Abstract: A rapid prototyping and manufacturing (e.g. stereolithography) method and apparatus for making three-dimensional objects on a layer-by-layer basis by selectively exposing layers of material to prescribed synergistic stimulation including forming portions of a lamina using a first exposure, allowing a time delay, and then applying a second exposure. The time delay is sufficient to allow shrinkage of the material to occur that results from the first exposure. It is preferred that the solidified portion resulting from the first exposure does not adhere to the previously formed lamina. It is also preferred that the portion solidified by this first exposure does not adhere to any boundary region that may have been exposed and adhered to the previously formed lamina. The time delay associated with a given cross-sectional region may be occupied by exposing other cross-sectional regions. The delay may occur between two exposures of overlaying hatch or fill vectors.

The manufacturing path of the machine is a series of stations which are mechanical devices for carrying out the manufacturing steps necessary to produce tubes from thermoplastic blank sleeves. The stations of the manufacturing path are modular so that they may be removed, added or rearranged; may be optionally connected to a process logic controller and may optionally have sensors for information feedback to the PLC device.

Abstract: A method of expanding a tube of plastics material in which a longitudinally travelling tube is progressively diametrically expanded in internal fluid pressure in an expansion zone between an upstream plug and an expandable downstream plug. Expansion of the tube is controlled in response to parameters which directly or indirectly indicate variation in the relative velocity at which material is delivered to and removed from the expansion zone, such as detecting upstream velocity, early expansion diameter, axial force on a sizing device or the tube diameter just before the expansion zone.

  • Patent number: 6143214
Abstract: A mixing and dispensing system for reactively combining organic chemical components to produce a rapidly polymerizing material for use in molding and encapsulating small and usually delicate devices, such as electronic components. The system uses a novel mix head incorporating a high speed rotary mixer having magnetic coupling for mixing and injecting relatively low viscosity polymerizing materials into a mold. The chemical feed to the mix head is from special chemical handling equipment. The design of the system eliminates the need for material control valves and enables relatively low feed line pressures. A novel chemical handling subsystem uses special tubular containers provided by the chemical material manufacturers that mount on specially designed dispensing equipment, and do not require special storage, handling, or mixing by trained personnel.

Abstract: An extrusion system utilizes single or tandem extruders and a mixer-cooler to extrude a foamable extrudate through a die in a sealable chamber. The foamable extrudate is shaped and calibrated within the chamber. The die is mounted on the end of a gel tube projecting through a gland seal in a fixed bulkhead forming the upstream end of the chamber. The gel tube and mixer-cooler are mounted on a movable carriage, movement of which may be used to adjust the die with respect to shaping and calibrating equipment inside the chamber. The mixer-cooler achieves a selected narrow range of uniform viscosity of the melt at the die depending on the size of the product and density. The chamber is preferably a vacuum chamber producing low density foams. The product exits the chamber to atmosphere on a continuous basis through a submerged orifice in a water baffle immersion seal.

Abstract: Cure of the binder used to produce a lignocellulosic composite material in a press is monitored by (1) inserting a transmitter probe and a receiver probe into the composite-forming mixture at parallel points; (2) passing an ultrasonic signal from the transmitter probe through the composite-forming mixture to the receiver probe; (3) measuring the pulse velocity of the ultrasonic signal; and (4) comparing the measured pulse velocity to that of a standard (i.e., velocity of pulse through a composite article in which the binder is completely cured). When the measured velocity and the velocity of the standard are equal, the composite article is removed from the press. • Patent number: 6065949
Abstract: A system and method for positioning voids in a medium. A chamber contains e medium, such as a solidifying liquid material, while a source of bubbles disposed at one side of the chamber introduces the bubbles into the chamber. Two or more acoustic wave transmitting devices disposed at respective ones of the sides of the chamber generate and transmit acoustic energy waves at respective frequencies which interact and cooperate to produce a standing wave field in an acoustically active region within the chamber. The standing wave field manipulates the bubbles into a matrix of bubbles having a predetermined spacing. By reducing the temperature of the chamber during the positioning and sizing of the bubbles in a desired pattern within the medium, the medium will be solidified so as to form a solid article with imbedded ordered voids. After solidifying the medium, by increasing the temperature of the sides of the chamber so as to melt the boundary of the solid article, the article will be separated from the chamber.
