  • Patent number: 11177058
Abstract: A composite surge arrester assembly and method of construction protects electrical devices from voltage spikes by limiting the voltage supplied to an electric device by shorting to ground any unwanted voltages above a safe threshold. The composite surge arrester assembly forms an arrester array from an alternating arrangement of deformable conductive contact plates, and metal oxide varistor (MOV) blocks. The contact plates bend and have various types of surfaces to create uniform contact with MOV blocks. The MOV blocks are dimensioned to minimize metal mass. An epoxy impregnated fiberglass reinforcement member wraps around the arrester array at an angle between 0° to 90°, and preferably 45°, relative to the axial disposition of arrester array, while also purging air pockets therebetween. The reinforcement member dampens acoustic shock waves from high current impulses while maintaining electrical contact between MOV blocks. A polymer housing encapsulates the epoxy and fiberglass reinforced arrester array.

  • Patent number: 9169826
Abstract: To effectively perform lightning protection in a blade for wind power generation and to prevent the blade from being damaged when arresting lightning. The lightning protection structure of the blade for wind power generation includes a conductive lightning receptor 1 attached to a part of the blade for wind power generation, and a ceramic member 10 interposed between at least surface-layer portions of the lightning receptor 1 and the blade 5. Therefore, an electric field is likely to concentrate at an interface between the ceramic member 10 having excellent heat resistance and the lightning receptor 1, so that it is possible to effectively prevent the blade 5 from being damaged due to a concentration of the electric field at the interface of the blade 5 attached with the lightning receptor 1 when arresting the lightning.

  • Patent number: 9171654
Abstract: The present disclosure provides a pellet composition having enhanced thermal stability for use in a thermally-actuated, current cutoff device. Certain inorganic stability additive particles, such as silica, talc, and siloxane, can be mixed with one or more organic compounds to form a thermal pellet composition. A solid thermal pellet maintains its structural rigidity up to a transition temperature (Tf), but further has improved overshoot temperature ranges. Therefore, the improved thermal pellets have a maximum dielectric capability temperature (Tcap), above which the pellet composition may lose substantial dielectric properties and conducts current that is at least 50° C. greater than the Tf. In certain variations, maximum dielectric capability temperature (Tcap) is greater than or equal to about 380° C.
