  • Patent number: 4417380
Abstract: A method of securing a bearing either bushing, roller or ball bearing and a spacer or fitting into a soft non-ferrous material such as aluminum and materials of that hardness. A bearing of this invention containing an annular groove and adjacent forming shoulder or spacer, at least 1/2 a millimeter greater in diameter than the body of the bushing is inserted into a predrilled hole. A metal ring is formed in the annular groove as the shoulder is pressed into the parent material. This metal ring being a part of the parent material and being packed into the annular groove prevents retraction of the bearing or spacer during operation by its diameter being greater than the annular groove in the bearing. The material in the annular groove is of a lesser diameter than the body of the bearing and fitting and interfers with axial movement. The shoulder of the bearing or fitting has longitudinal grooves around its circumference.

  • Patent number: 4395900
Abstract: A stiff ring useful for such purposes as electric motor housings. The ring is a single piece, usually having a ratio of diameter to wall thickness less than about 40:1. The ring consists of a single piece of steel cut from a continuous strip having a tongue at one end and a recess at the other. These have interfering tapered locking segments to prevent separation, and are interlinked with one another. The process for making the ring comprises forming the strip in a U-shape around a cylindrical mandrel by interaction with a first half cylindrical die part, and then while holding the bent strip with the mandrel and first die part pressing the free ends so that they symmetrically pass along the inside surface of a second semi-cylindrical die part with the interlocking ends of the strip shaped and riding the die in such a manner that the tongue and recess inter-engage one another with a minimum of physical interference.

  • Patent number: 4356888
Abstract: A structural joint for joining two elements, the first element having an elongate major tongue of malleable deformable material and in one embodiment an elongate minor tongue, the second element having a curled tab. The major and minor tongues define an elongate recess adapted to receive the curled tab on joint formation. The two elements are pressed together to press the curled tab of the second element into the recess between the minor and major tongues of the first element and to cause the minor tongue and the second element to mutually penetrate and deform each other. The major tongue is then deformed about the curled tab to form at least a portion of an encircling curl which contacts the curled tab's external surface. When the elements are so joined, the gap between the major and minor tongues is less than the width of the curled tab, thereby precluding removal of the curled tab from the encircling curl.

  • Patent number: 4349954
Abstract: This invention is directed to a method of joining the surfaces of two metal structures in a mechanical bond. The joining process can be performed in either art or vacuum. The metal surfaces of the structures 10 and 12 that are to be bonded are exposed to an ion beam 14 together with a target 18 of low sputtering yield material. This material deposits on the surfaces and creates sites of sputter resistance which evolve into peaks 20 of a cone like surface microstructure. The textured metal surfaces are arranged in face to face relationship and compressed together with plastic deformation which mechanically interlocks the cone 22. A large interface area is produced which minimizes thermal and electrical losses. Also, no electrical power or heat is required during metal joining.

The heat exchange material is formed into upper and lower, or first and second pieces having longitudinal, partially circular recesses parallel to the length of a tube for engaging opposite sides of the tube. The radii of the recesses corresponds to the outer diameter of the tube. The recesses extend through less than 180.degree. so that the flat parts of the heat exchange surface are spaced leaving a gap prior to securement to the tubes. The two pieces are initially formed to interengage in such a way that they can be joined by lock seaming on opposite sides of the tube. Forces are applied to the interengaged pieces, forcing them together, stretching the heat exchange material at the recesses, thereby producing a tight interference fit between the heat exchange surfaces and the tube to provide minimum resistance to conduction of heat and at the same time securing the pieces together by lock seaming.

Abstract: The present invention is a method for constructing a solid state diffusion bonded connection which is homogeneous, capable of efficiently transmitting stress and capable of being analyzed. The method provides for the achievement of homogeneous filleted junctures which are required by long-life structural fatigue specifications. The method also provides a mechanical interlock feature which produces a fail-safe connection. By the invented method, only the amount of material required to form the desired structural connection is used. The members to be joined are cut from sheets or plates of a wrought alloy such that a predetermined amount of metal is available to produce the diffusion bond and specified filleting. Minimum force is required to produce the connection since only localized plastic flow diffusion bonding is required in the vicinity of the juncture of the members. The formed connection is homogeneous and has the same properties across the connection as the parent material.

Abstract: A vent structure for reliable long term operation at high temperatures is fabricated by annealing a tubing of predetermined length and size, placing a predetermined number of strands of stabilized zirconium oxide yarn of predetermined diameter longitudinally into one end of the tubing a predetermined distance therein, flattening and coiling and pressing the end portion of the tubing containing the yarn at predetermined pressures, annealing the formed tubing, and installing a particulate filter in the undeformed (normally lower) portion of the tubing. For use in venting helium generating reactor control pins located under hot molten sodium, a vent assembly including the vent structure and providing an air lock between the outer molten sodium and the vent is affixed to the upper end of each control pin. This is a division of application Ser. No. 376,527, filed July 5, 1973, now U.S. Pat. No. 3,803,816.

  • Patent number: 3934918
Abstract: A load lifting band with an overload indicator includes a junction for strip material which is particularly useful for joining the ends of a strip of material so as to form a closed band for lifting heavy loads. The junction consists of a pair of overlapping sheet-like sections provided with interconnecting parts. The interconnecting parts each include a plurality of slits and corresponding sheet portions extending from the general plane of the respective section, the sheet portions of one of the sections each cooperating with a pair of slits in the other section so as to prevent separation of the sections in response to a force tending to move the same apart. The slits in each of the sections are divided into two sets each of which includes at least two groups of laterally spaced slits. The number of slits in one group is greater than that in the corresponding other group.

  • Patent number: 3934327
Abstract: To fasten together two or more overlying sheets of metal or other material having plasticity or deformable properties by partially piercing and deforming minor areas of the sheets, a pierce-and-forming punch is used in cooperation with a double-acting press having two separately actuatable rams. For displacing the minor areas of the overlying sheets, one of the rams carries a hollow cylindrical pierce-and-forming die, the die cavity of which is vertically aligned with, and cooperates with, a pierce-and-forming punch supported in the base. The other of the rams carries a flattening punch which is slidably movable within the central bore of the hollow cylindrical die. Fine adjustment means are included so that the position of the die may be adjusted for different thickness of sheets to be fastened, and also for wear on the die and/or punch.
