  • Patent number: 5116563
Abstract: An improved process for forming a mechanical fastening prong and the prongs produced thereby. The prongs are produced by deposition of a heated, thermally sensitive material onto a substrate, which is transported at a differential velocity relative to the heated material being deposited to form the prongs. Also, the transported substrate may be drawn away from the point of deposition at an angle. By varying the velocity differential between the substrate and the heated, thermally sensitive material as it is deposited and by varying the angle between the substrate and the point of deposition of the heated thermally sensitive material, the fastening characteristics, particularly the shear strength, of the fastening system formed of these prongs may be advantageously modified.

  • Patent number: 5082614
Abstract: The components forming the layers of a composite pipe are successively introduced into a rotary drum (1). Initially, a plastic reinforcing lyaer (8), including a fiber reinforcement, is introduced into the drum, the ends of the drum (1) being bounded by rings. A concrete core layer (16) is then introduced and the length of the core layer (16) is shortened relative to that of the drum (1) by shaping rings fixed to the drum ends. The shaping rings are then replaced by other shaping rings (20, 21) so that, on either side of the core layer (16), two annular spaces (22, 23) are formed which are filled by a socket material (24, 25) of the same composite as the reinforcing layer (8). Thus, at one pipe end a socket end (28) is formed and at the other pipe end a spigot end (30) is formed, each such end being located within the composite pipe wall thickness. After introducing a second reinforcing layer (26), the production of the composite pipe is completed.

Abstract: In a method of making an ornament, a metal ornament body having an internal groove opening at one end to an end edge of the metal ornament body and at an opposite end to front and rear surfaces of the metal ornament body is held between two relatively movable mold members while the one end of the internal groove is connected to a gate of the mold members and the opposite end of the internal groove communicates with mold cavities in the mold members. Then, a melted synthetic resin material is injected into the mold cavities through the gate and the internal groove. The gate mark is not formed on the outside surface of an ornamental member molded of synthetic resin but left on the end edge of the metal ornament body. The gate mark thus formed is normally hidden from view and does not deteriorate the aesthetical appearance of the ornament.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a composite camshaft having a shaft positioned within appropriately aligned and fixtured annular cam and bearing elements, each having interior protrusions that increase in size toward the tube axis. The shaft and elements are supported in a mold and a flowable, hardenable material is injected to fill the space between the tube and the elements for securing the elements to the shaft. The protrusions enhance the grip of the plastic with shrinkage. The shaft and the cam elements have nesting configurations that form a continuous space therebetween such that the hardened material compressionally resists torsional forces between the shaft and cam elements. Injection molding is performed without substantially stressing the freely supported shaft and without applying undue strain to the elements by providing undercut portions in the mold surrounding part of the exterior surface of the elements with high pressure plastic during injection.

  • Patent number: 4806405
Abstract: A link chain or string is produced in an injection molding tool in such a way that a plurality of links threaded onto a string or cable are molded simultaneously, for example in the form of spheres. In order to avoid the transmission of axial forces to the links, which forces might disturb the axial spacings from link to link, the injection molding tool is provided with restrictions which reduce the cross-sectional area of molten material flow channels to a minimum. Preferably, the restricted area is located directly at the respective link. The channels all lead to a common injection molding channel to which the molten material is supplied for thus simultaneously casting or molding of a plurality of links to strings or cables. The restrictions make sure that any forces resulting from shrinkage during the cooling and solidifying cannot shift the balls or links even if the latter are not yet completely solidified internally. Thus, errors in the on-center spacing between adjacent links are avoided.

The fastener or fastener assembly is made by a method comprising placing a string through a female member forming mold and a male member forming mold, supplying a molten thermoplastic resin into the molds to form a female member and a male member, removing the molded female and male members from the molds, moving the string forward, repeating the molding of a plurality of female and male members, and if appropriate, cutting the string between the female member of one fastener and the male member of another.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a sandwich wall panel by molding, formed from an inner bearing wall portion, an outer freely expandable wall and an insulating insert sheet, the wall portions being joined together by means of one of more elongate connecting elements and being held at a distance from each other by means of one or more rigid spacers interposed between the walls. Rigid spacers (11) are positioned at the bottom of a horizontal mold which have two opposite faces (12, 13) parallel to the bottom of the mold, as well as a slanting face (17) joining said opposite faces (12, 13) together and turned outwardly of the mold, each spacer (11) being held away from the bottom of the mold at a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the inner wall portion (15) by means of a support (27), the slanting faces (17) of the spacers (11) being all oriented in the same direction.

The sheeting or film or shaped member, or plurality thereof, and at least one prefinished but not yet hardened molding composition is introduced into a mold and maintained under a processing pressure and temperature for the hardening of the molded components. The preconditioned and still soft molding composition is directly bonded to the sheeting or film or shaped member in that the plastic resin of the molding composition is partially pressed outwardly during the molding operation so as to bond with the sheeting or shaped member, and thereafter cures or hardens.

  • Patent number: 4481160
Abstract: A decorative emblem is formed by insertion of a decorative foil shape into a preformed bezel and encapsulating and bonding the foil to the bezel with a fluent, curable plastic material. After an initial casting of a measured amount of plastic onto the base of the bezel, the foil is inserted and seated. A second cast of plastic forms a cap contiguous with the sides of the bezel and encapsulates the foil and bonds it within the bezel. Upon curing, the plastic cap gives a lens effect to the decorative emblem. The emblem may be equipped with attachment means for fastening it to an automobile, appliance, or other object. In alternative embodiments, a decorative foil shape is placed directly onto the base of the bezel, and a fluent, curable plastic material is cast thereon. As the plastic material cures, it migrates around the edges and under the foil to at least partially encapsulate the foil and bond it within the bezel.

  • Patent number: 4448741
Abstract: In injection-molding a plastic workpiece about a prefabricated permanent insert, a first quantity of plastic material is injected into one or more first-shot cavities through which a portion of the insert extends, thereby forming a corresponding number of annular spacers around that portion. After the spacer or spacers have solidified, the spacer-carrying insert is transferred to a second-shot cavity in which each spacer holds the insert separated from the walls of adjoining cavity sections. A second quantity of plastic material is then injected into the second-shot cavity to complete the workpiece by forming a sheath around the insert incorporating the spacer or spacers which are steadying same against lateral movement due to the pressure of the injected second-shot plastic.
