  • Patent number: 9580560
Abstract: The disclosure is directed to polymer ligands that are optimally suited for surface-functionalizing magnetic nanoparticles. The amphiphilic polymers are prepared by coupling several amine-terminated anchoring groups, polyethylene glycol moieties, and reactive groups onto a poly(isobutylene-alt-maleic anhydride) (PIMA) chain. The reaction of maleic anhydride groups with amine-containing molecules is highly-efficient and occurs in one-step. The availability of several dopamine groups in the same ligand greatly enhances the ligand affinity, via multiple-coordination, to the magnetic NPs, while the hydrophilic and reactive groups promote colloidal stability in buffer media and allow subsequent conjugation with target biomolecules. Nanoparticles ligated with terminally reactive polymers have been easily coupled to target dyes and tested in live cell imaging with no measurable cytotoxicity.

  • Patent number: 8883876
Abstract: The subject matter of the invention is a radically polymerizable dental material comprising at least two components. A first component of the dental material contains the salt of a CH-acidic compound, and an additional component contains an acid with acidity greater than that of the CH-acidic compound of the first component. Both components contain radically polymerizable monomers. When the two components are mixed, the acid of the second component converts the salt of the CH-acidic compound of the first component into a CH-acidic molecule, and the CH-acidic molecule triggers the radical polymerization of the monomers. In addition to the advantages of CH-acidic compounds in dental materials on the basis of a reactive resin, the invention achieves long-term storage stability as a result of an increase in the proportion of the reactive resin matrix in polymerizable dental materials.

Abstract: The invention provides methods for inducing reversible chain cleavage of polymer chains in a crosslinked polymeric material or during polymerization of a polymeric material. Reversible cleavage of the polymer backbone is capable of relieving stress in the polymeric material as the bonds reform in a less stressed state. The invention also provides mixtures for making crosslinked polymeric materials, methods for making polymeric materials capable of reversible chain cleavage, materials made by the methods of the invention, and linear monomers containing reversible chain cleavage groups which are useful in the materials and methods of the invention. The mixtures of the invention may be dental restorative compositions used for forming dental restorative materials.

Abstract: Compositions of P4HB with high purity have been developed. The compositions are prepared by washing P4HB biomass prior to solvent extraction, and precipitating P4HB from solution. The same solvent is preferably used to wash the P4HB biomass, and as a non-solvent to precipitate the polymer from a P4HB solvent solution. The highly pure P4HB compositions are suitable for preparing implants. The implants may be used for the repair of soft and hard tissues.

Abstract: A bone cement is provided that includes a solid component and a liquid component. The solid component and liquid component are mixed together to form the bone cement. After completion of the solid and liquid component mixing, the bone cement has an initial viscosity effective for manual application or manual injection onto or into a targeted anatomical location, e.g., bone, and the cement has stable viscosity range that over both time and temperature is effective for uniformly filling the targeted anatomical location, for example an osteoporotic bone or a fractured vertebral body, with minimal to no leakage of the cement from the targeted anatomical location. Additionally, both the initial viscosity and the stable viscosity of the bone cement are within a range that renders the bone cement effective for injection with a manually operated syringe or multiple syringes.
