Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a technique which may be used in conjunction with an automated Z-pin insertion process to automatically monitor the insertion energy applied to the Z-pins during the initial insertion phase of the automated insertion process, and compare it to an empirically derived value for good insertions, thereafter allowing the insertion process to continue to a predetermined additional insertion depth before terminating the process. The insertion energy is calculated by cumulatively summing the insertion force and multiplying it by the insertion time, thus yielding the cumulative energy. At a specified, predetermined insertion depth, the energy accumulation is stopped and the value at the initial insertion depth is stored and compared to an empirically derived value. If the value is less than the empirical value, the insertion energy is too low, thus indicating that either a partial grid insertion is being encountered or defective Z-pins are being inserted.

  • Patent number: 6854173
Abstract: The fastener installation apparatus and method of the present invention include a housing and a moveable body at least partially within the housing. The moveable body defines a plurality of openings and is fixably attached to at least one piston, which is in moveable contact with the housing. First and second cavities are defined on opposite sides of the piston and respective openings in the moveable body are in communication with opposite sides of the piston. In addition, a valve directs a fluid through the appropriate openings in the moveable body and into the first cavity or the second cavity, as desired, which, in turn, alternately extends and retracts the moveable body relative to the housing. A jaw extends from the housing in alignment with the moveable body, such that the jaw and the moveable body cooperate to install a fastener upon extension of the moveable body.

  • Patent number: 6722013
Abstract: The invention relates to a method, a tool and a punch (1) for joining a sunken punch to one or more metal plates (2, 3). According to said method, in a single step, the plate or plates are deep-drawn into a deep-draw opening (5) of a female mould or then possibly crushed so that the displaced material fixes and joins the punch (1) to the plate or plates in a positive fit. The punch (1) may present further possibilities for engagement for creating a connection to other components.

Abstract: After a rod 4 with a pre-formed annular groove 21 is fixed on a reception die 26, a collar blank 23 is fitted on the rod 4. Then the die 25 is advanced toward the reception die 26 along the rod 4, urging the collar blank 23 into its forming bore 27, causing the inner diameter portion of the blank 23 to enter into the annular groove 21 by a plastic flow. Subsequently by a further advancement of the die 25, an annular projection 29 formed at the bottom surface of the forming bore 27 is driven into the end surface of the collar blank 23 to cause the blank to 23 plastically flow further into the annular groove 21.

  • Patent number: 6640414
Abstract: A method of attaching metal members, including placing the metal members in contact with each other and fastening them with a metal fastener having a central axis wherein the metal fastener includes an elongated portion having a substantially constant cross-sectional area at any cross-section taken along a length of the elongated portion perpendicular to the axis of the fastener and includes a topographically varying outer surface. The fastener is driven through the metal sheet and into the metal substrate during rotation of the fastener thereby inducing friction between the fastener, the sheet and the substrate for locally melting the members to form a flowable material that solidifies for attaching the members, the flowable material and the fastener together.

  • Patent number: 6443238
Abstract: A cavity wall which is usually made with a hollow concrete block as the inner wythe and brick as the outer wythe is disclosed. A special purpose insertion tool is fitted to a standard hammer tool. A center pin is provided in the insertion tool made with an indent to match the pointed end of the tie. The pin is then pressed into the SDS fitting which is the connection into the drill. The tie end is supported by a short sleeve which, when it contacts the face of the wall, retracts against a spring until the tie driving is completed. A modified embodiment of the adapter recognizes that the tie when activated by the hammer invariably rotates clockwise. Accordingly, if the spring is wound clockwise, the bottom tail end will dig into its seat. On the other hand, if it is wound counterclockwise, it rotates in a “tail skid” relationship to the seat.

  • Patent number: 6324744
Abstract: A specialized mounting arrangement for an accessory such as an engine driven air conditioner compressor to an engine is utilized featuring a pair of press fitted bushings in a pair of arms of the mount and a single bolt extending therethrough. The arms of the mount assembly are constructed so that they straddle portions of an anchor member attached to the engine. A connector bolt is inserted through one bushing in one arm of the mount and then thorough a passage in the anchor member, and next into engagement with internal threads carried by the other bushing which his carried by the other arm of the mount. Rotation of the bolt moves the bushings toward one another and against the ends of the anchor member to clamp the anchor and thus the accessory therebetween.

  • Patent number: 6311785
Abstract: A helical wedge tie, anywhere from 2½ inches to 4 inches in length, (which is approximately the width of a standard brick), can be utilized to wedgingly engage the mortar in a wall after a helical main tie has been passed all the way through the mortar and secured in the concrete. The wedge tie may have the same helical pitch as that of the main tie, or it may be a pitch somewhat tighter or shorter to not only fill the space between the host tie and the mortar, but wedgingly engage the same. The auxiliary wedge pin may be pointed at both ends, pointed at one end, or even blunt at both ends. Successful fixes have been made where one end is sheared, and has a relatively chisel-like end. The method of the invention is directed to the reinforcing of a tie in a wall reinforcing environment, where the outer portion of the tie passes through a softer material, and a subsequent reinforcement of the tie portion in the soft material becomes desirable.
