  • Patent number: 8802214
Abstract: Structures and manufacturing processes of an ACF array using a non-random array of microcavities of predetermined configuration, shape and dimension. The manufacturing process includes fluidic filling of conductive particles onto a substrate or carrier web comprising a predetermined array of microcavities, or selective metallization of the array followed by filling the array with a filler material and a second selective metallization on the filled microcavity array. The thus prepared filled conductive microcavity array is then over-coated or laminated with an adhesive film. Cavities in the array, and particles filling the cavities, can have a unimodal, bimodal, or multimodal distribution.

  • Patent number: 8603358
Abstract: A liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound according to the present invention is used in a liquid crystal display element to which a liquid crystal alignment capability is provided by polymerization. The composition contains a polymerizable compound that polymerizes without a photopolymerization initiator or with only an extremely small amount of photopolymerization initiator. Therefore, the alignment after the polymerization becomes more stable and the display characteristics do not degrade. Thus, the polymerizable compound is suitable as a practical component of the liquid crystal composition. A liquid crystal display element that uses the liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound according to the present invention can be suitably used for VA and IPS liquid crystal display elements.

Abstract: The occurrence of a defective orientation of a polymer/liquid crystal composite is suppressed. In addition, the occurrence of defective display of a liquid crystal display device including the polymer/liquid crystal composite is suppressed. In the polymer/liquid crystal composite exhibiting a blue phase, a plurality of domains are included and defective orientations easily occur at boundaries between the domains. Thus, by lowering orientation periodicities at boundaries between the domains, a defect-free orientation to high orientation periodicities at the boundary between adjacent domains can be obtained. Specifically, the polymer/liquid crystal composite exhibiting the blue phase includes the plurality of domains each of which has a size of 3 ?m or less.
