Abstract: A method and system for improving the quality of original metadata associated with media on a computer network, such as multimedia and streaming media, includes analyzing each field of the URL of the multimedia and streaming media. Each field is analyzed to identify new metadata associated with that field. Identified new metadata is added to the original metadata. In another embodiment, the fields in the URL are reorganized in reverse order and metadata associated with a prefix of fields of the reorganized URL is added to the original metadata. In yet another embodiment, the contents of the field next to the prefix of fields is used to improve the quality of the original metadata.

Abstract: A system for displaying, on a computer screen, information concerning the interrelationships of documents. A system employing the present invention also allows for the efficient research of documents that cite a document shown on the computer screen. In one embodiment, the present invention involves displaying at least a portion of a first document and simultaneously displaying a representation of one or more citing documents. The citing documents cite some portion of the displayed document. In another embodiment, the invention involves displaying at least a portion of a first document, and displaying a representation of one or more citing documents, wherein the displayed citing documents cite the displayed portion of the first document.

The method may further include associating a person or entity with the selected region and sending a notification of the association the person or entity or a different person or entity. Abstract: The creator or author of the Web document or page at the Web site source of the page is enabled to prioritize all of the hyperlinks to other Web documents embedded in the Web page in order to optimize the needs such as the business needs of the host. The prioritization is applied in the determination of the order in which the Web documents linked to the activated embedded hyperlinks in the Web document are to be accessed. The system is implemented through the inclusion of a hypertext markup language tag associated with each of the prioritized hyperlinks indicative of the priority level of the associated hyperlink. The implementation for designating a priority level for each of the hyperlinks may be enabled to change any previously designated priority levels for said hyperlinks. Such changes in any previously designated priority levels could be made applicable to the priority levels in previously distributed copies of said Web document.

Abstract: Embodiments of a multi-screen bookmark hold gesture are described. In various embodiments, a hold input is recognized at a first screen of a multi-screen system, and the hold input is recognized when held in place proximate an edge of a journal page that is displayed on the first screen. A motion input is recognized at a second screen of the multi-screen system while the hold input remains held in place. A bookmark hold gesture can then be determined from the recognized hold and motion inputs, and the bookmark hold gesture is effective to bookmark the journal page at a location of the hold input on the first screen.

Abstract: Multiple computer devices are networked, and each computer device stores a bookmark database. A user can add delete or change bookmarks on any of the computer devices. Alterations made to a bookmark database are stored locally. Every alteration is time stamped. If a bookmark is deleted, it is marked as deleted, but not erased from the local bookmark database. Bookmark databases stored on other computer devices are unaffected by changes made to the bookmark database stored on the local device. In order to update and synchronize all the bookmark databases, the local device receives the data from all the other bookmark databases. Then, the time stamps for each bookmark are compared, and the bookmarks with the most recent time stamps are assembled in a new master bookmark database. The new master bookmark database is then sent to all participating devices in the network.

During operation, the system receives a user-specified tag that describes a data item. Based on user input, the system may define a relationships between the two tags, thereby facilitating the definition of a set of related tags for an organization.

Abstract: A method of allowing a portable device to provide a rich site summary (RSS) feed including information about renewal of contents, and an apparatus performing the method are provided. If contents of the portable device are renewed, the portable device generates an RSS feed for the renewed contents and sends the RSS feed to an RSS reader, and accordingly, a related art web-based RSS service is expanded to the portable device. Therefore, even if the user does not browse all contents of the portable device, a user of the portable device can easily see only information about contents that are recently updated using another device such as a personal computer (PC).

Abstract: An improved system and method for supporting web system services is provided for storing data and context of client applications on the web. A client application may include a web system services interface for invoking web system services to support web applications to operate over the web using different devices that may store data and context of web applications as a web application document onto a web server. A web application document may be represented by components that may include view information, content, and context information. The application may also include a web system services user interface for providing a graphical user interface for a user to invoke web system services that may include a new document system service, a store document system service, and a restore document system service. A schema for context scope may be implemented for collecting context information relevant to the web application document.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for receiving document images including portions linked to one or more electronic addresses. The linked portion of the document is identified using a predetermined visual attribute, such as bold-face text, or delimiters to mark the portion. The document image is then transmitted using, e.g., existing apparatus for transmitting images, such as a facsimile machine. An electronic address associated with the identified portion of the document is also transmitted using existing techniques, such as by touch-tone telephone. The address may be a voice telephone number, facsimile telephone number, World Wide Web address, or any other address with which communication can be established. At the receiving end, both the document image and electronic address are received. Pattern matching is performed on the document image to identify the portion with the predetermined attribute as a linked portion. The received electronic address is then correlated with the linked portion.

Subsequently, a web page category is determined based on the menu table stored in the central repository. A first computer device sends a data file to a web server which hosts the data file. The first computer device then synchronizes the bookmarks in its web browser application with the bookmarks in the web browser application of a second computer device to allow a bookmark associated with the web page link to also be created in the web browser application of the second computer device.

Abstract: A method of displaying and navigating information using a hierarchical, spring loaded DHTML menu system that adjusts to fit the boundaries of a resizable, container (FIG. 1). A set of standard HTML table row elements, having a hierachical dependency (11), is consistently displayed as a web-page, under reasonable resizing. This is done using a strut row that produces the largest width requirement when the table structure is resizing to occupy a small width. Only the current row elements and the strut element are required in calculating table resizing to ensure that whichever data elements are displayed when a web-page resizing occurs, the browser auto-layout algorithm calculations will result in a resize attributes that enables all other row elements of that menu to be accommodated by the newly determined table width. As the row elements may themselves be table structures, nested menus of information may be displayed and navigated (12).

Abstract: A method for marking hyperlinks, for creating an associated link spelling table, and for accessing the address of a marked hyperlink. A portion of text is selected and the hyperlinks of the selected text are identified. Then a link spelling table is created and a set of discrimination letter subsets characterizing each of the identified hyperlink is determined. Each discrimination letter subset is associated to the address of the corresponding hyperlink in the link spelling table, and the discrimination letter subset in each hyperlink of the selected text portion are marked. Then, to access the hyperlink, the user spells the discrimination letters that are then converted to extract the discrimination letter subset. The link spelling table is accessed to determine if the extracted discrimination letter subset belongs to the link spelling table.

Abstract: People are enabled to share tagged data via the Internet. In one embodiment, an Internet site receives, via the Internet, from various different users, content items of many different content types. The site also receives a tag for each content item and maps that tag to that content item. When other users supply search query terms, the site selects tags that match the search query terms. The site presents content items that are mapped to the selected tags. Using this technique, users are able to share with each other content items of all different content types using a single Internet site, without needing to store content items of different types on different Internet sites. In order to share a particular content item with other users, the user who wants to share the content item needs only to disclose the particular content item's tag to the other users.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for identifying the focus of a document, in a natural language processing application, the natural language processing application comprising a hierarchical concept tree having a plurality of nodes, each node being associated with a term, the method comprising the steps of: mapping an input document to nodes in a concept tree to determine a number of occurrences of a term in the input document which also occur at a node in the concept tree; weighting each node in the concept tree, depending on the determined number of occurrences of the term in the input document and a determined value assigned to each node in the concept tree; traversing the concept tree to identify a heaviest weighted path, in dependence on the weighting of each node in the concept tree; and determining the focus of the input document by identifying a node having the heaviest weight along the most heavily-weighted path.

After the error information associated with the client exceeds prescribed limits, the data entry restriction apparatus rejects structured documents from the client (step S3). Abstract: A system for client caching of target addresses for network requests includes one or more processors and memory coupled to the processors, where the memory stores instructions executable by the processors to implement an application configured to direct network requests received from users to target servers over the network. The application attempts to update a current version of a local data object storing network addresses, where the attempt includes sending an update request to a redirecting server over a network. If the attempt succeeds, the application accesses the updated version of the local data object to obtain a target address for a network request. If the attempt fails, the target address is obtained from the version of the local data object that existed before the update was attempted. The application directs the network request to the appropriate server using the target address.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method for creating citations for a document is disclosed. The method includes receiving, by a computer processor, text from a user via a keyboard in communication with the computer processor; displaying the text on a user interface on a display device in communication with the computer processor; receiving a symbol from the user via the keyboard, wherein the symbol is not part of the content of the text; displaying the symbol adjacent to the text in the user interface; retrieving, by the computer processor, a first list of citation references from a computer storage after the symbol is displayed in the user interface; displaying the first list of citation references at the user interface to allow at least one of the first list of citation references to be selected; and inserting the selected citation reference near the symbol in the text in the user interface.

Prominence data may be collected automatically when the user views a page or clicks on a hyperlink without requiring separate action from the user to accomplish storage or retrieval. The prominence data may further include a display parameter that denotes a level of prominence that is usable to affect the display of a hyperlink. A prominence score used to determine the display parameter may be calculated by dividing a count of click-throughs by a count of page views of the page containing the hyperlink. Other score calculations may be used. User feedback may be incorporated into the score calculation and may be collected through a toolbar, popup window, or other feedback-collecting mechanism.

Abstract: A method is disclosed for determining deviations of a modular end-system message, generated in a hierarchically structured end-system of a telecommunications device, from a reference message. A reference message is read, and an end-system message generated in the end-system is read. A message-structure analysis is performed for the reference message and the end-system message. Any deviations of the end-system message from the reference message are determined from the message structure and structural units of the end-system message that deviate from the reference message are output.

Quality recommendations are provided for sites of interest to the user and information about what types of people like the current website. Self-tagging is used as an effective means to perform personalized searches. Machine learning and reasoning is employed to predict self-tags based on a website visited and/or website behavior, and self-tags associated with a website and/or webpage based on content of that website and/or webpage. The architecture can be embodied as a browser utility to leverage and extend social-bookmarking information. The utility facilitates the display of information related to a summary view of the users who liked/disliked the current page or website, a tag cloud associated with webpages, and a recommendation button that causes self-tag recommendations to be displayed and that recommends links based on the combination of user tags and content.

The websheet includes data values stored in a relational database table. The table includes a first set of data values displayed in cells of the websheet in response to the client receiving the web page. Second set data values are not displayed in the websheet in response to the client receiving the web page. A form displaying the second set is received by the client. Second set data values are updated on the form to provide an updated websheet configuration. With its updated configuration, the websheet is displayed at the client and allows data entry to modify or add first set data values.

The hyperlinking process further identifies a plurality of subparts of the uniform resource locator. In this manner, each subpart represents a distinct location separately referenceable from a location referenced by the entire uniform resource locator. Additionally, the hyperlinking process receives a selection of a subpart of the uniform resource locator that identifies a selected subpart. In response to the selection of the subpart, the hyperlinking process references the distinct location associated with the selected subpart.
