Abstract: An optical disk drive capable of detecting a surface deviation of a disk during a very short period includes an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) converting a focus error signal output from a pickup into digital data, and a central processing unit (CPU) writing an output of the ADC to a memory during one rotation of a motor according to a timing of a pulse signal output from a spindle motor. After that, the CPU reads data written to the memory and obtains a sine curve that minimizes the sum of squares of errors among data by a least square method. The CPU obtains a peak-to-peak value of the obtained sine curve and compares the peak-to-peak value to a predetermined threshold value, thereby determining the existence of the surface deviation of the disk.

Abstract: An optical disk apparatus carries out focusing operation at a position shifted by a very small distance from the surface of a disk or from the recording surface of the disk in such a condition that the disk is stopped or is rotating at a speed sufficiently lower than a normal operational speed for the first focusing operation, after that, the disk is rotated at the normal rotational speed and a focus deviation amount is stored, and then focusing operation on an information recording surface is performed while applying the stored focus deviation component to a focus moving means.

Abstract: In a method for determining defective blocks of an optical disc, a defect-detection procedure for each block of the optical disc is performed. After the defect-detection procedure, a preliminary defective group of the optical disc is realized. Subsequently, the track number between two selected defective blocks of the preliminary defective group are detected. When the track number is less than a predetermined number, the blocks lying in a linear region including the two selected blocks are defined as defective blocks in addition to all defective blocks included in the preliminary defective group.

Abstract: When there is a defect area in a specific recording layer, recording of information is continued and reduction in a recording rate is restrained. In an optical recording method for recording information on a multilayer optical recording medium having a plurality of recording layers by irradiating the recording layer with a beam spot, any recording layer is set as an escape recording layer. When a defect area is detected while information is recorded on another recording layer except for the escape recording layer, the beam spot moves to the escape recording layer to continue recording the information.

Abstract: A write-once recording medium preserving a data recording status of the write-once recording medium, a method of preserving the data recording status of a write-once recording medium, a medium including computer readable code for the same, and a recording and/or reproducing apparatus therefor. In the method of preserving the data recording status of a write-once recording medium, first, data is recorded on the write-once recording medium. Next, recording-status data, representing occupied areas, is produced and recorded in a temporary defect management area allocated in the write-once recording medium. Thereafter, a finalization command is received to preserve the data-recording status of the recording medium. Then, in response to the finalization command, predetermined data is recorded in a temporary defect management area to prevent further data recording on the write-once recording medium. Accordingly, the data recording status of the finalized write-once recording medium can be preserved.

The write once disc, includes a lead-in zone, a data area, and a lead-out zone. The write once disc includes a predetermined area storing area allocation information which indicates whether at least one section of the data area is allocated for disc defect management. In the disc and method, area allocation information specifying a structure of the data area is recorded on the disc, thus allowing a recording/reproducing apparatus to recognize the data area structure. Therefore, allocating areas, such as a spare area, for disc defect management other than an area for storing user data, to the data area is possible. The allocation of the areas for disc defect management to the data area enables effective use of the write once disc.
