  • Patent number: 4985978
Abstract: An improved method and joint structure are provided for assembling a self-clinching fastener to sheet material, particularly thin sheet metal, in which an aperture and a peripheral flange are formed in the sheet metal; thereafter the shank portion of the fastener is inserted into the flange followed by clinching the fastener to the flange to secure the assembly. The sheet metal aperture and peripheral flange can be fabricated in a single work station in which the fabricating tooling punches the sheet metal aperture and extrudes or shapes the peripheral flange between a pair of forming dies. Assembly of the fastener joint with the flanged metal is performed in a second work station in which the fastener shank is inserted into the flange and then the head portion of the fastener is driven into the flange material to begin the clinching step.

  • Patent number: 4964338
Abstract: The marginal portions of a printing plate for rotary printing are joined together to form a cylindrical printing plate, which can be mounted on a printing roller, for example, on a printing roller of extensible diameter. The joint is made by stripping the photosensitive coating of the printing plate at the two marginal portions forming a pocket in one marginal portion and inserting the other marginal portion, bent by about 90.degree., into the pocket. The joint can be made along a circumferential line of the cylinder or along a line which is inclined relative to the circumferential lines of the cylinder. The plate can be mounted with the bent-off and radially inwards-projecting marginal portions, or these marginal portions can be arranged at an inclination to the cylinder radius. The inlet between the two adjacent panels of the pocket is filled with a hardenable material. Thus, a joint is created which forms a continuous, smooth surface for the printing plate in the circumferential direction.

  • Patent number: 4880260
Abstract: A method of joining a pair of pipes is disclosed. The method includes forming one of the pipes with an enlarged diameter near one end thereof. A radially-outwardly flared section widens from the enlarged diameter toward the end of the pipe. An elastic gasket and a C-shaped rigid ring are placed in the flared section. A second pipe is then inserted inside the enlarged section of the first pipe. The outer pipe is then inwardly deformed by the action of a pressure member, such as the die, applied to the exterior of the outer pipe in the region of the pipe overlap. The free end of the outer pipe deforms plastically inwardly toward the inserted pipe thereby compressing the gasket into sealing engagement between the two pipes and compressing the C-shaped ring. As the C-shaped ring is compressed, the outer pipe is deformed into the inserted pipe so that the ring is engaged by the inner wall of the outer pipe and is wedged into the outer wall of the inserted pipe.

  • Patent number: 4716750
Abstract: The invention relates to a process by means of which to obtain hollow members from variegated longitudinal strips, longitudinally assembled. The hollow member obtained may either remain hollow or be provided with a removable core, and can be embodied in precious or semi-precious metals, or their alloys; strips of such materials are utilized to make up the various components of the hollow member's nominal cross section, and the end-product is a new type of multi-colored semi-finished article for use in the manufacture of high-class and costume jewelry, as well as in other fields such as the production of objects of art and/or general interior design.

  • Patent number: 4711010
Abstract: A method of sealing off a vaporization chamber provided in a soleplate of a steam iron by means of a cover is described. The vaporization chamber has an outer wall which has an upper edge remote from the bottom surface of the soleplate and having an upwardly opening continuous recess or groove provided therein. The method comprises placing the cover over the vaporization chamber in contact with the upper edge of the outer wall and applying high pressure to the cover, the cover material being forced into the recess to sealingly connect the cover to the soleplate before the pressure is released. There is no need for any additional sealing materials between the chamber and the cover and no need to screw or rivet the cover onto the soleplate.

Abstract: The device of the invention allows a hair-pin spring with two legs to be inserted astride a plate having windows for locally welding the legs together. This device receives one plate at a time and moves it lengthwise, and a corridor guides each spring in turn, the spring being moved along the corridor towards its insertion position. A mask movable parallel to the plane of the plate from the edge furthest from the zone through which the introduction takes place allows the window to be covered furthest from the zone through which the introduction takes place so as to avoid jamming.

  • Patent number: 4614017
Abstract: A device is described for joining metal sheets with a male and female die, of the type in which the dies interact to cut or slice through the sheets to form portions of material which are spread via material flow by the die interaction to prevent separation of the sheets. The female die has plates which provide counter-edges which interact with the male punch to provide the desired cutting. The metal plates are leaf springs which yield after the cutting to permit spreading of the material.

  • Patent number: 4610070
Abstract: A process for manufacturing clad strip is such that a core strip, in particular a metal core strip, is fed to a roll gap formed by at least two rolls and is clad at least on one side by a cladding strip. In the course of the said process the cladding strip is attached to the core strip by mechanical deformation before reaching the roll gap. This takes place most usefully when a hot core strip (e.g. aluminum strip at 400.degree.-600.degree. C.) is to be clad with a cold cladding strip (e.g. aluminum strip at 20.degree.-70.degree. C.). A corresponding device for manufacturing clad strip is such that the core strip, before it enters the roll gap, is engaged above and/or below by an attachment roll, and the cladding strip is introduced between the core strip and the attachment roll.

Abstract: A bonnet is locked to the body of a valve into which the bonnet screws by a sheet metal bonnet lock which includes a portion that will mate with facets on the bonnet or with the sides of the valve body. Another portion of the bonnet lock is then deformed to mate with the other of the bonnet facets or valve body sides. The portion of the bonnet lock that mates with the facets on the bonnet circumscribes the bonnet such that one portion of the bonnet lock is fixed to the bonnet and the other portion is fixed to the valve body following deformation of the bonnet lock to prevent the bonnet from turning relative to the valve body.

  • Patent number: 4585255
Abstract: A tube coupling with only a body and a threaded member is disclosed, the threaded member usually being a nut to overlie an outer sleeve and an inner sleeve unitary with the body. These two sleeves define therebetween an annular groove to receive the end of the tube. The method of tightening the nut onto the body provides that a generally conical cam surface on the nut interacts with a shallower taper conical cam follower surface on the outer sleeve to force this cam follower surface radially inwardly and longitudinally inwardly forming annular radially inward bulges on the outer and inner sleeves and on the tube trapped therebetween. This interlocks the tube with the coupling, and provides a fluid seal at three different places, the inner wall of the tube, the outer wall of the tube, and the end of the tube at the bottom of the groove.
