  • Patent number: 8267911
Abstract: A flow-through fluid reservoir includes a body with a first fluid port, a member movable within the body by an actuator to increase or decrease a volume of a chamber defined by a sidewall of the body. The actuator has a second fluid port. Movable member has a fluid path therethrough such that fluid ports are in fluid communication irrespective of the position of the movable member or the volume of chamber. A shaped slot on the shell of the actuator and a projection on the body cooperate to constrain relative movement of the body and actuator along a path corresponding to the shaped slot. The slot advantageously may include a stop intermediate therealong. A canted aspect of the slot may be used to initiate relative movement of the member within body. The body includes an end wall through which the first fluid port communicates. A shroud is defined by a coaxial extension of the sidewall beyond the end wall to surround the first fluid port, and gripping elements may be provided on the shroud.

  • Patent number: 8162915
Abstract: A connector for packings containing medical liquids, particularly infusion, transfusion or enteral bags, comprises a connecting part (1) for accommodating a spike for drawing out the liquid and comprises a closure part (3) that closes the passage (2) inside the connecting part (1). The connecting part (1) has an elastically deformable pinching off part (4) provided in the form of a tubular section with a non-circular cross-section. A base part (5), which widens on both sides is adjoined to said pinching off part (4) and can be integrated in the packing. During manufacturing, the packing is filled with liquid via the connecting part. After filling, the pinching off part is pressed together whereby preventing liquid from escaping. Afterwards, the closure part is placed onto the connecting part. The manufacturing of the packing is simplified by virtue of the fact that an additional tube for connecting the connector and packing is rendered unnecessary.

  • Patent number: 8163184
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed that allows for separating and collecting a fraction of a sample. The apparatus, when used with a centrifuge, allows for the creation of at least three fractions in the apparatus. It also provides for a new method of extracting the buffy coat phase from a whole blood sample. A buoy system that may include a first buoy portion and a second buoy member operably interconnected may be used to form at least three fractions from a sample during a substantially single centrifugation process. Therefore, the separation of various fractions may be substantially quick and efficient.

  • Patent number: 8157747
Abstract: A single-use indicator is provided and is particularly well suited for use with a surgical catheter device. The indicator includes an absorbent filament or wick which is placed in a transparent or translucent indicator lumen of a multi-lumen catheter. The lumen is provided with at least one side port. When the catheter is inserted into a blood vessel, blood enters the indicator lumen through the side port and is absorbed by the filament, thus turning the filament red or purple in color. When the instrument is removed from the blood vessel, the stained filament is clearly visible as an indicator that the instrument has been used. Because the filament is trapped inside a lumen of a relatively long catheter, it is difficult or impossible to remove it during a remanufacturing process.

  • Patent number: 8147440
Abstract: The present invention consists of a blood reservoir that incorporates a separate chamber designed to trap condensing water vapor. The blood chamber and the vapor trap are in fluid communication along their top assuring that vacuum applied to the top of the vapor trap is equally applied to the blood chamber. The combination is also structured to prevent condensate water accumulating in the vapor trap chamber from overflowing into the blood chamber as well as provide a structure that allows the end user to empty the water in the vapor trap chamber.

  • Patent number: 8142384
Abstract: A blood tube system for extracorporeal uses, such as dialysis devices, wherein an arterial expansion chamber including a lower region for receiving blood, in which a blood inlet channel terminates, and from which a blood outlet channel extends, and an upper region for receiving air, where a venting channel provided with a venting valve extends from the upper region. The blood tube system includes a central region of the expansion chamber which has considerably reduced cross-sectional dimensions, the blood level being adjustable by means of the venting valve in such a manner that blood/air contact takes place in the central region. The amounts of heparin and EPO needed for a dialysis treatment can thereby be reduced.
