Abstract: An illumination obscurement device for controlling the obscurement of illumination from a light source which is optimized for use with a rectangular, arrayed, selective reflection device. In a preferred embodiment, a rotatable shutter with three positions is placed between a light source and a DMD. The first position of the shutter is a mask, preferably an out of focus circle. This out of focus circle creates a circular mask and changes any unwanted dim reflection to a circular shape. The second position of the shutter is completely open, allowing substantially all the light to pass. The third position of the shutter is completely closed, blocking substantially all the light from passing. By controlling the penumbra illumination surrounding the desired illumination, DMDs can be used in illumination devices without creating undesirable rectangular penumbras.

Abstract: A recessed light includes an enclosure with a cavity, an opening into the cavity and a mounting surface about the periphery of the opening. An intermediate light assembly including a peripheral frame and a lamp is mounted on the mounting surface of the enclosure. The peripheral frame includes a main frame and extension rings which can be stacked to extend the lamp away from the cavity. The lamp has an array of light emitting diodes on a substrate which is affixed to and thermally integral with a pivotally mounted reflector mounted to the peripheral frame. The reflector provides cooling fins for the array of light emitting diodes. A lens associated with a lens frame is attached to the intermediate lamp assembly.

Abstract: An articulating accessory cartridge for use in theatrical and commercial lighting fixtures in which optical accessories are utilized. The cartridge includes an outer member removably insertable in the fixture and an inner member telescopically retained in the outer member. One or several optical accessories can be removably received and retained in the inner member in an axial stack, depending upon effects desired. The inner cartridge member is telescopically extended before the cartridge is mounted on the fixture. As the cartridge is inserted, the uppermost accessory engages the end of a reflector associated with a light source in the fixture. Continued insertion of the cartridge results in telescopic retraction of the inner cartridge member, depending upon the number of accessories in the stack, until the outer cartridge member is fully seated. The accessories are held against the end of the reflector for optimal efficiency of the lighting and lighting effects.

Abstract: Presently disclosed is a lighting system and methods of using the lighting system for in vitro potency assay for photofrin. The lighting system includes a lamp housing, a first lens, an infrared absorbing filter, an optical filter, and a second lens. The lamp housing includes a lamp and a light-port. In operation, broad spectrum light from the lamp exits the lamp housing by passing through the light-port. The first lens then collimates the broad spectrum light that exits the lamp housing through the light-port. The infrared absorbing filter then passes a first portion of the collimated broad spectrum light to the optical filter and absorbs infrared light of the broad spectrum light. The optical filter then passes a second portion of the collimated broad spectrum light to the second lens. The second lens then disperses the second portion of the collimated light to provide uniform irradiation of a cell culture plate. A method of using the lighting system for studying a photosensitizer is also disclosed.

Abstract: There is provided a color-regulating device for illumination. The color-regulating device includes a light-valving structure for adjusting a flux ratio of outgoing light through the light-valving structure to incident light entering the light-valving structure, and a color-adjusting structure having a wavelength-band converting element for changing incident light with a wavelength band into outgoing light with a different wavelength band through the element. Wherein, the light-valving structure and the color-adjusting structure do not overlap on the traveling path of the light emitted from the light source. Mixing the outgoing light of the light source passing through the light-valving structure with the outgoing light of the light source passing through and at least a portion thereof converted by the color-adjusting structure with a different wavelength band yields a color-adjusted light of different color temperature from that of the light source.
