Abstract: This disclosure provides an electrical switch based on tunneling electric contacts. Electrodes of the switch are formed to have reciprocal apparent contact surfaces, each smooth such that a compressed (in contact) composite mean asperity height between these surfaces is significantly smaller than an electron tunneling length of the switch. A movement mechanism is used to physically move one or both electrodes to vary the gap between electrodes to be greater than/less than the electron tunneling length. In select embodiments, the movement mechanism is electrically actuated and is amenable to relatively high frequency operation. The nano smooth surfaces provide for a tunneling switch where current flow is not primarily dependent on contact force between electrodes, and leads to a highly conductive ON state exceeding high performance, high-contact force mechanical switches, while also being amenable to high frequency operation.

  • Patent number: 8514037
Abstract: A device and method for operating automotive battery system relays and related switches. By aligning a magnetic field with a direction of current flow in a contact plate disposed between magnets that are producing the field, a generated Lorentz force can be used to promote arc extinguishing during a relay opening sequence, while simultaneously reducing the tendency of the Lorentz forces to interfere with the operation of a solenoid or other switch-activating mechanisms. By using a rotary-based mechanism to establish contact between a contact plate and current-carrying terminals, the likelihood of inadvertent opening of the relay is reduced. Such devices and methods may be used in conjunction with hybrid-powered and electric-powered vehicles.

Abstract: A circuit breaker comprises a latching plate rotatably coupled to a moveable plate, and tensile type latching springs, each latching spring having two ends fixed to the latching plate and the moveable plate, respectively. Time taken for a moveable contact to be lifted up from a contact time point between the moveable contact and a fixed contact may be shortened, and thus a time duration for which an accident current flows may be reduced. Accordingly, the amount of energy applied to the circuit breaker may be reduced, and a breaking function of the circuit breaker may be enhanced. Furthermore, since a contact pressure between the moveable contact and the fixed contact has a constant change, a reliability on a conductive state of the moveable contact and the fixed contact may be enhanced.

Abstract: A power control apparatus in the form of a standard, toggle, wall-mounted light switch for remote actuation of an electrical load or local manual override. A switch housing supports and retains a latching relay that includes power terminals, a switching terminal for remote actuation by a control signal, and a manual override. A switch lever extends from the body of the switch housing for manual actuation to override the state of the relay. The switch lever engages the manual override of the latching relay upon manual actuation by a person. On pushing the reset button to open, the converse is true. This sequential operation protects the circuit from an inadvertent making of the hot contacts while the neutral contacts were still open.
