Channel Selection Or Allocation Patents (Class 455/464)
  • Patent number: 6029071
Abstract: A cordless telephone system achieves synchronism for each one of multiple portable units to the same communication channel for communicating with a common base unit. The cordless system uses a dual channel process to allow both the freedom to dynamically change channels as needed to avoid interference while simultaneously providing a capability to resynchronize any portable unit with the base unit on a selected active channel. This is achieved through the use of a fixed service channel and an active channel which changes as needed. If a channel change is made during a call, after the call is completed, the base unit returns to the previous active channel and broadcasts a message to the multiple portable units indicative of the new active channel. Also, any portable unit that attempts to communicate with the base unit on the wrong channel and fails to get a response will transmit a message on the fixed service channel requesting the current active channel from the base unit.

  • Patent number: 6002939
Abstract: A cordless telephone with no control channels which makes connection possible even when the handset or the base unit is within the area of another cordless telephone. When effecting connection between the handset and base unit through a pair of communication channels, connection request data is transmitted from one to the other of the handset and base unit by using one of a pair of communication channels paired with the other which is available as seen from the transmitting side. From the other side, on which the communication request data is received, data indicating whether the communication channel through which the connection request data has been transmitted is busy or not is sent. The transmission of connection request data is repeated through different communication channels until the data sent back indicates an available channel. When the data sent back indicates an available channel, connection is effected from then on between the handset and base unit through this available pair of channels.

  • Patent number: 5983090
Abstract: In a mobile communication system, when a mobile station (PS1 to PSj) makes a request for connection to a service provider (SP), a base station (BS1 to BSn) acquires an IP address "IP1" assigned for the base stations and assigns to the requesting mobile station an IP address "IP2" for the mobile stations that has been acquired in advance in place of the IP address "IP1". When data transfer is started, the base station changes the source address in data sent by the mobile station from "IP2" to "IP1" and then transfers the resulting data to the service provider. On the other hand, the base station changes the destination address of data sent by the service provider from "IP1" for the base stations to "IP2" for the mobile stations for subsequent transfer to the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 5966665
Abstract: A wireless communication system capable of communicating by a frequency hopping method, having a base unit that can be connected to an external telephone circuit and multiple handsets that can communicate wirelessly with the base unit. The system generates predetermined hop frequency data In sequence, which is used to transmit and receive signals. The base unit transmits control signals to all the handsets at predetermined intervals, while the handsets transmit control signals to the base unit one by one at predetermined intervals. In this way, the exchange of control signals between the base unit and multiple handsets can be performed more quickly than when the base unit sends control signals to each handset one by one in order to match the individual receiving frequencies of those handsets.

Abstract: The invention provides a communication unit (MS1), communicating with a first radio base station (BTS1) on a dedicated communication channel (CH1) in a radio communication network (NET1) using a combination of TDMA and FDMA, with an increased flexibility in terms of when the communication unit (MS1) can receive signals from a second base station (BTS4). The increased flexibility is achieved by the communication unit (MS1) selecting some of the time slots comprising the dedicated communication channel (CH1) and ignoring to communicate with the first radio base station in these selected time slots and instead using them to receive signals (BCCH4) from the second radio base station (BTS4). In a GSM mobile station (MS1) according to the invention, the "stolen" time slots are used for identification of a neighboring base tranceiver station (BTS4), i.e.

  • Patent number: 5926755
Abstract: In a radio communication system including at least one radio base station and at least two telephones connected to a radio terminal, simultaneous multiple calls may be set up between the radio base station and the radio terminal. An adaptor connects the telephones to the radio terminal that is connected over a radio air-interface to the radio base station. For an outgoing call originating from one of the telephones, the adaptor senses when a particular telephone goes off-hook and signals this information to the radio base station via the radio terminal and a control channel of the radio air-interface. Then, a first traffic channel is set up between the radio base station and the radio terminal. The telephone that has gone off-hook is connected to the established traffic channel via an adaptor. Once a first traffic channel is established for a first call, signalling that a second call is to be set up may be transmitted across the first traffic channel without terminating the first call.

  • Patent number: 5870678
Abstract: A cordless telephone is composed of a base unit connected to a telephone line and a handset unit capable of radio communications with the base unit. When the handset unit or the base unit initially transmits radio waves for forming a radio link, a channel is selected from a group of channels through which transmission is permitted irrespective of their electric field states, and the radio waves are transmitted through the selected channel. After the radio link has been formed, a speech channel is selected from all channels through which transmission is permitted. In this way, when the base unit or the handset unit initially transmits control data, the transmission is immediately carried out irrespective of an electric field state on the selected channel, whereby the radio link can be established in a reduced time. Further, when a speech communication is started, 15 channels additionally provided by the revised standard can be effectively utilized.

Abstract: A channel assignment system allocates channels to various cells by the optimal partitioning of the available radio frequencies into non-overlapping sets, the optimal grouping of co-user cells, and the best allocation of the former to the latter. Maximization of traffic handling capacity is, for one embodiment, expressed as the maximization of a bottleneck capacity ratio, known as the capacity factor. The capacity ratio for a cell is defined as the ratio of the number of radio frequencies allocated to the cell over the number of radio frequencies needed to meet blocking probability requirements. Given a channel allocation, the latter is fixed once the traffic loads and desired blocking are specified. The solution to attain an optimal non-regular channel assignment is decomposed into two mathematical programs designated a Master Program and a Subprogram. These are solved iteratively with assistance from a channel set augmentation technique implemented between solutions of the Master and Subprogram.
