  • Patent number: 5409340
Abstract: Spine strip stock material, being withdrawn from a supply reel, is cut into pieces of the desired length and the pieces are subsequently fed into positionally accurate contact with cover boards which are moving on a conveying system. High cutting and feeding accuracy are achieved by a servomotor control system which, in response to sensing the motion of the cover boards, stops the infeed of the stock material, clamps and cuts the stationary stock material, feeds the cut spine strip pieces to a waiting position and then moves the pieces from the waiting position into contact with the cover boards.

  • Patent number: 5407233
Abstract: Paper from a roll or other supply is processed by an in-line magazine publishing and/or assembly system. A magazine with a cover made from two sheets of paper is produced. The cover is assembled from two sheets, one of which has a pattern of adhesive material printed on one sheet, the second sheet being placed over the first sheet forming a two sheet cover. One sheet has a pattern of perforations and pattern of slits cut in its surface. The pattern of perforations and pattern of slits and part of the pattern of adhesive material combine to form a tear-out portion in the cover. The tear-out portion may be an envelope or an invoice or an order blank.

  • Patent number: 5383684
Abstract: By providing a foldable portion in association with the cover of a book with the cover and foldable portion incorporating coordinated indicia thereon, a unique book construction is achieved which provides a readily deployable, enlarged, visually stimulating display associated therewith. Preferably, the foldable portion is mounted or cooperatingly associated with the lower or bottom edge of the cover and incorporates an integrally formed fold line therein. In this way, the cover in combination with the foldable portion establishes an elongated, substantially continuous overall configuration which enables the book to be vertically mounted on a supporting surface with the folded portion extending therefrom.

  • Patent number: 5380043
Abstract: A blank book attachment having a mark and sweep leaf with a fold out feature is provided. The leaf is pivotably retained along one edge on a frame, and the frame is pivotably retained at the binding spine of the host blank book. Pulling outward on the leaf causes the leaf to extend out and beyond the pages of the book allowing the pages to turn freely. When the leaf is placed within the host book, with the book open or closed, the leaf can be turned as a page, in which case it also acts as a mark to identify a specific position in the host book. Alternatively, the leaf may be pivoted on the frame to allow the host book pages to be turned past it in either direction.

  • Patent number: 5340155
Abstract: This invention is a binding case for use in an office-type, small-volume, binding operation employing the hot-melt adhesive binding method. The invention is a design and method which cause the excess hot-melt adhesive which expresses laterally from each side of the adhesive strip to be directed in such a way that the excess adhesive does not adhesively bind the book block to the front or rear cover and does not bring about the destruction in appearance or functionality which such undesirable binding would cause. The invention involves a diverting element which forms a channel for the excess adhesive so that the excess adhesive does not bind the book block directly or functionally to the covers.

  • Patent number: 5213370
Abstract: An expandable capacity album or binder for storing and displaying artwork or photographs retains the appearance of a library bound hardcover book at any state of expansion. The front cover and back cover are hinged to a spine which has page retaining channels that allow looseleaf pages to be inserted into or removed from the album. Together, the spine and the channels are adjustable so that the album will expand and contract for different capacities. The outside of the album is covered with leather or cloth to give the album the appearance of a library bound hardcover book. In between the spine and the covering is a resilient material such as plastic foam which can compress or expand so that the covering will always look properly fitted to the spine even when the spine is expanded or contracted to change the capacity of the album. In this way the album maintains its library bound appearance at any state of expansion.

Abstract: A sheet or plate (10) for use for example as a stiffening plate for a book cover comprises an adhesive layer (12) applied to a narrow zone extending along and adjacent to at least one end of the plate or sheet. The adhesive layer (12) is covered by a protective peel-off strip (13) having a free end portion (15). This free end portion is folded along a folding line (16), which defines an acute angle with the longitudinal axis of the protective strip, whereby the free end portion of the protective strip extends beyond said edge of the sheet so as to define an accessible gripping end. The plate or sheet (10) may be arranged and retained in abutting engagement with a second sheet or plate (21), such as a book cover. Now, the protective strip (13) may be removed by pulling the free end portion (15), whereby the sheets or plates may be interconnected.

  • Patent number: 5207456
Abstract: A book according to the present invention has a front cover and a back cover joined by a spine. A plurality of pages are bound to each other and to the cover near the spine. All or nearly all of the pages have a lay flat hinge so that the book will lie flat when opened. The lay flat hinge comprises a weakened portion, a first non-weakened portion between the weakened portion and a head of a page, and a second non-weakened portion between the weakened portion and a foot of the page. The weakened portion allows the book to lie flat when opened and the first and second non-weakened portions prevent pages from being easily torn from the book and prevent the weakened portion from being visible along edges of the book.

  • Patent number: 5203590
Abstract: A book, a book cover, a method for binding the book and an apparatus for forming the book cover are disclosed. The forming apparatus comprises a base portion, an anvil member supported by the base portion and a forming bar, preferably heated, which is operatively associated with the anvil member. In operation, the forming bar engages the anvil member, and the cooperation of the forming bar and the anvil member defines the shape of the spine of a book cover positioned therebetween. Reinforced end sheets are secured to a plurality of pages which are then secured by adhesive means to the formed book cover. The book cover so formed securely holds the pages and secures the spine of the book in a durable construction.

Abstract: A pair of laminates for a dust cover for a hardback book assures that the dust cover is protected from damage while also providing a means for adhesively securing the dust cover to the book. A polyester sheet is adhesively laminated to the outer surface of the dust cover. In like manner, a double backed adhesive sheet is laminated to the undersurface or back side of the dust cover. The double backed tape then provides a means for adhesively securing the dust cover to the front and back hard cover of the book and around the side edges thereof, and in which the ends of the dust cover laminate are adhered to the undersurface of the front and back hard covers of the book.

  • Patent number: 5100181
Abstract: Memorabilia insert sheets are pressed against a support sheet having rows and columns of small area self-stick visual fiducial adhesive zones imprinted thereon. Since the adhesive in the zones is releasable and reusable, misaligned insert sheets may be readily mounted upon the support sheet a number of times by an unskilled user until the insert sheet edges are parallel with respect to the support sheet edges and the surrounding borders are even. A transparent cover sheet is then laminated to the insert sheet by the application of heat and pressure to make a long-lasting, attractive display.

Abstract: A single configuration presentation folder is provided, enabling a user to heat laminate custom printed sheets to the face of the folder without the use of a conventional paper carrier. Portions of the folder are scored to produce folders with one or two pouches holding sales literature or pouchless versions for stand-up displays, or folders containing saddle-stitched data sheets therein or laminated data sheets mounted within a loose leaf or spiral bound cover. Various arrays of fiducials are provided for enabling easy, accurate manual positioning of variable sized insert sheets with respect to the folder edges. The fiducials may be made to disappear upon lamination or are otherwise visually non-obtrusive to the eye. The fiducials may consist of disappearing ink, readily releasable adhesive, grid lines formed in the heat activatable adhesive of the cover sheet, indentations in the folder or inks having low visual contrast.
