    Abstract: A pressure-sensitive overfill protection system for a refillable drug delivery device includes a collapsible link which, in a preferred embodiment, comprises an aneroid having an internal volume of gas at a reference pressure. The collapsible link, in its expanded state, supports on inlet valve in an open position to permit the ingress of new drug fluid into a bellows reservoir. The external surface of the aneroid is exposed to the bellows pressure. When the bellows pressure exceeds the reference pressure, the aneroid collapses and permits the inlet valve to move to a closed position under a biasing force provided by a spring. Further flow of new drug fluid into the drug delivery device is thereby prevented. Moreover, the closure of the valve provides a large increase in pressure is experienced in the refill device and may therefore be sensed by a clinician. Because the overfill protection system is pressure sensitive, it may be used with different sized bellows without modification.

    Abstract: A PCA device includes a fluid conduit having an upstream portion and a downstream portion, a first flow-restricting orifice in the upstream portion, a second flow-restricting orifice in the downstream portion, a pressure-responsive check valve in the downstream portion in parallel with the second flow-restricting orifice, and a bolus dose delivery mechanism including a chamber in fluid communication between the upstream portion and the downstream portion. Continuous flow is provided through the first flow-restricting orifice, the chamber, and the second flow-restrictive orifice, the continuous flow serving to fill the chamber at a controlled rate through the first flow-restrictive orifice. The bolus dose delivery mechanism is manually actuable to express the contents of the chamber through the check valve to supplement the continuous flow through the downstream portion. The bolus dose delivery mechanism includes a resilient diaphragm that forms a sealed closure for the chamber.

The fluid ejection parameters are controlled by an electronic set comprising a precision potentiometer attached to the motor-driven shaft, linked to a microprocessor-based electronic circuitry and a programming set formed by a series of buttons for entering the required ejection parameters, such as fluid flow rate, pressure, ejected volume, etc. The parameters are visualized in a liquid-crystal display.

A transformable fluid reservoir having a fluid delivery portion is disposed in the first compartment. If the gas generated in the electrochemical cell portion is introduced into the second compartment, the inner pressure of the second compartment increases, and the partition member is pushed, so that a fluid in the fluid reservoir disposed in the first compartment is delivered from the fluid delivery portion.
