Patent number: 5087484Abstract: This invention is an apparatus and method for applying sealant to a countersunk fastener hole. The apparatus comprises a sleeve, an adapter tube within the sleeve, a nozzle housing attached to the adapter tube, and a tip within the nozzle housing. A guide pin is attached to the adapter tube and follows an oblique slot in the sleeve. To operate, the sealant applicator is inserted into a countersunk fastener hole, engaging the tip with the countersink of the hole. The tip depresses into the nozzle housing, ejecting sealant onto the countersink. The adapter tube is pushed into the sleeve, moving the guide pin along the oblique slot in the sleeve. This guide pin movement rotates the adapter tube, nozzle housing and tip, causing the tip to uniformly spread the sealant around the countersink.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 1990Date of Patent: February 11, 1992Assignee: McDonnell Douglas CorporationInventor: William R. Patent number: 5079595Abstract: A method for manufacturing an organic semiconductor thin film (24) having an improved characteristic as a semiconductor is provided. A phthalocyanine compound having amino groups is mixed with stearic acid to form a bonded substance capable of being dissolved in an organic solvent. Then, an organic solution is made by dissolving this bonded substance in the organic solvent. By developing this organic solution on a water (20) surface, the thin layer (23) of this bonded substance is formed on the water (20) surface. Thereafter, this thin layer is moved onto a substrate (30) and accumulated to be deposited on the substrate (30). Next, the stearic acid is volatilized and removed from the above described thin film (23) deposited on the substrate (30) by baking the whole substrate. The thus structured organic semiconductor thin film (24) is used as a semiconductor material such as a photoelectric transfer device, a gas sensor, a transistor and the like.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 1989Date of Patent: January 7, 1992Assignee: Mitsubishi Denki Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Shoji Suzuki, Hideo Saeki

Patent number: 4792462Abstract: A method of applying solventless varnish to stator windings in electrical machinery. A magnetic core having a plurality of stator windings disposed in the slots of the core is positioned above a tank containing a solventless varnish, and the tank is then raised to immerse the end turns of the windings on one end of the core into the varnish. The windings are energized to heat them and the varnish which adheres to the end turns to reduce the viscosity of the varnish. The tank is then lowered and the stator and windings are inverted so that a portion of the reduced viscosity varnish which adheres to the end turns flows downwardly through the slots of the stator. This is repeated until varnish begins to flow freely through the slots to the other end, thereby indicating that good coating of the winding within the slots has been accomplished.Type: GrantFiled: November 26, 1985Date of Patent: December 20, 1988Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: William R. Patent number: 4759949Abstract: Disclosed is a method of insulating ferromagnetic amorphous metal strip by coating the strip with a composition of about 3 to about 32% of a metal alkoxide having a general formula of M(OR).sub.n, where M is an alkoxide forming metal, R is alkyl, and n is the valence of the M, about 56 to about 96% of a solvent for the metal alkoxide, about 1 to about 12% water, and about 0.001 to about 0.01% of an acid. The coated strip is heated at a temperature above the temperature at which the metal alkoxide hydrolizes and polymerizes and the water and solvent evaporate, and below the temperature at which the amorphous metal crystallizes. Also disclosed is ferromagnetic amorphous metal strip insulated with a coating of glass that is about 0.001 to about 0.02 mils thick.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1987Date of Patent: July 26, 1988Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Norman M. Patent number: 4748055Abstract: Self-healing coatings are formed by first phosphating or nitriding ferrous parts, then coating with an emulsion of e.g. polysiloxane, oil, sorbitan derivative and sodium sulfonate, butyl cellosolve, oleic acid. Preferred phosphating is to a thickness of 2,000-3,000 mg Zn phosphate/square foot. This coating passes 240-plus hours in 5% salt spray (ASTM B-117) and resists wash off with car wash soap.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 1986Date of Patent: May 31, 1988Assignee: Ashland Oil, Inc.Inventors: Perry E. Patent number: 4745012Abstract: The present invention is directed to improved conductive primer composition and methods. In the improved methods aspect of the present invention, a non-conductive polymeric component is precoated with a primer to render it electroconductive in preparation for electrocoating. Next, the primed polymeric component is assembled with a conductive matallic component to form a multi-material workpiece. Finally, the formed workpiece is submerged in an electrocoat bath for simultaneously electrocoating both the primed polymeric component and the conductive metallic component. In some preferred embodiments, the workpiece may be an automobile chassis. In the improved electroconductive primer compositions aspect of the present invention, such compositions comprise a dispersion of approximately 70% to 90% of a polymeric resinous binder which will cure to form a film, approximately 10% to 30% of a conductive carbon pigment, approximately 0.2 to 0.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 1986Date of Patent: May 17, 1988Assignee: William C. Patent number: 4740389Abstract: This invention relates to a composition and method for producing a surface layer with a high specific surface on iron, aluminum, zinc, and on technical alloys of these metals. The composition provides an adhesive layer that may be subsequently used to securely bind other materials, and organic materials in particular, to the surface of the metal or alloy. The composition may be applied by spraying under pressure, by dipping, or as a paste at ambient temperatures. The composition is predominantly amorphous, and provides a uniform, stable, and economical method of priming metals for the reception of a final outer coating.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1985Date of Patent: April 26, 1988Assignee: Statni Vyzkmoy Ustav Ochrany Materialu G.V.
