Tendon-like tension members extend along said elongate member and are spaced apart from one another around said elongate member, one end of each of said tension members being to said elongate member at said one end thereof. Guides spaced apart along and secured to said elongate member and slidably engage said tension members for guiding said tension members relative to said elongate member. Further tension members extend along only a portion of the length of the elongate member and are secured to the elongate member at a location intermediate the ends of the elongate member. Winches are used to wind and unwind the tension members to correspondingly control the length and the bending of the elongate member.

  • Patent number: 5315917
Abstract: A monoport airgun for seismic exploration has a single discharge port extending continuously for 360.degree. around its longitudinal axis. This airgun has a first housing providing a firing chamber containing pressurized gaseous fluid (gas) and a second housing providing an operating chamber. The first and second housings are positioned in alignment along the longitudinal axis. They are spaced apart along this axis for defining the discharge port between them extending continuously around the axis. The two housings of the monoport airgun are interconnected solely by a guide member concentric with the axis. A shuttle encircling the guide member is movable therealong between closed and open positions. In closed position, the shuttle closes the firing chamber for retaining pressurized gas therein. In open position, the shuttle opens the firing chamber to the discharge port for allowing pressurized gas to blast from the firing chamber through the discharge port.

Abstract: A bellows actuator has at least one bellows chamber comprising at least three chamber segments arranged around an axis. Each of the chamber segments forms a radially outwardly extending protrusion comprising four chamber wall portions, which merge with one another along fold lines which extend peripherally and radially of the bellows chamber and converge radially outwardly to meet at radially outermost apexes of the chamber segments. The bellows actuator is expansible and contractible along the axis by flexure of the wall portions relative to one another about the fold lines in response to pressure changes within the bellows chamber.

  • Patent number: 5125324
Abstract: A hydraulically operated device including a single-acting cylinder having a piston for operating a working tool, a pressure chamber for applying a hydraulic pressure to the piston from an original position to an operated position, and a return spring for biasing the piston toward the original position. The device includes a hydraulic pump for delivering a pressurized fluid to be fed into the pressure chamber of the cylinder, and an automatic drain valve for inhibiting the pressurized fluid from being discharged from the pressure chamber while a difference by which a delivery pressure of the pump is higher than a pressure in the pressure chamber exceeds a predetermined value. When the difference becomes smaller than the predetermined value, the automatic drain valve is operated to allow the pressurized fluid to be discharged from the pressure chamber. Thus, the automatic drain valve automatically drains the pressure chamber when the pump is turned off.

  • Patent number: 4232584
Abstract: The invention provides a control valve having a valve piston and coacting valve sleeve for flow control in booster power steering systems of the kind having a servo steering pump and a metering pump, especially as used in motor vehicles having power steering cylinders. The valve piston and valve sleeve have novel rings and grooves that effect a throttling flow control as the valve piston is shifted in steering, which substantially reduces vibration or chatter of the valve, permits ready return to neutral of the valve piston and the danger of cavitation in the power cylinder precluded. The dimensioning of special rings on the piston coacting with rings in the valve sleeve produces the advantages of the invention particularly when the valve is controlling high pressures.
