling pumping capacity to be adapted.

Abstract: An oven is described that can more evenly heat the semiconductor wafer, even though the wafer may warp during heating. The oven may provide relatively uniform heating even though the type and location of warping may be unpredictable for any given wafer. The oven may have a heating surface divided into a plurality of heating zones that may each independently provide a given amount of heat to the wafer. The amount of heat provided by each zone may be determined using signals from sensors that sense the warping of the wafer.

Abstract: Targeted heating is employed to essentially only heat a material that is used as a spacer and to bond a first chip of a flip-chip to a second chip thereof and not the rest of the chips. In order to heat only the spacer-bonding material, one or more wires are located within, or adjacent to, the spacer-bonding material, and an electrical current is passed through the one or more wires causing them to heat. At the time of final bonding the heat generated by the one or more wires causes the spacer-bonding material to heat to its final curing temperature.

Abstract: An improved fuel processor for fuel cells is provided whereby the startup time of the processor is less than sixty seconds and can be as low as 30 seconds, if not less. A rapid startup time is achieved by either igniting or allowing a small mixture of air and fuel to react over and warm up the catalyst of an autothermal reformer (ATR). The ATR then produces combustible gases to be subsequently oxidized on and simultaneously warm up water-gas shift zone catalysts. After normal operating temperature has been achieved, the proportion of air included with the fuel is greatly diminished.
