Abstract: Described herein are methods and systems for minimizing folding defects when rolling a paper product. The method comprises rotating a roll in a manner that draws a paper product toward the roll. The location of a pick-up point between the roll and the paper product is altered by influencing the air pressure experienced by the paper product. This may be accomplished by flowing air in one of several manners described in the specification.

The slitting function may be carried out under low elongating tensions while yielding highly accurate and repeatable width dimensions in the finished product. The machine incorporates a resiliently coated cylinder with extremely sharp and narrow rotating blades which are commonly adjusted into close contact with the coated cylinder. The blades are driven so that their peripheries slightly over-speed the web as it enters the first contact point of the coated cylinder and the blades as they rotate.

This assembly is mounted so as to move translationally in a horizontal direction perpendicular to the axes of the drum and of the cores, while the sheet product feeding mechanism is fixed. The translational displacement of the movable assembly allows its gradual advance as the diameter of a reel being formed grows and also makes it possible to leave, between this assembly and the sheet product feeding mechanism, a gap available for an operator, for the purpose of introducing the leading edge of the sheet product onto one of the cores.

Abstract: A roll-to-roll paper web feeding system for a laser printer. The paper web is unwound from a roll supported in the unwind machine by a single conveyor belt driven at a speed that varies to match the web feed to the speed of the printer. A pivotably mounted beam houses the belt and can be raised to permit replacement of the roll. A shock absorber acts between the beam and the machine frame to maintain contact between the belt and the paper roll. Replacement of the belt is facilitated by a unique latch acting on the support shaft for a sprocket at the free end of the beam provided for the belt. The paper web is rewound on a roll provided in the rewind machine. Tension must be kept high enough in the paper web to assure a tightly wrapped roll in the rewind machine. This fact requires a friction, or drag roller, to maintain at least one free loop of web, and this drag roller can be replaced quickly as a result of shifting it laterally to decouple the coupling provided at one end of the drag or friction roller.
