Abstract: Presented herein is a method of recording user-selected interstitial media content, such as a television commercial. In the method, a media content stream is presented to a user. The media content stream includes an interstitial segment within a media content segment, such as a television program. In a media content segment listing, such as an electronic program guide, the media content segment is listed, but the interstitial segment is not. While the media content stream is presented, the stream is buffered. During or after the interstitial segment is being presented to the user, a command is received from the user to record the interstitial segment. In response to the command, beginning and ending points of the buffered interstitial segment are identified. The buffered interstitial segment is stored as a persistent recording based on the starting and ending points, and the persistent recording is distinguished from the media content segment.

Abstract: The disclosed method calculates video time density functions based on inter-frame mutual information or other similarity measures. The method includes acquiring a video sequence from memory, computing mutual information or other similarity measures between two consecutive frames of the video sequence, and constructing a video temporal density function based on the mutual information or similarity measures. The method enables fast navigation of the video sequence by performing a temporal quantization of the video time density function to determine a set of quanta. The video sequence can be navigated using the nearest neighbor video frames to the set of quanta. The method enables thumbnail extraction of a video sequence using statistical modeling by performing a temporal quantization of the video time density function to segment video sequence in time domain and using mixture (such as Gaussian mixture and ICA mixture) vector quantization to find the sample frames for each temporal segment.

A first interface is displayed and identifies a first media program. Via the first interface, a user requests that the first media program be recorded as a bookmark in a list of maintained bookmarks. Abstract: Methods and apparatus provide for an abstract model interpreter that defines an abstract model to represent an interactive video. The abstract model is defined independent of any export format. An interface for the abstract model is created to concurrently manage interpreting the abstract model according to a plurality of different export formats. For example, the abstract model interpreter can map a feature of the interactive video, which is described in the abstract model, to a corresponding feature supported by an export format. The interface is thereby utilized to interpret the abstract model to create a formatted interactive video, which is a version of the abstract model compliant with an export format from the plurality of different export formats. The interface further provides an edit capability that allows a user to modify how the feature of the interactive video is to be supported by any of the different export formats.

Abstract: A broadcast receiving device capable of easily setting area information. A control unit of a DVR transmits an acquisition request for area information to a TV. When the control unit receives a response to the acquisition request from the TV, the control unit extracts area information from the received response and performs a channel presetting using the extracted area information. A control unit of the TV has area information stored therein. When the control unit receives an acquisition request for area information from the DVR, the control unit transmits, as a response to the request, the stored area information to the DVR.

Abstract: An approach is provided for enriching media with meta-information blocks. Specifically, one or more segments of one or more media files are processed to determine meta-information (e.g., topics, annotations, meta-data, etc.) related to the one or more segments. Based on the determined meta-information, other media or related meta-information is determined, analyzed, and appended to the original media as one or more meta-blocks. One or more relationships among the original and other media is then determined. Based on the determination of the one or more relationships, topic blocks (i.e., multi-topic links) are generated and associated with the original and other media. The addition of the meta-blocks and topic blocks to the original media enables either a renderer or a service to generate one or more composite media (e.g., a video mashup) based on the navigation and analysis of media determined as a result of traversing the one or more topic blocks.

Abstract: Disclosed are an apparatus and a method for summarizing a video based on a user, the apparatus including: a gaze information collecting unit to receive gaze information of a user about video data; a memory unit to manage identification information used to identify an object that is a target of the gaze information among objects included in the video data; a control unit to recognize an object of interest to which the user pays attention using the gaze information and the identification information; and a summarizing unit to generate summary data of the video data including the recognized object of interest. According to the present invention, summary data may be generated based on a frame that a user considers important, or an object or a human present within the frame.

The web server accepts input information to control the DVR. A delayed-job server accepts input from the web server and stores a job entry corresponding to the input in a message queue. The delayed-job server processes the job entry from the message queue and creates a function request representative of the web server input. An access server accepts the function request from the delayed-job server and bi-directionally communicates messages with the DVR. The access server communicates a response to the function request back to the delayed-job server. The delayed-job server communicates data from the response to the web server, wherein the web server is not blocked while waiting for the response from the delayed-job server.

Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for providing a digital medium, such as a Digital Video Disc (DVD), enabling playback of different versions of a media presentation depending on the locality of the viewer, where each version includes embedded advertisements for a corresponding locality. In one embodiment, a DVD stores a media presentation such as, for example, a movie, an episode of a television program, or the like. Depending on the location of the viewer, the DVD provides a version of the media presentation having embedded advertisements relevant to the locality of the viewer.

Abstract: A storage medium including meta data for providing an enhanced search function on AV data supporting multi-angle, and a reproducing apparatus and method for reproducing AV data from the storage medium are provided. The storage medium comprises moving picture data for supporting multi-angle; and meta data for providing an enhanced search function on the moving picture data, wherein the meta data is defined according to scene, and comprises information regarding at least one search keyword to be applied to a corresponding scene and information regarding an angle supported by the corresponding scene. Such meta data further includes information regarding a start location and a reproduction duration time of the corresponding scene. As a result, an enhanced search function can be realized according to scene, character, actor, or search criterion which a producer arbitrary defines, with respect to moving picture data supporting multi-angle.

Abstract: A mechanism that enables authoring of new optical disc physical media (e.g., HD-DVD) while maintaining backwards compatibility with previous physical media (e.g., DVD-ROM, DVD-Video). The system eliminates film system “switching” and avoids adding new commands to the command specification, while still allowing legacy (e.g., DVD-ROM) drives to use of the content on the legacy layer. The mechanism enables seamless use of any layer should the drive be able to recognize it. The system can employ a single logical block address (LBA) range together with the concept of “sessions” to effect backwards compatibility. As well, logical overwrite techniques can also be employed to accomplish seamless backwards compatibility.

Abstract: A predictive personal video recorder (PVR) can include a tuner, a buffer, a predictive tuner, and a predictive buffer. The tuner can be configured to allow viewing of a currently-selected digital video channel chosen from a plurality of digital video channels received by a predictive PVR. The buffer can be configured to store video data of the currently-selected digital video channel, allowing time-shifted viewing of the currently-selected digital video channel. The predictive tuner can be configured to capture video data for a predicted digital video channel. The predicted digital video channel can be selected based upon a predictive factor. The predictive buffer can be configured to store the captured video data for the predicted digital video channel received by the predictive tuner to allow time-shifted viewing of said predicted digital video channel.

Abstract: A method for editing timed and annotated data includes acquiring a multimedia data stream; performing a decoding operation upon the multimedia data stream, wherein the decoded data stream comprises a textual data stream; synchronizing the multimedia data stream and the decoded data stream by performing a time stamping operation upon the data streams; editing the decoded data stream; and realigning the time stamp data of the edited decoded data stream in order to synchronize the edited decoded data with the multimedia data stream.

Between an adjacent pair of the plurality of extended extents, at least two each of the plurality of the main-view extents and the plurality of the sub-view extents are placed in a continuous, interleaved arrangement.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a method includes storing a caption file including a set of visual representations of captions for a media program and a video file including video information for the media program. A server receives a request for the media program where the request is associated with a user device. The method determines the caption file and the video file for the media program based on the request. The server then sends visual representations of the captions from the caption file out of band with video information from the video file over a network to the user device. The user device is configured to overlay a visual representation of a caption over a portion of the video information.

Abstract: A data reading device includes a reading means for reading video data recorded in a video processing device which records and plays back video data and a control means for controlling the reading means so as to read video data from the video processing device by transmitting a reading request of index data to a video writing device which writes the video data to the video processing device when video data whose index data indicating an address of the video data is not recorded in the video processing device from the video processing device, and by designating the address indicated by the index data transmitted from the video writing device.

Abstract: A method for displaying a record in an initial driving state of a record displaying apparatus is disclosed. The method includes searching execution/non-execution file descriptors of recorded multimedia files, and extracting record files not played back, and outputting a record file alarming message when a record file not played back is extracted. The record displaying apparatus is also disclosed. Execution/non-execution file descriptors of record files are searched upon system initialization of a broadcast receiver. When there is a new record or a record not played back, a record file alarming message is output in a state of being overlaid on a broadcast signal received. Accordingly, the user can access the record file list simultaneously with viewing a broadcast, without using any additional means.
