  • Patent number: 6579499
Abstract: A pin replicator is disclosed for dispensing minute volumes of liquid onto a substrate surface in an array in connection with drug discovery, diagnostic analysis, and other applications. The pin replicator comprises a base plate, a plurality of pins reciprocable through corresponding holes in the base plate, and a free floating weight plate resting on top of the upper ends of the pins. The weight plate biases the pins toward their fully extended lowered positions. A cover attaches to the base plate, encloses the pins and weight plate and guides the weight plate during vertical movement thereof. The pin replicator can be moved downwardly toward a first micro titer plate so that a lower end of each of the pins contacts the sample liquid in the corresponding well a sufficient amount to pick up and retain a small quantity of the sample liquid due to surface tension.

Abstract: In this invention we describe a magnet or magnetic material that is attached to a pipette to hang it on a ferrous or magnetic material. The magnet can be attached to any place on the pipette in such a way that the pipette can be hung as desired on the magnetic or ferrous surface such as ferrous clips, iron or steel sheets (refrigerator, lab bench, hood etc.). This will help to organize the laboratories. Furthermore this will reduce the contamination from pipette to pipette and sample to sample.

Abstract: The present invention is a disposable apparatus for the rapid, low-volume solid phase extraction of analytes from a variety of sources. The apparatus of the present invention is configured as a pipette tip and contains a loosely confined stationary phase. Abstract: A fluid dispensing system and method includes a pump to aspirate and expel sample fluid, a fluid dispensing tip, and a metering station. The fluid dispensing tip includes a working fluid and an air gap where the air gap separates the working fluid from the sample fluid. The metering station receives a drop of sample fluid that is at least twice as large as the predetermined volume to ultimately be dispensed. The fluid dispensing tip then withdraws the predetermined volume of fluid from the sample fluid. Precise volumes are ascertained by prior knowledge of the geometry of the fluid dispensing tip and by using an imaging device to monitor an interface of either the sample fluid or working fluid with the air gap within the fluid dispensing tip. The system and method are capable of accurately dispensing very small volumes of sample fluid on the order of 10 picoliters. In addition, the system and method do not require large volumes of sample fluid to prime a pump mechanism.

  • Patent number: 6482364
Abstract: The present invention provides for techniques for transporting materials using electrokinetic forces through the channels of a microfluidic system. The subject materials are transported in regions of high ionic concentration, next to spacer material regions of high ionic concentration, which are separated by spacer material regions of low ionic concentration. Such arrangements allow the materials to remain localized for the transport transit time to avoid mixing of the materials. Using these techniques, an electropipettor which is compatible with the microfluidic system is created so that materials can be easily introduced into the microfluidic system. The present invention also compensates for electrophoretic bias as materials are transported through the channels of the microfluidic system by splitting a channel into portions with positive and negative surface charges and a third electrode between the two portions, or by diffusion of the electrophoresing materials after transport along a channel.

Abstract: A pipetting station having a bottom sensing device is provided in conjunction with one of any known liquid level sensing devices. The bottom sensing device includes a pipetting probe spring mounted to a pipetting arm of the pipetting station. The bottom sensing device also includes a sensor for determining when a pipetting tip of the pipetting probe is in contact with a bottom of a tube. The bottom sensing device permits the pipetting probe to measure an exact volume of fluid in the tube by allowing the pipetting tip to be lowered to the bottom of the tube beyond the sensed fluid level.

  • Patent number: 6343717
Abstract: A pre-filled disposable pipette for pharmaceutical and cosmetic products which has a hollow, round pipette body (40). The body consists of a hollow, rigid bulb section (44) forming a reservoir for storage and dispersion of the liquid pharmaceutical or cosmetic product which is pre-filled within the body. The body (40) further includes a hollow tubular section (46) that is smaller in diameter and contiguous with the bulb section, for ease of handling the pipette. The preferred embodiment has a hollow, frangible upper tube (42) with a distal end that is sealed for introducing air into the body (40) when the seal is broken, thus releasing the liquid from the tubular section. The liquid is dispensed from the body by breaking the upper tube allowing air to enter the pipette with the liquid flowing by gravity. The second embodiment has a resilient bulb section and omits the upper tube. A tapered section (90) is added to the tubular section, with a hollow tip (86) on the end.

A piston is mounted around the open end and an air plug is mounted in the piston adjacent the open end. Liquid in a test tube is transferred to a testing site by inserting the transfer device into the test tube. As the piston contacts the liquid, the liquid is pumped into the tube. As the transfer device is inserted further, the air plug is actuated to balance air pressure across the piston. The device may then be withdrawn from the test tube and transported to a test site. At the test site, the plunger is depressed to expel the liquid into a testing device.
