Abstract: To restrain decrease of display quality because of increases in flicker level and decrease of uniformity in screen luminance caused by increases in the overcharging effect when an amorphous metal oxide semiconductor or an organic semiconductor that has an field-effect mobility greater than amorphous silicon is used for pixel TFTs in a liquid crystal display device or organic EL display device. A new relational formula is derived for punch-through voltage in gray scale display, where the visibility of flicker, screen burn-in, and the like is high, and in-plane differential in counter electrode potential, which are an index of the overcharging effect. A design is made so as to satisfy conditions for decreasing the in-plane differential in counter electrode potential that have been newly derived on the basis of this formula to an allowable limit value or less.

Abstract: Techniques are provided for unifying steps of sealing material so that the yield and the reliability of a liquid-crystal display device become high. A starting film of scanning lines is patterned so that prismatic dummy wirings 301 for the first layer which are not electrically connected are formed in regions R1 and R2, and wirings 302 extending from the pixel section are formed in a region R3, and wirings 303 having connection end portions 303a are formed in a region R4. After an interlayer insulation film is formed, the starting film of the signal lines is patterned so that the dummy wirings 304 for the second layer are formed to embed the gaps between the wirings 301 to 303, and also the wirings 305 and the wirings 303 which extend from the pixel portion are connected to each other. This permits unification of the cross-sectional structure of the sealing material formation region.

Abstract: A D/A conversion circuit in accordance with the present invention, which is provided with a switch swD, allows a writing operation of a voltage (a true gradation voltage) to be performed at a higher speed by first applying a first voltage (a voltage close to the true gradation voltage), which is supplied without passing through a resistor element, to an output line and then applying a second voltage (the true gradation voltage), which is supplied via the resistor element, to the output line. Thus, the present invention can provide a D/A conversion circuit capable of writing display data to liquid crystal cells with higher precision at higher speed, and a semiconductor device utilizing such a D/A conversion circuit.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display uses a layout which reduces the number of data lines relative to the number of pixel columns by providing one data line for every two pixel columns. The display is structured to prevent a passivation layer from becoming opaque due to a manufacturing haze effect by forming the pixel electrode below a gate insulating layer. It is structured to prevent a drain electrode from being damaged due to an etchant used for patterning the pixel electrode. Further, it is structured to prevent a short circuit between a common voltage line and a gate line while not substantially reducing an aperture ratio by disposing a common voltage contact hole for electrically connecting the common voltage line with a common electrode between vertically extending portions of two gate lines that generally extend horizontally.
