Abstract: To improve the quality of a liquid crystal display device, writing of an image signal and lighting of a backlight are sequentially performed not in the whole pixel portion of the liquid crystal display device but in each given region of the pixel portion. Thus, the frequency of input of an image signal to each pixel of the liquid crystal display device can be increased. As a result, display degradation caused in the liquid crystal display device such as color break can be suppressed, and the quality of an image can be improved.

The timing control signal generating unit generates a first gate timing control signal for controlling a scan direction of the liquid crystal display panel in a sequential direction and a second gate timing control signal for controlling the scan direction in a reverse sequential direction. The gate drive circuit supplies a gate pulse to the gate lines while a shift direction of the gate pulse changes in response to the first and second gate timing control signals.

Abstract: An electro-optical device includes a display unit that has a plurality of pixel portions constituting a display area on a substrate and an image signal processing. The image signal processing circuit generates an image signal that sets a first subframe frame luminance of the pixel portion in a first subframe and sets a second subframe luminance of the pixel portion in a second subframe. The first subframe and the second subframe are obtained by partitioning a first frame of a first frame image signal. The first frame has a frame luminance. The first subframe luminance is higher than the frame luminance and the second subframe luminance is lower than the frame luminance.

Abstract: A field-sequential display is operated in one of a color mode or a grayscale mode. In the color mode, a video source provides image content in the form of multiple-color image data having a frame rate of X Hz and a display controller uses the multiple-color image data to drive the field-sequential display so as provide multiple-color image content at the field-sequential display. In the grayscale mode, the display controller generates grayscale image data from the multiple-color image data and the display controller then drives the field-sequential display with the grayscale image data at a lower frame rate of Y Hz. While in the grayscale mode, the display controller can take advantage of the enhanced contrast provided by the grayscale image content to reduce or disable backlighting at the field-sequential display. The reduced timing requirements afforded by the lower frame rate, as well as the reduction or elimination of backlighting, can reduce power consumption compared to the color mode.
