Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing handover between carriers of different duplex frequency separation distances is provided. A mobile terminal is configured to operate in both fixed and variable duplex. The ability operate with unpaired up-link and down-link frequency carrier pairs, when necessary, makes it possible to significantly increase the spectrum utilization (capacity) in a cellular system using asymmetric up-link and down-link for example in WCDMA systems.

Abstract: A system and method for establishing ad hoc communication sessions between remote communication terminals is disclosed. A base station transmits a beacon signal including information about the identity and system clock of the base station. Remote terminals within range lock to the base station, synchronizing their system clocks with the base station's clock and setting their hop sequence and hop sequence phase based on information in the beacon signal. To establish an ad hoc communication session, a master terminal first establishes a link to the base station, which establishes a link to a desired slave terminal. The base terminal exchanges information between remote terminals that enables the master terminal to establish a direct communication session with a slave terminal.

Abstract: In idle handover control, the reception quality of a synchronized pilot channel is classified into quality class “1” with which data can be received without any error, quality class “2” with which data can be received within an allowable error range, or quality class “3” with which data is difficult to receive with high quality, and different thresholds, i.e., 6 dB, 4 dB, and 2 dB, are respectively set for these quality classes. It is checked whether the reception quality of another pilot channel as a synchronization establishment candidate is higher than that of the synchronized pilot channel by a threshold corresponding to a quality class into which the synchronized pilot channel is classified or more. If it is determined that the reception quality of the synchronization establishment candidate is higher by the threshold or more, handover processing is performed. Otherwise, synchronization with the synchronized pilot channel is maintained without handover processing.

More particularly, the system includes an extension protocol for extending a point to point radio link between a primary station and a secondary station to a point to multipoint radio link in which the primary station broadcasts to the secondary stations. This is done by first informing the handset to which a point to point radio link has been set up that an extension is to be done so that the handset can switch off its transmitter, and then transmitting extension messages to all handsets. Furthermore, a transfer and skipping protocols are proposed with a reliable connection establishment by using a double checking protocol for seizing a pair of free channels.

  • Patent number: 6405048
Abstract: A system and a method to automatically select a frequency set in a low-tier radio communication system, sharing frequencies with an overlapping high-tier cellular radio system, that minimally interferes with the high-tier system employing frequency hopping is described. The present invention makes use of the broadcast information that is transmitted by the high-tier radio base stations on their broadcast control channels (BCCH), which contains not only the BCCH carrier frequencies of surrounding cells, but also information regarding the frequencies applied in the considered cell for frequency hopping traffic channels. With this broadcast information, the low-tier system can derive the frequency planning of the high-tier system, and can then derive a frequency set for low-tier usage that minimally interferes with the overlapping high-tier system.

Abstract: In the mobile communication system in the multi-carrier CDMA scheme, data to be transmitted by the radio base station are doubly spread by using a long code that is unique to each radio base station and to be used in identifying each radio base station, in addition to a short code to be used in identifying each mobile station. The long code has a repetition period longer than or equal to the number of sub-carriers used for transmission.

  • Patent number: 6377811
Abstract: A system and method is provided to permit a mobile phone the options of line-selection and direct station selection (DSS). When the wireless system is interfaced to a land-line system through a limited number of lines, dual-function keys select and capture available outside lines. Other dual-function keys permit other mobile stations in the system to be accessed through a single keystroke. A field of indicators associated with these keys signals the availability of these lines and stations. These line-select/DSS keys are also useable to dial telephone numbers in the traditional method. The virtual line-select concept is also applicable to select land-lines and wireless channels in a group distributed network. Likewise, the virtual DSS function is applicable to monitor and access a select group of mobile stations in the group-distribution system.

Abstract: A method for practical QoS routing, which provides a solution to the delay constrained least cost routing problem, is presented. The method uses the concept of aggregated costs and finds the optimal multiplier based on Lagrange relaxation. The method is polynomial in running time, and produces a theoretical lower bound (i.e. optimal solution), along with the result. The differences between the lower bound and result are small, indicating the quality of the result. Additionally, by further relaxing the desire for an optimal solution, an option is provided to control the trade-off between running time of the algorithm and quality of the result.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for arranging transmission of overhead messages on the paging channel of a wireless communications system is described. Certain paging channel slots are established, based on a timing reference, that must contain an overhead message. In the intervening slots or slot fragments, the base station transmits mobile-directed messages, when they are available. When no mobile directed messages are available for transmission, the base station selects an overhead message from a queue for transmission on the intervening paging channel slot or slot fragment.

  • Patent number: 6360103
Abstract: A wireless communication system, such as a cellular communication system prioritizes calls to have a low, regular or high priority. The communication channels provided by a base station are divided into regular channels and reserved channels. All calls are connected on regular channels until the regular channels are all full. When the regular channels are all full, then regular priority calls are connected as low priority calls or not at all. If a regular priority call is connected as a low priority call it is connected via a reserved channel. Once all the reserved channels are full, then a high priority call is attempted to be connected by dropping a low priority call and using the reserved channel that the low priority call was using.

  • Patent number: 6356759
Abstract: In a packet radio system (e.g. a GPRS), a network (BSS) has two different alternatives for allocating a radio resource to a mobile station (MS). In a first allocation alternative the radio resource is allocated using an uplink counter block identifier (USF) transmitted with downlink blocks. In a second allocation alternative the radio resource is allocated in a separate signalling message. A corresponding downlink block then also has an uplink counter block identifier (USF) which can acquire only a limited number of possible values. If all identifiers (USF) are allocated to different mobile stations, allocation alternative 2 cannot be used. In the invention the network leaves at least one identifier (USF) unallocated to any mobile station.
