Abstract: An electrically conductive lead is formed using a bonding tool. After bonding the wire to a metal surface and extending a length of the wire beyond the bonding tool, the wire is clamped. Movement of the bonding tool imparts a kink to the wire at a location where the wire is fully separated from any metal element other than the bonding tool. A forming element, e.g., an edge or a blade skirt provided at an exterior surface of the bonding tool can help kink the wire. Tensioning the wire using the bonding tool causes the wire to break and define an end. The lead then extends from the metal surface to the end.

Abstract: A drill head manufacturing method calls for a cutting tip to be CVD coated, brazed to a distal end of a drill head, polished and then PVD coated. The process effectively utilizes features of a CVD coating, which renders a tool service life longer and enables a drill head more suitable for high-speed cutting to be manufactured. A cutting tip having been CVD coated with a hard material is brazed at a brazing temperature to a predetermined portion at a distal end side of a head main body. An outer diameter portion OD of the brazed tip about a rotation axis of the head main body is polished. Then, the cutting tip and the head main body are PVD coated with a hard material at a second temperature lower than the brazing temperature.

Abstract: A method for attaching a porous metal layer to a dense metal substrate, wherein the method is particularly useful in forming orthopedic implants such as femoral knee components, femoral hip components, and/or acetabular cups. The method, in one embodiment thereof, comprises providing a solid metal substrate; providing a porous metal structure; contouring a surface of the porous metal structure; placing the porous structure against the substrate such that the contoured surface of the porous metal structure is disposed against the substrate, thereby forming an assembly; applying heat and pressure to the assembly in conjunction with thermal expansion of the substrate in order to metallurgically bond the porous structure and the substrate; and removing mass from the substrate after the porous structure is bonded to the substrate, thereby finish processing the assembly.

Abstract: A fuel rail for high-pressure direct-injection internal combustion engines has an injector holder and a fastening bracket directly attached to a main body of the fuel rail. Thermal deformation may occur at the time of temporary fitting or brazing when assembling the rail. However, positional accuracy of the injector holder can be assured, which results in having an excellent sealing property. Components of the fuel rail for direct-injection internal combustion engines are made of steel or stainless steel, and the components are joined reciprocally by brazing. The components joined by brazing are finished by cutting work and/or burnishing processing after the brazing step.

Abstract: Contact structures exhibiting resilience or compliance for a variety of electronic components are formed by bonding a free end of a wire to a substrate, configuring the wire into a wire stem having a springable shape, severing the wire stem, and overcoating the wire stem with at least one layer of a material chosen primarily for its structural (resiliency, compliance) characteristics. A variety of techniques for configuring, severing, and overcoating the wire stem are disclosed. In an exemplary embodiment, a free end of a wire stem is bonded to a contact area on a substrate, the wire stem is configured to have a springable shape, the wire stem is severed to be free-standing by an electrical discharge, and the free-standing wire stem is overcoated by plating. A variety of materials for the wire stem (which serves as a falsework) and for the overcoat (which serves as a superstructure over the falsework) are disclosed.

Abstract: At least one section of the screw (11) has a wear-protection layer (13) and at least one other section of the screw preferably has an anti-friction layer (18). In a solid rod (11?), abed (12) for the wear-protection layer (13) is first formed, and in this the wear-protection layer (13) is then applied, and finally the interstices (14) between the screw flights (15) are formed. According to the invention, the wear-protection layer (13), for example composed of tungsten carbide, is applied by build-up welding, and the interstices (14) are formed with lateral separation (16, 16?) with respect to the wear-protection layer (13). For production of the anti-friction layer, the dimension of that/those section(s) of the screw (11) where the anti-friction layer, e.g. composed of molybdenum, is to be applied is reduced below specification, while providing lateral separation (19) with respect to the wear-protection layer. The anti-friction layer is then applied in the under-dimensioned region (17).
