Abstract: A system and method for evaluating the integrity of a set of electronically stored files that contain hypertext links or other types of file references. The set of files may be received in compressed or uncompressed form. An integrity evaluator evaluates each file in the set of files for one or more integrity conditions or violations. The integrity evaluator may determine whether any of the files include no references to other files, or are not referenced by any other files. The integrity evaluator may also test for broken references, references employing absolute path names, invalid symbols within references, and other conditions. A report module issues a report regarding the integrity of the files and their references.

Abstract: A system, apparatus and method are provided that enable the receipt of answers to questions from users and to make those answers persistent within a generalized database schema. A set of one or more middleware entities and components are provided to process the user's answers that are submitted to the system. The middleware entities differentiate one user from another user by use of a session. Different sets of questions are grouped into encounters, and the answers to the questions for a particular encounter are given a unique identifier. The unique identifier can be used to identify the user and/or the particular encounter. The answers to the questions can be retrieved and viewed in numerous ways, such as by user, by encounter, by question, by question type, by answer, by answer type, etc. The selection of database schema and the structure of the middleware enables the system to handle any answer to any question without requiring the restructuring of the database or database schema.

Abstract: Methods and systems for comparing configurations of a storage area network are disclosed. A first configuration file and a second configuration file, each representing the configuration of a storage area network, are imported into a first configuration tree and a second configuration tree. An unordered comparison is then performed on the configuration trees. The unordered comparison produces a difference file that identifies changes in the configurations of the storage area networks. The configuration trees may be each processed into comparison trees before the unordered comparison is performed. The unordered comparison may produce two results files, one corresponding to the first comparison tree and the other corresponding to the second comparison tree; these may be combined to create the difference file. The identified changes in the difference file or in the results files may then be reported to a storage area network manager or administrator.

Abstract: The present invention represents header and footer structures in a markup language (ML) document. The ML document may be parsed by applications that understand ML other than the application that generated the ML document. The ML document may be manipulated on a server or anywhere even when the application creating the ML document is not present. The header or footer originally used in the ML document may be manipulated when the ML document is parsed by other applications. Header and footer information (i.e., properties) are saved in a markup language (ML) document without data loss, while allowing the header and footer structures to be parsed by ML-aware applications and to be read by ML programmers.

Abstract: Methods and systems provide for automatically diagramming a web site and associated web pages and links based on interactive navigation and selection performed by a user. Through interactive hyperlink selection and diagramming, a web site diagram is constructed that is based upon the web pages and links selected by a user while the user is traversing or navigating the web site starting at any given point within the web site. The diagram may be prepared so that only user-selected web pages and/or links are mapped and diagrammed, or all web pages and/or links at any traversed discovery level of the web site may be mapped and diagrammed. One automatically mapped portion of a selected website may be “bridged” to a second automatically mapped portion of the selected website, where user input allows for selection of the different portions of the web site to be automatically mapped.

Abstract: The present invention is a system and method for computer optimization of content and reusing documents. The invention provides integrated user interfaces to facilitate reuse of static or dynamic content. The system further includes on a display, a first window and a second window where the system includes programming instructions operable to control the processing unit to output to the first window the content of memory. The content output to the first window is simultaneous to output being displayed in the second window of the separate program. Each of these programs may reside in the same memory space or different memory space. The separate program can provide documents or content to be used in the first window. The system further includes programming instructions operable to transform selections retrieved from documents of the second window into content for the first window.

Abstract: A system includes server and client computers communicating over a network. The server includes a database of websites. A user logs into one of the client computers and is presented with a stand-alone application for organizing and accessing websites that is separate from a web-browser. The application presents the alphabet to the user and allows the user to select one or more letters of the alphabet. When a letter is selected, the application presents a list of websites to the user and allows the user to select a website. The web address of the selected website is then sent to the web-browser for display of the webpage. The application also presents advertisements to the user that are not blocked by ad blocking programs.

Abstract: A method for displaying cached webpages related to bookmarks in a browser program. Displayed along with selected bookmarks in the bookmark menu is a numeral indicating the present total number of cached webpages associated with the bookmarks. When the user selects the numeral, a number count menu is displayed allowing the user to select a cache-count number indicating the desired number of cached webpages to display. Upon selection of the cache-count number, the corresponding number of webpages are displayed in reduced resolution. These webpages may then be further selected by the user to requery or renavigate to the webpages.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method of bookmarking syndicated feeds. The method can include receiving a request to bookmark a first network resource and determining whether at least one syndicated feed is associated with the first network resource. When at least one syndicated feed is associated with the first network resource, the syndicated feed can be identified to a user and the user can be prompted to indicate whether to bookmark the syndicated feed. Responsive to receiving an indication from the user to bookmark the syndicated feed, a bookmark can be generated for the syndicated feed and the syndicated feed bookmark can be output.

Abstract: To facilitate the use of audio files for annotation purposes, an audio file format, which includes audio data for playback purposes, is augmented with a parallel data channel of line identifiers, or with a map associating time codes for the audio data with line numbers on the original document. The line number-time code information in the audio file is used to navigate within the audio file, and also to associate bookmark links and captured audio annotation files with line numbers of the original text document. An annotation device may provide an output document wherein links to audio and/or text annotation files are embedded at corresponding line numbers. Also, a navigation index may be generated, having links to annotation files and associated document line numbers, as well as bookmark links to selected document line numbers.

Abstract: “Smart bookmarks” are described which facilitate aggregation, sharing, and dynamic access to the content in which a particular user has an interest.

Abstract: A method and system are described for simulating a dynamic link between electronic documents located in a computer network. In accordance with exemplary embodiments of the present invention, a first dynamic link is selected that leads from a first electronic document to a second electronic document. The position of the first dynamic link is located within a first set of instructions used to render the first electronic document. A navigation point associated with the first dynamic link is identified in the first set of instructions. The navigation point is then stored.

Abstract: A word processor including a native XML file format is provided. The well formed XML file fully represents the word-processor document, and fully supports 100% of word-processor's rich formatting. There are no feature losses when saving the word-processor documents as XML. A published XSD file defines all the rules behind the word-processor's XML file format. Hints may be provided within the XML associated files providing applications that understand XML a shortcut to understanding some of the features provided by the word-processor. The word-processing document is stored in a single XML file. Additionally, manipulation of word-processing documents may be done on computing devices that do not include the word-processor itself.

Abstract: A method, system and apparatus for highlighting Web pages on a server that the user has already bookmarked is provided. When a user accesses a server, an application program compares the URLs of all the Web pages bookmarked in the user's bookmark folder with URLs of Web pages on the server. All the Web pages on the server having a common URL with the Web pages bookmarked are then highlighted.

Abstract: An custom page server is provided with user preferences organized into templates stored in compact data structures and the live data used to fill the templates stored local to the page server which is handing user requests for custom pages. One process is executed on the page server for every request. The process is provided a user template for the user making the request, where the user template is either generated from user preferences or retrieved from a cache of recently used user templates. Each user process is provided access to a large region of shared memory which contains all of the live data needed to fill any user template. Typically, the pages served are news pages, giving the user a custom selection of stock quotes, news headlines, sports scores, weather, and the like. With the live data stored in a local, shared memory, any custom page can be built within the page server, eliminating the need to make requests from other servers for portions of the live data.

Abstract: An information retrieval system includes a query revision architecture that integrates multiple different query revisers, each implementing one or more query revision strategies. A revision server receives a user's query, and interfaces with the various query revisers, each of which generates one or more potential revised queries. The revision server evaluates the potential revised queries, and selects one or more of them to provide to the user.

Abstract: A system and computer implemented method for providing a widget are described. The method and system include rendering the widget on a site. The widget dynamically displays multimedia content associated with a campaign. The widget is also embeddable, copyable, and allows for at least one user action. The method and system also include receiving at least one input related to the at least one action and updating the widget based on a goal corresponding to the at least one action.

Abstract: Users are shown how a web page has been modified from a previous version. Information related to differences between the current version of the web page and a previous version of the web page is provided in response to user-initiated activity within a predefined region of the current version of the web page. In some embodiments, when a user attempts to activate a feature of the web page at a location associated with a former location of the feature in a previous version of the page, the feature is activated, but update information related to the differences between the previous and current versions of the web page is displayed over at least a portion of the information generated by activation of the feature. In some embodiments, the user is required to perform a specific action in order to clear the display of the update information.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide systems, methods and computer program products for generating search results comprising web documents with associated expert information. One embodiment of a method for generating such search results includes receiving one or more search queries, selecting one of the one or more search queries, determining one or more categories of web documents responsive to the selected search query and crawling a web graph of linked web documents to identify one or more web documents tagged as within the one or more categories responsive to the selected search query. The method further includes generating a result set of the one or more web documents identified as within the one or more categories responsive to the selected search query, ranking the result set and generating a list of ranked search results responsive to the selected search.

Abstract: An embodiment of digital watermarks which contains literary information of interest to a reader of an electronic literary macramé (ELM) or a knowledge transfer tool (KTT). The nature of the watermark changes by the deepening of its role in the ELM/KTT, since the watermark becomes what is termed in cryptographic parlance a “side channel” for conveying narrative-related information to a reader outside the primary communications stream. If a reader removes the digital watermark from the work, the side channel containing narrative-related information is destroyed, and the literary value of the work is thereby diminished.

Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer program product are provided for customizing and consolidating bookmarks into folders in an Instant Messaging (IM) environment as well as an Internet browser. An IM GUI is provided that contains IM contacts and online information for those IM contacts, such as Web searches or bookmarks, which can be accessed by the user. Sorting of the IM contacts by a specific subject matter or category is provided as well as prioritizing of IM contacts based on subject matter expertise or frequently visited bookmarks. Searching of information contained in the IM environment as well as the Internet is also provided.

Abstract: The data processing device of the present invention comprises a print job generating unit 22 for generating a print job in PDL format (PDL job) and a print job in BMI (bitmap image) format (BMI job) for one data file to perform stock printing, a storage device 12 for storing both print jobs, and a means for sending to a printer 15 or 16 the stored print job in response to an instruction from a user.

The information is accessed by the user simply by touching with a finger items (i.e., words, letters, symbols, pictures, icons, . . . ) that are highlighted on an electronic hypertext document displayed over the physical document.

Abstract: A character service apparatus includes a character content database for storing characters and individual lists of characters purchased by each of users, a content server, connected to a data communication network, for downloading character information to terminals connected thereto, registering a purchased character in a character list of a corresponding terminal, accessing the character content database and downloading a character registered in the character list of the corresponding terminal in response to a transmission request, and a wireless terminal connected to the content server via a wireless network and the data communication network, for displaying the downloaded character information, transmitting a purchase request for the character selected by the user to the content server, transmitting a transmission request for the purchased character, and registering characters received in response to the transmission request as screen information for displaying a specific state of the wireless terminal.

Abstract: A method of linking digital text based electronically stored documents to geographical spatial maps has the steps of compiling a group of digital text documents; and providing a link creator, the link creator generates hyperlinks in the digital text documents relating to a location or a structure and connecting the generated hyperlinks to geographic features or locations in a mapping application. The method further includes the step of identifying keywords or phrases in the digital text documents; creating a direct link between the keyword or phrase and the geographical location or feature on the map application and searching a keyword or phrase in the digital text documents to create a subset of documents containing the keyword linked to a geographical feature or location. The link generator has a computer generated hyperlink creator program for generating hyperlinks in digital text documents and connecting the hyperlink to geographic features and locations in digital mapping applications.

Abstract: Methods, apparatus and computer programs are provided for characterizing Web-based information resources based on their interactions. A Web-based information resource is a single Web document or a collection of related Web documents. Unlike simple text documents, Web documents contain hyperlinks and other HTML tags. Different types of interactions, including inbound hyperlinks, outbound hyperlinks and internal links associated with a Web-based information resource, are used to characterize the Web-based information resource. A DOM tree representing the tag structure of a Web-based information resource is used to identify text items likely to be useful as context for a hyperlink anchor text, and the anchor text is combined with the context to generate a representation. The representation of Web-based information resources based on interactions can be used for clustering and classification, and in Web mining applications such as query disambiguation and automatic taxonomy generation.

Abstract: A method for updating a configuration of a websheet. A client receives a web page including the websheet from a server. The websheet includes data values stored in a relational database table. The table includes a first set of data values displayed in cells of the websheet in response to the client receiving the web page. The table also includes a second set of data values associated with the websheet configuration. Second set data values are not displayed in the websheet in response to the client receiving the web page. A form displaying the second set is received by the client. Second set data values are updated on the form to provide an updated websheet configuration. With its updated configuration, the websheet is displayed at the client and allows data entry to modify or add first set data values.

Abstract: The invention relates to computer-implemented methods and systems for providing comments within source code. For providing access management to the comments, in one aspect, the comments are stored separately from the source code, the comments are retrieved from the storage medium, and the retrieved comments are displayed with the source code. In certain aspects, filter information may be stored with one or more comments and the comments may be provided based on filter information. The filter information may be used to block a requesting user from having access to certain comments. Access authorization information may also be used to control access to the comment information.

Abstract: A method and system is provided for detecting, commanding and controlling diverse home devices currently connected to a home network. An interface is provided for accessing the home devices that are currently connected to a home network. According to the method, a device link file is generated, wherein the device link file identifies home devices that are currently connected to the home network. A device link page is created, wherein the device link page contains a device button that is associated with each home device that is identified in the device link file. A hyper-text link is associated with each device button, wherein the hyper-text link provides a link to an HTML page that is contained on the home device that is associated with the device button, and the device link page is displayed on a browser based home device.

Abstract: A method for presenting a page, having a set of links, on a data processing system is provided. The page is preprocessed to form a processed page, wherein the processed page is unpresented within the data processing system. A determination is made as to whether or not the links within the page fall within a proximity policy. Responsive to a determination that the page falls outside of the proximity policy, the page is reformatted to fall within the proximity policy. The mechanism of the present invention includes a preprocessing process and a policy structure for reformatting an electronic document page. The policy structure of the present invention allows the user to specify the appearance of the electronic document page. The policy structure as defined by the user is stored such that when the user returns to the page, the page may be displayed according to the policy structure defined by the user.

Abstract: A user interface architecture wherein user content and user interface are composed of documents with links is described. User content documents and user interface documents are both displayed in a single viewing frame. A non-linear navigation history is maintained such that a user can navigate along a first path, back up using a previous link, navigate along a second path, back up along the second path using the previous link, and re-navigate along the first path again using a next link. Every document page to which a user navigates is saved in the user's navigation history. Users can query their navigation histories and view their navigation histories in various ways. Users can access, annotate, and customize the user interface in the same manner in which users access, annotate, and modify user content documents.

Abstract: A system for accessing web-based search services. The system contains a search module, a storage device, a link extracting module, and page generating module. The search module provides, in a first browser window, a first list comprising hyperlinks to web pages that match search criteria. The storage device comprises a temporary data field temporarily storing a second list of hyperlinks. The link extracting module retrieves a hyperlink from the first list and adds it to the second list of hyperlinks. The page generating module generates, on a second browser window, a webpage corresponding to one of the hyperlinks in the second list.

Abstract: Electronic publication systems are disclosed that enable the analysis and publication of layout files, which contain an analysis strategy and embedded raw data. The published layout files can be accessed by reader applications that are able to read the layout files and modify the analysis strategy within the layout file using the embedded raw data. In many embodiments, the reader applications are unable to access the embedded raw data. In several embodiments, the reader applications prevent the saving or printing of layout files. One embodiment of the invention includes a publication computer connected to a network, a user computer connected to the network and the publication computer is configured to generate a file including an analysis strategy based on the raw data and in which the raw data is embedded.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a method for ranking webpages is provided. The method includes generating a web circuit model having a node representing each webpage. The model is simulated to identify the potential at each node. The webpages can then be ranked according to the potentials of the nodes to which the webpages correspond.

Abstract: Prominence data resulting from user interaction with a hyperlink on a page may be stored in one or more repositories. Prominence data may be collected automatically when the user views a page or clicks on a hyperlink without requiring separate action from the user to accomplish storage or retrieval. The prominence data may further include a display parameter that denotes a level of prominence that is usable to affect the display of a hyperlink. A prominence score used to determine the display parameter may be calculated by dividing a count of click-throughs by a count of page views of the page containing the hyperlink. Other score calculations may be used. User feedback may be incorporated into the score calculation and may be collected through a toolbar, popup window, or other feedback-collecting mechanism.

Abstract: A method and a system for enabling website navigation, the method comprising: providing web-page tags with capabilities for rendering specific content for each visitor to a web page/site based on the past and current behavior of the visitor; providing configurable content templates and editable content embedded in the webpage/site; and providing a real-time delivery means and a configuration means for the real-time delivery of the specific content to a webpage/site and for configuring the specific content of the webpage/site, respectively. A marketer is enabled to configure the specific content via the system using the web-page tags and is also given the ability to embed automatically generated content which reflects the entire web-branch of pages that are accessible from the specific link. The system further enables zooming between one or more websites, or groups of web pages to access the embedded content.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer program products for consolidating Web pages displayed in multiple browsers at a computer processing device are provided. A method includes generating an information file in response to initiation of a browser instance and creating a file record for each web page accessed during the browser instance. The file record includes session history data for each web page. The method also includes consolidating each of the file records from the information file with other file records from another information file created in response to another browser instance. The method further includes displaying a single view of browser activity corresponding to the browser instance and the other browser instance resulting from the consolidation.

Abstract: A document publishing system. Documents can be automatically linked. Links are automatically created within a document to other documents, or to locations within the same document.

Abstract: A category pair is generated in a round-robin fashion for all of categories by obtaining each category of a document directory, each category of a bookmark, and a URL registered to each category from each of a document directory storing unit and a bookmark storing unit, and the degree of similarity is calculated for each category pair. Next, a pair of categories whose degrees of association are high is selected from among all of category pairs, and a URL candidate to be recommended each other is extracted for each selected category pair.

Abstract: Methods for recognizing strings, labeling the strings with a semantic category and providing e-commerce actions based on the category is disclosed. The semantic category may include a type label and other metadata. Recognizer plug-ins perform the recognition of particular strings in an electronic document. The recognizer plug-ins may be packaged with an application program module or they may be written by third parties to recognize particular strings that are of interest. Action plug-ins provide possible actions to be presented to the user based upon the type label associated with the string. Tradenames, trademarks, formal names or types of consumer products may be labeled and actions to buy the products may be presented. The metadata may be used to implement coupon and affiliate programs to reward frequent shoppers or frequent recommenders. Numerous other e-commerce opportunities are presented via the semantic category and the metadata.

Abstract: A concept network that can be generated in response to a user query. In one embodiment, the concept network is being used with a search tool. The search tool searches a plurality of data storage locations. Each data storage location is arranged with a node. Certain ones of the nodes are connected by at least one link. The concept network selects a portion of certain ones of the nodes based on the link, wherein the at least one link is used for content purposes.
