Abstract: A backlight system for a liquid crystal display includes a substantially planar, refractive waveguide having a first major face and a second major face opposite the first major face. The waveguide includes a viewable region corresponding to a viewable area of the liquid crystal display. The system further includes a light source positioned proximate to the second major face and within the viewing region for producing light. An injection feature is proximate to one or more of the second major face and the first major face and within the viewing region to optically couple the light into the waveguide such that the light becomes waveguided light. A plurality of extraction features is proximate to one or more of the second major face and the first major face and within the viewing region to optically couple the waveguided light out of the waveguide.

Abstract: A light emitting device includes a housing having a substantially elliptical perimeter and an elongated aperture for accepting the digits of a user's hand. A first light emitting source is positioned in the housing for projecting a beam of light into a distance in front of the user. A second light emitting source is positioned in the housing for projecting a beam of light toward a surface proximate the user's feet. The housing includes a handle between the aperture and the substantially elliptical perimeter for gripping the light emitting device and wherein the elliptical perimeter distributes a weight of the light emitting device substantially evenly across the user's grip to prevent the user's grip from becoming fatigued.

Abstract: Modular lighting fixtures that allow convenient installation and removal of LED-based light-generating modules and controller modules. In one example, a modular lighting fixture includes a housing configured to be recessed into or disposed behind an architectural surface such as ceiling, wall, or soffit, in new or existing construction scenarios. The fixture housing includes a socket configured to facilitate one or more of a mechanical, electrical and thermal coupling of the light-generating module to the fixture housing. The ability to easily engage and disengage the LED-based light-generating module with the socket, without removing the fixture housing itself, allows for straightforward replacement of the light-generating module upon failure, or exchange with another module having different light-generating characteristics.

Abstract: A light beam emitted from a light source (11) impinges on the spherical surface (20a) of a collimator lens (20) substantially perpendicularly thereto. A light beam making a small angle to the optical axis impinges on the ellipsoid (20c) and then it is refracted. The ellipsoid (20c) converts light beams diverging from a light source located at the first focal point thereof into parallel light beams. A light beam making a large angle to the optical axis impinges on an ellipsoid (20b) and then it is reflected totally off the ellipsoid (20b). A light beam diverging from a light source located at the first focal point of the ellipsoid (20b) is converted into a light beam being focused on the second focal point thereof. An ellipsoid (20d) converts the light beams focused on the second focal point thereof into parallel light beams.
