  • Patent number: 8223606
Abstract: A method for detecting a typical defect area on a disc track includes the following steps. Firstly, a source signal is provided. Then, first and second signals are generated according to the source signal. The first and second signals are held at the peak level of the source signal and respectively decreased at first and second drop rates. Then, first and second threshold values are subtracted from the first and second signals to generate first and second slice signals, respectively. Afterwards, the source signal is compared with either the first slice signal or the second slice signal. When the first slice signal is larger than the source signal, a typical defect signal is changed from a first level to a second level. Whereas, the typical defect signal is changed from the second level to the first level when the second slice signal is smaller than the source signal.

  • Patent number: 8218410
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for managing a defect of an optical disc. In the method, when a host requests data of an optical disc inserted into an optical disc drive (ODD) included in a device to be integrated with a solid state drive (SSD), an address of the requested data is compared with contents contained in defect management information managed within the SSD, and the requested data is read from the optical disc or from the defect management information according to a result of the comparing. The defect management information may include optical disc identification information, address information, defect type information and data of a corresponding address. When the optical disc is inserted into the ODD, defect management information regarding the optical disc may be generated and stored in the SSD. Accordingly, Read Delay or Read Fail, resulting from a defect of the optical disc, can be obviated.

  • Patent number: 8174942
Abstract: Disclosed data recording techniques prevent extremely decreasing writing/reading speed due to consecutive defects, which often occur when using a disk of large storage capacity, while allowing the size of a spare area used for alternate processing of a recordable optical disk to be changed. The disclosed data recording method comprises receiving from a higher-level device a write command to write data at a first address in a user area; writing the data at the first address; and reading the written data to thereby judge whether or not the first address is defective. If the first address is defective, a second address in a spare area is determined by use of a flag value that has been written to a lead-in area or a lead-out area at the time of initialization; and the data is written at the second address received from the higher-level device.

Abstract: An optical disc apparatus includes: a defect detecting section 124 for detecting, based on a light detection signal and with respect to a preset detection reference level, a fingerprint or a bubble on the disc 102 as a defect to output a defect detection signal; and a waveform shaping section 126 to output a hold signal that holds, in response to the defect detection signal, a signal from a tracking control section 109 at a level just before the defect has occurred. The apparatus is initially operated not to hold the signal from the tracking control section 109 even if there is a defect. But once a tracking failure has occurred during a read operation, settings are changed to hold the signal from the tracking control section 109 against the defect while the read operation is retried.

  • Patent number: 7957241
Abstract: A device for detecting defect signals on an optical disc includes a finite state machine (FSM) to control a servo system of an optical disk drive. When the FSM is in a DETECT state and defect signals are greater than thresholds, a detection counter is set to a first predetermined value and the FSM enters an ARM state. In the ARM state, when the detection counter counts zero, the FSM enters a KICK state and the detection counter is set to a second predetermined value. In the KICK state, a flag signal XDFCT is asserted. When the detection counter in the KICK state counts to zero, the FSM enters a WAIT state and the detection counter is set to a third predetermined value. When the flag signal XDFCT is asserted, corresponding servo control signals for the servo system are clamped to a programmable constant voltage.
