  • Patent number: 9691338
Abstract: According to an aspect, the liquid crystal display device includes: an expansion coefficient determining unit that determines an expansion coefficient of each of partial areas based on a signal level of the first, the second, and the third colors; a luminance level determining unit that determines a luminance level of each partial area based on the signal level; a signal processing unit that uses the expansion coefficient to expand the signal level; and a light source control unit that controls brightness of a light source based on the expansion coefficient and the luminance level. The light source can change the brightness of the partial areas individually. The light source control unit controls the light source such that the brightness of the light source in a partial area having a luminance level equal to or higher than a predetermined threshold is higher than the brightness based on the expansion coefficient.

  • Patent number: 9524679
Abstract: A method and system for modifying a pulse width modulation signal for controlling the backlit illumination intensity of a liquid crystal display. The modified pulse width modulated signal may be selected to operate with at least one pulse having a first duty cycle with the remaining pulses in the pulse width modulation signal having a second duty cycle across a selected number of pulses making up a given time period (i.e., frame). By utilizing more than one duty cycle for the pulses of the pulse width modulated signal to drive light sources in a display during a given frame, the overall number of backlit illumination intensities for the liquid crystal display may be increased. By distributing the differing pulse duty cycles within a group of pulses of within a frame, visible artifacts may be reduced.

Abstract: The present invention provides driving methods for electrophoretic color display devices. The backplane system used for the driving methods is found to be simpler which renders color display devices more cost effective. More specifically, the driving method comprises first driving all pixels towards a color state by modulating only the common electrode, followed by driving all pixels towards their desired color states by maintaining the common electrode grounded and applying different voltages to the pixel electrodes.

  • Patent number: 9349323
Abstract: In a pixel circuit, during a period during which an organic EL element is not emitting light, transistors are in an “on” state and the organic EL element is reversed-biased by a low-level power-supply potential and a reverse-biasing power-supply potential. A reverse-direction voltage determined by a reverse-direction current that depends on the degree to which degradation of the organic EL element has progressed is thus written to a capacitor. A data voltage is then supplied to the capacitor via another capacitor, bringing the drive voltage of a transistor that controls the current that drives the organic EL element to Vsig+Voledr. This makes it possible to minimize decreases in the emission luminance of an electrooptical element such as an organic EL element due to degradation thereof over time.
