  • Patent number: 5016769
Abstract: This relates to a conventional type of closure having a central button which is normally provided with an "up" convex state and which is movable by a vacuum within an associated container to a "down" concave state. The button, as formed, has a zero or tensile stress state with the stress state changing to a compressive stress state when the button is drawn downwardly by a vacuum within the associated container. In accordance with this invention, the button has been reformed so that it is slightly flattened and this reforming has changed the zero or tensile stress state to a compressive stress state thereby providing the button with more stored energy when it is drawn downwardly by a vacuum within an associated container. This additional stored energy provides for a greater flipping action of the button which can be utilized to operate an irreversible tamper indicating system which may be applied to the button.

  • Patent number: 4956906
Abstract: According to the invention, the surface of a blank to be shaped into a product is decorated by marking on a test blank a plurality of reference points distributed over the entire surface of the test blank which will be affected by the shaping. The test blank is then shaped into a test product and the positions of the reference points are determined. A block of decoration to be obtained on the product is formed, and the positions of the reference points on the test product are located on the block. The decoration is then converted into a plurality of pixels of each inking color, and the position of each pixel with respect to the reference points on the test product is located. A corresponding pixel position with respect to the reference points on the test blank is also determined, and a film is prepared by printing the film with each pixel of the decoration reproduced in a location corresponding to the corresponding location on the test blank. At least one blank is then decorated with the film.

Abstract: A method of forming either a metal or plastic pilferproof closure is disclosed. The closure has an end wall and an annular sidewall depending therefrom. For a metal closure, an annular ring is rolled in the sidewall so that it protrudes outwardly therefrom. The sidewall is scored adjacent to the annular ring to form a plurality of fracturable bridges which divide the sidewall into upper and lower portions. The annular ring is then compressed so as to form an annular bead which at least partially covers the bridges. The upper portion is susceptible to being deformed about the threaded neck of a container while the lower portion is adapted to be at least partially turned inward and into engagement with an annular shoulder formed on the container below its threaded neck. The annular bead serves to protect the fingers of a person who is removing the closure from coming in contact with the sharp edges of the broken bridges.

  • Patent number: 4808052
Abstract: A method of forming a container end piece from a sheet of material includes the steps of forming an inverted cup by wiping a peripheral edge of the material over a die core ring, inverting the cup by advancing a punch core into the material, thereby forming a flanged area, a central bottom area and a chuckwall interconnected thereto by a radiused portion. The radiused portion is initially formed by an annular nose on the punch core larger than the final radius. The punch core is then retracted and exerts force on the flanged area to shorten the chuckwall and reduce the radius by forcing the material in the chuckwall and radiused areas into the space between a die core and die core ring. A modified method includes supporting and aligning the radiused area with a contoured knockout sleeve between the die core and die core ring.

  • Patent number: 4796772
Abstract: A metal closure for beverage containers of the type having a center panel, a center-panel ring, an inner leg, and a pull-tab opener, includes circumferential variegations for increasing the buckling pressure of the container. The circumferential variegations are cold-worked or coined into the center-panel ring and/or into portions of the closure that are adjacent to the center-panel ring. The circumferential variegations include coined surfaces with variegated lengths, variegated coin angles, variegated coin residuals, variegated spaces between coined surfaces, or variegated widths of the center panel. The circumferential variegations achieve non-axisymmetric doming of the metal closure and increase the buckling pressure of the closure by obviating excess metal in the center panel that typically results from scorning the center panel for the easy open end.

  • Patent number: 4704887
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a novel shell such as used in the manufacture of can ends, and to a method and tools for making such a shell. A non-circular blank having rounded corners is cut from thin metal. The blank is oblong in a direction transverse to the grain of the metal. A first set of tools separates the blanks and forms a substantially flat central panel and an upward-extending chuck wall about the edge of the panel to produce a partially formed shell. The junction area between said panel and said chuck wall has a relatively large radius of curvature at this time. A second set of tools forms in the blank a lip extending outward from the upper end of the chuck wall and generally parallel to said panel; then the panel and the chuck wall are separately gripped, followed by relative movement between the panel and the chuck wall while wrapping the junction area around a forming punch to form a panel wall in said junction area extending upward from the inner part of said chuck wall.

  • Patent number: RE33217
Abstract: The present invention relates to improvements in the strength of ends used on metal beverage containers.Such ends generally comprise a central panel portion of a substantially planer character, a surrounding U-shaped sidewall having inner and outer legs, a curved intermediate portion integrally joining the inner leg to the U-shaped sidewall, and a peripheral curl extending from the outer leg for double seaming the end onto a can body.In accordance with the present invention, the intermediate portion and adjacent central panel portion are firmly supported by a die while a clamping force is placed on an annular band of the upper surface of the end at the intermediate portion. The clamping force is increased until metal flows inwardly and outwardly from the contact point resulting in a free compression doming of the center panel and an outward deflection of the inner leg.
