Abstract: Communication systems are described that use signal constellations, which have unequally spaced (i.e. ‘geometrically’ shaped) points. In many embodiments, the communication systems use specific geometric constellations that are capacity optimized at a specific SNR. In addition, ranges within which the constellation points of a capacity optimized constellation can be perturbed and are still likely to achieve a given percentage of the optimal capacity increase compared to a constellation that maximizes dmin, are also described. Capacity measures that are used in the selection of the location of constellation points include, but are not limited to, parallel decode (PD) capacity and joint capacity.

Abstract: A NICAM system includes a NICAM deframer, a FIFO buffer and a symbol rate conversion (SRC) unit. The NICAM deframer obtains multiple deinterleaved symbols according to a strobe signal and a data signal in each timing and expands the deinterleaved symbols to corresponding multiple pulse code modulation (PCM) symbols. The FIFO buffer temporarily stores the symbols and outputs the PCM symbols at a local timing, rate. The SRC unit determines whether a SRC function is enabled according to the statuses of the symbols in the FIFO buffer every a constant time interval. When the SRC function is enabled, the SRC unit interpolates the PCM symbols to obtain multiple new PCM symbols and outputs the new PCM symbols at the local timing rate.

Abstract: To reflect advantages of a constant phase modulation waveform, the invention provides a pulse amplitude modulated PAM waveform that is a superposition of Q0?2L?1 PAM component pulses in each symbol interval such that a significant portion of signal energy over each symbol interval is within the Q0 PAM component pulses. The present invention distributes most signal energy in one pulse and progressively lower energies in the remaining Q0?1 pulses of a symbol interval. The Laurent Decomposition is a special case of the present invention, but the present invention exhibits the energy distribution of the Laurent Decomposition in non-binary CPM waveforms and in multi-h (binary and non-binary) CPM waveforms, where h is a modulating index. All energy is distributed among only Q=2L?1 pulses in each symbol interval, though only Q0<Q pulses may in fact be transmitted in certain embodiments. A method, transmitter, receiver, and computer program are disclosed.

Abstract: ZEB (zero excess bandwidth) modulation. The modulation rate of a signal is increased to the entirety of a communication channel's available bandwidth. Spectral zeroes at the edges of the available bandwidth now coincide with spectral zeroes at the edges of the Nyquist band and lead to ISI (intersymbol interference), which cannot be eliminated by equalization. Thus, in a ZEB system intersymbol interference (ISI) is intentionally allowed and dealt with by the known technique of TH (Tomlinson-Harashima) precoding. Comparison of conventional zero-ISI systems with ZEB systems, both exhibiting identical transmit spectra with finite spectral roll offs towards the edges of the available bandwidth, illustrate significant gains in channel throughput achievable by the ZEB systems. Similar gains can hardly be achieved by more sophisticated channel coding for zero-ISI systems. For ZEB systems an effective spectral shaping involving a simple infinite impulse response (IIR) of the overall channel is proposed.

  • Patent number: 7613255
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for transmitting data by means of at least one pulse sequence carried by a radio signal, in the course of which a power value representative of an amount of power carried by said pulse sequence is computed. The method according to the invention provides estimated values of noise affecting the radio transmission and of an amount of power which would be carried by each pulse sequence in the absence of noise, respectively, prior to the determination of a threshold value to which the power value is to be compared. The knowledge of such estimated values enables to compute a threshold value adapted to the communication conditions affecting any given pulse sequence, and hence to perform an optimal demodulation of any power-modulated UWB signal.

Abstract: Systems and methods for amplitude compressing a digital signal. An input signal is divided into frames having a first and second sets of samples. The samples in the second set are also in a subsequent frame. Peak values are determined for the first and second sets. One or more slopes are calculated based on the peak values. The slopes are used to define a scale factor which is applied to the first set to produce the output signal. For example, if the first peak value exceeds an amplitude threshold, first and last samples in the first set to exceed the amplitude threshold are found. Slopes are calculated for each of three regions of the first set demarcated by the first and last samples. In each region a slope is selected. These slopes along with an initial scale factor are used to calculate the scale factor.

Abstract: A technique is described herein for reducing audible artifacts in an audio output signal generated by decoding a received frame in a series of frames representing an encoded audio signal in a predictive coding system. In accordance with the technique, it is determined if the received frame is one of a predefined number of received frames that follow a lost frame in the series of the frames. Responsive to determining that the received frame is one of the predefined number of received frames, at least one parameter or signal associated with the decoding of the received frame is altered from a state associated with normal decoding. The received frame is then decoded in accordance with the at least one parameter or signal to generate a decoded audio signal. The audio output signal is then generated based on the decoded audio signal.
