Abstract: One or more electron beam tubes are arranged to direct electron beams in air or other ambient gas toward a target object. The electron beams ionize air producing a plasma or glow discharge. An electric or magnetic field in the beam trajectory sustains the plasma by trapping secondary electrons formed by collisions of beam electrons with the ambient atmosphere. Target objects may be placed in the field for surface treatment, such as sterilization, or for thin film growth. In the latter case, the apparatus is enclosed in a housing and a reactive gas is introduced into the beam trajectory. The gas is one which is crackable by the electron beam or plasma, such as an organic silicon compound which would liberate silicon for combination with ionized oxygen to form silicon dioxide layers on a substrate.

Abstract: A flat display panel assembly includes an evacuated glass envelope having a faceplate, a source of electron beams, a control electrode assembly including a stack of electrode substrates each having a predetermined pattern of electrode holes defined therein, and anodes formed by depositing phosphor material on the faceplate in correspondence with the electrode holes in the electrode substrates. At least one of the electrode substrates is made of a material having a coefficient of thermal expansion different from that of the remaining electrode substrates. The electrodes holes in such one of the electrode substrates are so defined and so arranged as to be offset from the corresponding electrode holes in the other electrode substrates by an increasing as a distance increases from a center portion of the electrode assembly towards the perimeter of the electrode assembly. With the electrode holes so defined and so arranged, the electrode substrates are movably supported to accomodate the thermal expansion.

Abstract: Various embodiments of a helical coil deflection structure of a CRT are described and illustrated which provide shielding between adjacent turns of the coil on either three or four sides of each turn in the coil. Threaded members formed with either male or female threads and having the same pitch as the deflection coil are utilized for shielding the deflection coil with each turn of the helical coil placed between adjacent threads which act to shield each coil turn from adjacent turns and to confine the field generated by the coil to prevent or inhibit cross-coupling between adjacent turns of the coil to thereby prevent generation of fast fields which might otherwise deflect the beam out of time synchronization with the electron beam pulse.

Abstract: A cathode ray tube, such as a blue luminescing projection television display tube including, in an evacuated envelope (1), an electron gun (5) for generating an electron beam (6) which is focused to a spot (8) on a display screen (7) by means of an electrostatic focusing lens (27, 30) and which is deflected across this display screen (7) in two mutually perpendicular directions (x, y). A structure (37) magnetized as a four-pole and consisting of a magnetic half-hard material is provided at the area of a focusing lens formed by two electrodes (27, 30) and coaxially around the gun axis (20), the axes of the four-pole being located centrally between the deflection directions. The structure (37) extends the spot in the vertical direction so that phosphor saturation, particularly in blue projection tubes is reduced.

The upper and lower coil layers are opposed each other and disposed on the outer surface of a duct. The end portions of the upper and lower coil layers positioned in a range of a predetermined width are so extended by a predetermined length in the longitudinal direction that the integral value of only sextupole components of a magnetic field is minimized or set nearly zero among the entire multi-pole components of the magnetic field, thereby enabling to make a synchrotron radiation ray generating device with good efficiency of accelerating particles.

A two-element anode electrode for the gun includes first and second cup-shaped elements each having an apertured electrode face. • Patent number: 4975618
Abstract: In a color picture tube apparatus, a deflection unit is provided around a color picture tube and a leakage magnetic is generated from the deflection unit. A metal cover made of aluminum, which covers an electrical power source is located in a space to which leakage magnetic field is reached and a first opposition magnetic field is generated from the metal cover due to the leakage magnetic field which produces an eddy current in the metal cover. A metal plate made of a conductive and non-magnetic material is so located between the deflection unit and the metal cover as to be substantially perpendicular to the metal cover. Thus, a second opposition magnetic field is so generated from the metal plate due to the leakage magnetic field as to substantially cancel the first opposition magnetic field.

Abstract: A magnetic field generating device provides a useful magnetic field within a specific retgion, while keeping nearby surrounding regions virtually field free. By placing an appropriate current density along a flux line of the source, the stray field effects of the generator may be contained. One current carrying structure may support a truncated cosine distribution, and it may be surrounded by a current structure which follows a flux line that would occur in a full coaxial double cosine distribution. Strong magnetic fields may be generated and contained using superconducting cables to approximate required current surfaces.
