Abstract: An electromagnetic tracking method includes generating an electromagnetic field (14) in a region of interest (16). The electromagnetic field is subject to distortion in response to a presence of metal artifacts proximate the electromagnetic field. An array of reference sensors (30,50,102,104,110) having a predefined known configuration are disposed proximate the region of interest. A first set of locations of the array of reference sensors is determined with respect to the electromagnetic field generator (12) in response to an excitation of one or more of the reference sensors via the electromagnetic field. A second mechanism (28), other than the electromagnetic field, determines a first portion of a second set of locations of at least one or more sensors of the array of reference sensors with respect to the second mechanism, the second mechanism being in a known spatial relationship with the electromagnetic field generator.

  • Patent number: 7289913
Abstract: Local features such as cracks in materials are nondestructively characterized by measuring a response with an electromagnetic sensor and converting this response into a selected property using a database. The database is generated prior to data acquisition by using a model to generate a baseline response or field distribution for the sensor and combining these results with another model, which may be simpler than the first model or provide a local representation of the field perturbations around a feature, which is evaluated multiple times over a range of values of the selected property. In addition, the presence of a feature may be detected by converting the sensor response into a reference parameter, such as a lift-off factor that reflects the sensor position relative to a material edge, and using this parameter to determine a reference response that can be compared to the measured response.

  • Patent number: 6931353
Abstract: A method of predicting the performance of certain electromagnetic devices is based on the integrated average core loss (IACL) and the integrated average relative permeability (IAP) of the electromagnetic core material used in the devices. The method includes the steps of establishing the range of induced magnetic fields over which the device is designed to operate, measuring the core loss and relative permeability of the core material over the range of induced fields and calculating the IACL and IAP over the range. Performance parameters can then be predicted using equations based on the IACL and the IAP with coefficients and constants derived through linear regression analysis.

  • Patent number: 6924150
Abstract: A method for improving the magnetic resonance imaging contrast of a selected portion of a sample. A selected ferrimagnetic constituent is associated with the sample portion, by molecular or biological attachment or by some other means, so that the sample portion is distinguished from other adjacent portions of the sample that do not have the selected ferrimagnetic constituent associated therewith. Alternatively, the sample portion is suspected, but not yet confirmed, to have the selected ferrimagnetic constituent associated with it. Ferromagnetic resonance imaging is performed on the sample portion, and at least one resonance frequency ?0 of the sample portion is provided. At least one material parameter of the sample portion is measured at or near the frequency ?0, with enhanced imaging contrast relative to adjacent portions of the sample that do not have the selected ferrimagnetic constituent in association.

Abstract: On a single chip are formed a plurality of magnetoresistance effect elements provided with pinned layers having fixed magnetization axes in the directions that cross each other. On a substrate 10 are formed magnetic layers that will become two magnetic tunnel effect elements 11, 21 as magnetoresistance effect elements. Magnetic-field-applying magnetic layers made of NiCo are formed to sandwich the magnetic layers in plan view. A magnetic field is applied to the magnetic-field-applying magnetic layers. The magnetic field is removed after the magnetic-field-applying magnetic layers are magnetized in the direction shown by arrow A.

Abstract: A coated electric wire is wound around a detection circuit in a planar manner for the purpose of electrostatic shield. This winding is performed, for example, spirally in a single layer. In the case where there are further provided a detection circuit board including a detection circuit and a cylindrical case, the coated electric wire is wound around the detection circuit board in a planar manner, wherein the direction of the axis of the cylindrical surface accords with the direction of the axis of the case. Consequently, there can be provided a sensor device in which the detection circuit can be electrostatically shielded with ease.

  • Patent number: 6675645
Abstract: A device for measuring thin films and bulks is disclosed using slow-wave structures in electrodynamic elements to allow a decrease in frequency, an increase in sensitivity to electromagnetic parameters and accuracy of their monitoring. A method is also disclosed for monitoring of materials which includes placing an electrodynamic element near a monitored material and exciting an alternating electromagnetic field at an appropriate frequency to penetrate the monitored material concentrating in a small volume. Electromagnetic field parameters are then measured which are caused by the material parameters variation and said variations are converted to electromagnetic field parameters, the element being excited by an electromagnetic field in the form of at least one slowed electromagnetic wave.
