Abstract: A mobile vehicle measuring device for the measuring of a vehicle, such as a race car, from certain reference points such as the bottom side of the vehicle instead of the driving surface. The apparatus comprises a level support platform with adjustable wheel plates to center the vehicle, a movable lift gauge rack to provide reference points for various measuring gauges, a vehicle loading device, a vehicle load measuring device and various preset measuring gauges cooperating with the lift gauge rack to check efficiently all pertinent measurements with which the vehicle must comply.
Abstract: A tool for use in adjusting the camber and/or caster of a vehicle wheel attached to a suspension system of a vehicle having a strut member which is secured at an upper end of the vehicle at a first position includes a mechanism for selecting a second position to secure the strut member to the vehicle and includes a mechanism for selecting the second position including a guide for assisting in making an aperture at the second position.
Abstract: A suspension gauge with an inner rod (12) sliding in an outer tube (10). The marker ring (18) slides along the calibrated scale of the inner rod marking the deflection of the suspension system at various loaded and unloaded positions. In addition a locking mechanism (16)(24)(26)(28)(30)(32)(34)(36)(38) is provided at the lower end of the gauge as an attachment device to the rear axle hub. At the upper end of the gauge a swivel block (22) and spring clip (14) are provided to attach the gauge to the motorcycle rear fender.
Abstract: A tool for adjusting the alignment in a wheeled vehicle steering structure using a bushing includes a plate having indicia disposed around an aperture that runs through the plate wherein the indicia indicate an angular position for rotatably adjusting the bushing and including a mechaism for securing the plate to the steering structure in a selectable and fixed position and for retaining the bushing in a position during alignment.
Abstract: A gauge for measuring the fender well dimensions of an automobile is provided and includes a handle portion and a head portion. The head portion is used to measure well width so that one can determine the widest usable tire. The gauge is also used to calculate rim offset in a rim suitable for the selected wide tire.
Abstract: A hand-manipulated device is provided for ascertaining the operating temperature range of a spark plug by measuring the length of the ceramic insulator component of the spark plug. The device is comprised of an elongated probe rod slideably held by a holder having a scale. In use, the tip of the holder is placed upon the upper extremity of the ceramic insulator, and the probe rod is extended downwardly until it contacts the base of the insulator. The length of the probe rod thus extended is shown by an indicator interactive with the scale.
Abstract: A timing pin assembly for insertion into an aperture in the bell housing of an engine to be timed. The assembly includes a pin carried by a housing and projecting outwardly from the housing. The pin is urged to its outward position by a spring and is retractable into the housing. When the pin is in its extended position it engages a detent in the flywheel of the engine and prevents the flywheel from turning while the engine is timed.
Abstract: The present invention includes a bushing indexing tool having an aperture in its upper surface which may be reproducibly located around a rotatable caster and camber adjustment offset bushing. A scale disposed around the aperture indicates the angular position of the bushing with respect to the steering structure. The invention also includes a data base to predetermine the desired rotational angular setting of a particular bushing in order to correct caster and camber.
Abstract: A gaging tool for checking the alignment of spaced apart holes located on a common axis, having particular utility for checking the alignment of bearing seats on half round yokes for universal joints. A pair of gage bushings are secured in the bearing seats by retaining straps. An alignment bar is passed through the internal gage bore of one of the bushings. When the bearing seats or holes are in alignment, the alignment bar will pass into the other of the pair of gage bushings.
Abstract: An apparatus tests rack teeth of a rack member for a rack and pinion vehicle steering gear. The apparatus comprises a support for mounting the rack member for longitudinal displacement and a helically toothed test pinion member having an axis. A carriage mounts the test pinion member for rotation about its axis and in driving engagement with the rack member. A resilient biasing spring urges the test pinion member into engagement with the rack member and provides a predetermined lateral spacing between the longitudinal axis of the rack member and the axis of the test pinion member. A screw adjusts the biasing force of the resilient biasing spring at the predetermined lateral spacing. A drive effects displacement of one of the rack and test pinion members to impart displacement to the other of the rack and test pinion members.
Abstract: Vehicle body measuring apparatus having first and second extendible members for positioning on opposed sides of a vehicle body. A longitudinal member is connectible between the upper ends of the first and second members. First and second pointers are slidably mountable on the longitudinal member. Connecting means are provided for pivotally connecting the first and second members relative to the vehicle body and clamping means are provided for clamping the first and second members in a fixed position relative to opposed sides of the vehicle body.
Abstract: An automobile wheel bolt circle gauge which includes a pair of movable projections which can be inserted into adjacent bolt holes to measure the distance therebetween and register the distance on indicia inscribed on the gauge which can be interpreted to determine the maker of the wheel or the automobile on which it might fit.
Abstract: A vehicle alignment system uses transverse, longitudinal and vertical bars mounted on a vehicle and equating to X, Y and Z axes for establishing the dimensions of the vehicle, which dimensions are then compared to the vehicle engineering specifications. The transverse bars are connected to the underside of the vehicle and, to enable quickness and ease of transferring the alignment system between vehicles, quick connect fittings extend between the transverse and longitudinal bars. Additional supports extend between the longitudinal bars and a base surface. The system is arranged so that transverse bars in a path of entry and exit of the vehicle can be readily removed and the vehicle removed and replaced, while maintaining the alignment system substantially set up and ready for use. The process improves the speed of use of the system by substantially alleviating the dismantling previously required.
Abstract: An improved measuring bar device includes first and second parallel bars retained in a center housing by an array of biased and canted rollers that engage cam surfaces defined by the bars to provide for equal and opposite movement of the bars while maintaining the bars in parallel array.
Abstract: A frame straightening and measuring system for auto body repair is provided including position locating arms moveable along each of three axis, each of said arms being provided with an extendable retractable measuring device such as a roll-up type tape measure provided with means for clamping the free end thereof at a desired location on the extendable position locating bars whereby the correct position of a damaged part relative to the axis of the motor vehicle can be determined accurately.
