Abstract: Document links may be efficiently managed by providing automated techniques for organizing them. In particular implementations, a system and process for automated management of document links may include the ability to determine that a link is to be established for a document and identify at least one descriptor for the document. The system and process may also include the ability to correlate the identified document descriptor(s) with at least one document descriptors in a pre-existing taxonomy of document descriptors and associate the correlated taxonomy document descriptor(s) with a link for the document.

Abstract: A method and system for enabling the display of portions of internet documents that have been highlighted by users of a highlighting service are disclosed. Accordingly, a highlighting service includes a web portal with a web page providing users with a snippet of code, which, when inserted into an internet document, causes the internet document to display highlights from the highlighting service. The snippet of code can be configured to query the highlighting service for highlights that were made by certain users, or, highlights made on documents from certain domains, and so forth. The code associated with the user interface object displaying the highlights can e configured to periodically query the highlighting service to retrieve up-to-date highlights, thereby dynamically changing the highlights appearing on a web page or internet document.

Abstract: A plurality of geographic locations can be individually associated with separate web pages by identifying and placing in a database geographic specific content. By linking geographic location to specific content housed within the database and then using that content to populate a hypertext markup language (HTML) web page template, a plurality of individual customized web pages can be created that are both indexable and extractable. Each level of data within the database comprises geographic specific data common to a region or location that is the focus of the web page. The structured nature of the database data enables web crawlers or indexers which are associated with various search engines to identify each specific level by way of the particular file much like that of a link within an existing web page.

Abstract: In a computing environment, a method for forming an association between a first data object and a second data object includes forming a first association fragment, where the first association fragment includes information relevant to accessing the first data object. The method also includes forming a second association fragment. The second association fragment may include information relevant to accessing the second data object. The first association fragment and the second association fragment cause an association to be effectively formed between the first data object and the second data object.

Abstract: The present invention provides for enhanced search results in response to a search request based on a search term. The enhanced search results generate a search results page including a plurality of document identifiers including a hyperlink and an abstract, each abstract including a plurality of abstract terms. The method and apparatus, upon receipt of the search request, accesses a relevancy factor database that includes relevancy factors. The relevancy factors are determined by accessing feedback logs for search results based on the same search term, calculating a popularity factor for each of the plurality of phrases in the abstracts and user selection activity and relevancy factors are based on the popularity factors. Thereby, the method and apparatus generates the search results page with the sequence of the document identifiers based on the relevancy factors.

Abstract: The illustrative embodiments of the present invention described herein provide a computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer program product for forwarding a reply email message. The process dynamically inserts email addresses associated with a plurality of recipients of an original email message and with an email address associated with the sender of the original email message into a recipient field of the reply email message. The email address associated with the sender of the original email message is identified to form an identified email address, wherein a copy of the reply email message is unsent to the identified email address. However, the identified email address remains part of the recipient field. In response to receiving a send command, the reply email message is sent to the email addresses associated with the recipient field excluding the identified email address.

Abstract: By the use of program scripts, databases, and other software elements, taking as input a set of text files making up a work of literature of substantial size, converting the files to an electronically-readable form, linking the files to each other to provide readers with a rich set of associations to be explored within the work, muting the presentation of the links in order to preserve the immersive character of the reading process, and simplifying the user browsing interface to limit distractions that vitiate the immersive reading experience. By the richness and simplicity of carefully-designed outputs, offering the author a new range of opportunities for engaging the reader, offering the publisher a new opportunity for succeeding in purveying electronic literature, and presenting the reader with an “electronic literary macramé”: a new class of work permitting a level of immersive reading practice obtainable only in the world of electronic text.

Abstract: A predictive travel log system using one or more ranking schemes to predict the location that a user would seek to navigate to through back and forward navigation in a web browser is provided. The navigation functionality can be exposed through traditional back and forward buttons with drop down travel log menus found in a browser user interface.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method can include accessing a network-accessible document that is formatted according to a hypertext markup language and that has a plurality of hyperlinks; producing a transcoded document from the network-accessible document; and providing the transcoded document to a computing device. Producing the transcoded document can include concatenating two or more of the plurality of hyperlinks to form a compression seed, compressing the compression seed with a compression algorithm to form a compressed seed, storing the compressed seed as a base hyperlink in the transcoded document, and compressing each of the plurality of hyperlinks.

Abstract: An information processing method displays information including at least one processing region subject to processing and displays a cursor on the displayed information. The method includes assigning the processing region to an operating element of an operation input device in accordance with a positional relationship between a cursor display position of the cursor on a display screen and the processing region, in the processing region on the display screen, displaying an operating element image representing the assigned operating element, and, in response to an operation input from the assigned operating element, executing processing corresponding to the processing region assigned to the operating element.

Abstract: A system and method to identify target node graphs from predetermined seed node subsets are described. A one-sided constrained spectral embedding of a graph using a predetermined set of seed nodes within the graph is computed. Next, a threshold boundary is identified to define a target area for a target subgraph within the embedded graph using predetermined network-flow calculations, the target subgraph including the predetermined set of seed nodes. Finally, the target subgraph is identified based on the calculated threshold boundary.

Abstract: A computer implemented method of processing an image for display on a mobile communication device includes extracting a portion of an image based on an image map. The image map relates to the portion of the image. The method also includes generating a document that comprises the extracted portion of the image and transmitting the generated document to a remote device for display. The method may also include assigning a selectable link to the extracted portion of the image and receiving a request from the remote device for an initial document having the image and image map. Additionally, the method may include storing in a database the generated document and transmitting the stored generated document in response to future requests for the initial document.

Abstract: A document creation method according to this invention includes an image capturing step of capturing image data of each page, a boundary image specifying step of specifying a boundary image serving as the boundary between sets of pages from image data captured in the image capturing step, and a document creation step of creating, on the basis of the image data captured in the image capturing step, an electronic document divided into different chapters at the position of the boundary image specified in the boundary image specifying step. The electronic document created in the document creation step is divided into a plurality of chapters, and boundary pages are set between the plurality of chapters.

Abstract: A method, apparatus and system for producing pinned bookmarks is provided. Hardware components of a computing device are enabled to process a browser application for retrieving browser data from a remote computing device and control a display device to display at least a first representation of the browser data. Positional data indicative of a selection of a portion of the first representation of the browser data displayed at the display device is received. The positional data is stored in the memory device in association with at least one identifier of the browser data and at least a subset of the portion.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for managing bookmark information of a media server through a network based on the UPnP AV standard is disclosed. If a request for bookmarking a content item is made, a bookmark item is created and the created bookmark item is linked to the content item by adding the ID of the created bookmark item to the property information of the content item and recording the ID of the content item to be bookmarked in the created bookmark item.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for managing bookmark information of a media server through a network based on the UPnP AV standard is disclosed. Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for a content-based navigation and launching for portable computing devices such as PDAs and smart phones. A content navigator and launcher allows a user to personalize content groupings. The techniques can run on top of any OS file system that has a mechanism to associate files with their creating applications. Personalization of the content-based navigation and launching scheme can be set-up on the user's work station, and then transmitted and synchronized with a target mobile device. A central server can be used to carry out content harvesting and/or configuring the personalization scheme. The content and/or personalization scheme can then be pushed on to the mobile device (e.g., via a GSM network or other suitable communication link). APIs can be used by application vendors to register the content types of their own choice. A preferences utility allows users to manage the content types and associations.

Abstract: A system for information retrieval from a collection of hypermedia data over a distributed network is presented. The system includes a data storage system that is a collection of hypermedia data. The collection of hypermedia data also has a number of hyperlinks to items of hypermedia content, and the hyperlinks are each respectively associated with at least one code value generated based on the content of the respective hypermedia content. The system also includes an application that receives progressive user input and iteratively build a user search code value according to the user input. It matches the user search code value to at least a portion of the hypermedia content code value for the hyperlinks in the data storage to identify each such associated hyperlink to a particular information retrieval data set.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method and device for selecting documents, such as Web pages or sites, for presentation to a user, in response to a user expression of interest, during the course of presentation to the user of a document, such as a video or audio selection, whose content varies with time. The method takes advantage of information retrieval techniques to select documents related to the portion of the temporal document in which the user has expressed interest. The method generates the search query to use to select documents by reference to text associated with the portion of the temporal document in which the user has expressed interest, as by using the closed caption test associated with the video, or by using speech recognition techniques.

Abstract: A system and method for managing subscriber usage of a packet network. The system may include at least one database configured to store network performance information of data packets including real-time content and non-real-time content communicated over a packet network. The database may further be configured to store the network performance information as related to respective subscribers of a communications carrier managing the communications network. In one embodiment, the database may include an indicia associated with each subscriber and the network performance information may be collected during communications by respective subscribers over the packet network.

The EDI report section can interactively present EDI reports for EDI source data. The EDI source section can interactively present EDI source data for which one of the EDI reports has been generated. The EDI reports and the EDI source data can be markup based documents. Each EDI report rendered within the EDI report section can include one or more hyperlinks. Each rendered hyperlinks can be mapped to a designated portion of the EDI source data.

The method includes: dividing a web page into regions based on the table structure of the web page; determining a specific hyperlink from hyperlinks in the web page based on information set in advance according to the user usage pattern; displaying the web page with identification information allocated to each region and the specific hyperlink. If a region is selected based on the identification information, displaying a web page with hyperlinks in the selected region. The bookmark collection includes representations of resources, topics, and notice events. A notice event includes a reference to a web resource and a natural language description provided by a user. The notice description is processed by a classifier to determine topics to which the referenced web resource shall be associated. The processing of the notice description includes parsing to obtain sequences of content words, to which topics are associated. Generalizations of a topic are determined by subsequences of the associated word sequence. The presentation of a collection of bookmarks includes a chronology of notices, a ranking of topics, a taxonomy of topics, and an index of content words from topics. The presentation further includes per-topic and per-resource presentations.

Abstract: A method, system, and apparatus are provided for converting numbers to text and to digit shapes expressed in different languages. When a string of text is entered into an application program, the string is analyzed to determine whether the string of text includes a number expressed using digits. If the string of text includes a number expressed using digits, the number is semantically labeled with schema information. When a selection is received of the number, a list of actions may be provided identifying conversion actions available for the number. One of the conversion options may then be selected resulting in the conversion of the selected number to text in one or more languages. A conversion option may also be selected for converting the number digits to digits expressed using other digit shapes. The converted number may then be inserted into the string of text to replace the selected number.

Abstract: A device for managing electronic bookmarks. The device includes an element implementing a main function of managing electronic bookmarks, activated at start-up and at determined instants, except when the device switches to a stand-by mode. The element implementing the main function includes: a transmitter, allowing transmission to a server a request to obtain a preconfigured list of bookmarks, wherein the request includes a log-in of the device; a receiver, allowing the preconfigured list transmitted by the server in response to the request to be received; a display, allowing the preconfigured list to be displayed; and an element allowing a user to use the bookmarks of the preconfigured list displayed. The device does not include an element that helps in initial construction of the preconfigured list on the server nor an element that helps to add to the preconfigured list at least one additional bookmark not previously proposed by the server.

Abstract: Generating and displaying an enhanced list of search results appropriate for web searching are described. A method for generating an enhanced list of search results includes identifying web pages that are relevant to a query, identifying other web pages hyperlinked to the relevant web pages, creating a graph of the web pages and connecting hyperlinks, and displaying a list of search results ordered in part by the connecting hyperlinks and showing the connecting hyperlinks as part of the list. The method also includes the ability to regenerate the list based on an indication of subjective relevance of a one of the list items. The method enhances the experience of a user in World Wide Web searching and browsing.

Abstract: A method for shortening a web page title. The method includes determining if a title of a current web page fits in a title display area of a display. If the title fits the title is displayed in the title area. If the title does not fit, it is determined if the title of the current web page starts with a same word as a title of a previous page. If the title of the current web page starts with the same word, at least one word is removed from a beginning portion of the title of the current page that is in common with the title of the previous page, until the title of the current page fits in the title display area, or there are no more common words in the beginning of the title. End words or letters or end words can be removed until the title fits. Missing words may be indicated by adding a predetermined indicator in the area of the missing or removed words.

Abstract: The disclosed system translates into different languages HTML documents available through the World Wide Web. HTML documents are translated by machine translation software bundled in a browser. Alternatively, documents are retrieved as needed, translated, and stored on a Web server so user requests are serviced with a document that has been translated from a different language. The disclosed invention expands usage of the Internet for non-English speakers.

Abstract: A method for facilitating a bookmark server to create a bookmark from content associated with a content source is disclosed. The method comprises a remote device selecting a portion of the content associated with the content source, based on an input received via a user interface. The remote device then generates metadata associated with the selected portion of the content. The metadata includes information pertaining to the content source and the content. The remote device communicates with the bookmark server, which can access the content associated with the content source. The remote device sends the metadata to the bookmark server along with a request message to the bookmark server to create the bookmark based on the metadata.

Abstract: A system, method and medium for utilizing a parameter hierarchy having state information to generate a uniform resource locator (URL). In one embodiment of the present invention, a method includes the steps of creating a component hierarchy that includes at least one component object associated with a web page, and creating a parameter hierarchy that includes at least one parameter object that includes state information respectively associated with at least one of said component objects. Finally, the parameter hierarchy is utilized to generate a URL that can render the component hierarchy.

Abstract: Additional documents are automatically located that are relevant to an original document, such as a document being read by a user, and also potentially relevant to personal information of the user. The additional documents may be located based on descriptive information that includes personal information of the user and content information of the document being read. The additional documents, or links to the additional documents, may be incorporated into the document being read. In some implementations, the additional documents may be presented in-line with the document being read, such as through an in-link link or text snippet. The user can thus be efficiently presented with additional information that is relevant to the original document being read.

Abstract: The present invention is directed towards systems and methods for bookmarking and tagging content items such as media files with user-defined tag information and system-defined tag information based on file types. Utilizing tag information, a user of a bookmarking and tagging service provider can easily search for and retrieve links to media files having specific tag information, even if the media files are located at geographically disparate sites. A user may also retrieve the media files using web feeds.

Contents of a separated widget can be displayed if the name of the separated widget is selected from the widget name list display interface.

Abstract: A system and method for determining a quantitative measure of qualitative usability of related Web pages. Web pages are accepted that each include at least one hyperlink referencing and proximal cues relating to distal content included in another Web page. An information goal identifying a target Web page is specified. An activation network is formed. A directed graph including nodes corresponding to the Web pages and arcs corresponding to the hyperlinks is built. A weight is assigned to each arc to represent a probability of traversal of the corresponding hyperlink based on a relatedness of keywords in the information goal to the proximal cues included in the referenced Web page. A traversal through the activation network to the node corresponding to the target Web page is evaluated as a quantitative measure of usability.

Abstract: A web crawler system as described herein utilizes a targeted approach to increase the likelihood of downloading web pages of a desired type or category. The system employs a plurality of URL scoring metrics that generate individual scores for outlinked URLs contained in a downloaded web page. For each outlinked URL, the individual scores are combined using an appropriate algorithm or formula to generate an overall score that represents a downloading priority for the outlinked URL. The web crawler application can then download subsequent web pages in an order that is influenced by the downloading priorities.

Abstract: An information display device accesses URLs of a plurality of bookmarks in a group at a time by only selecting the group, instead of selecting each bookmark, and displays in accordance with information on a display window stored for each bookmark. Interfaces are provided for creating, localizing, documenting, maintaining, displaying, and supporting messages and message-related data in a message catalog consistent with the message catalog schema. Notifications to owners of the messages and conditions is performed periodically or whenever a change has been detected.

Abstract: A method of characterising a web site by sampling, the method comprising, the repeated steps of: accessing a URL; receiving a web page; analysing the URL and received webpage and recording characteristics thereof; identifying links within the received web page; grouping links within the received web-page based on proximity; and selecting one of the selected links for subsequent access based on the grouping. The method can be applied in a web application assessment tool.

Abstract: Preloading of web pages is described. In an implementation, an apparatus comprises a processor and storage. The storage includes program instructions that are executable by the processor to load a first web page in response to a selection by an operator and identify a link in the first web page pointing to a second web page. The program instructions are further executable to automatically preload the second web page based on the identified link, the second web page preloaded for later presentation.

Abstract: A system produces a storage area network resource management report view by obtaining at least one report definition containing report parameters that specify a report layout for presentation of data in the graphical user interface. The system receives a report request to view data in a report view and obtains a data set corresponding to the report request. The data set includes data values to be presented as the data in the graphical user interface. The system applies the data values in the data set to the corresponding report parameters in the at least one report definition to populate the report layout specified by the at least one report definition to dynamically generate at least one report view. The system provides the at least one report view for rendering in the graphical user interface. The system also provides the ability to create custom report views without requiring programming language skills.

Abstract: There is disclosed a network print system which aims at printing high-quality image data of, e.g., a form or the like generated using a Web browser. When a form image is displayed on a Web browser of a client, and its print process is instructed, the instruction is sent to a server. The server searches a form template storage unit for an appropriate template, merges it with data by an image generation unit, converts the merged data into PDL data by a print output unit, and prints the converted data as a high-quality image from a printer.

Abstract: Techniques for finding related hyperlinked documents using link-based analysis are provided. Backlink and forwardlink sets can be utilized to find web pages that are related to a selected web page. The scores for links from web pages that are from the same host and links from web pages with numerous links can be reduced to achieve a better list of related web pages. The list of related web pages can be utilized as a feature to a word-based search engine or an addition to a web browser.
