Abstract: A method for analyzing hidden dynamics, includes acquiring discrete observations, each discrete observation having an observed value selected from two or more allowed discrete values. A factorial hidden Markov model (FHMM) relating the discrete observations with a plurality of hidden dynamics is constructed. A contribution of the state of each hidden dynamic to the discrete observation may be represented in the FHMM as a parameter of a nominal distribution which is scaled by a function of the state of the hidden dynamic. States of the hidden dynamics are inferred from the discrete observations based on the FHMM. Information corresponding to at least one inferred state of at least one of the hidden dynamics is output. The parameters of the contribution of each dynamic to the hidden states may be learnt from a large number of observations. An example of a networked printing system is used to demonstrate the applicability of the method.
Abstract: Systems and methods are described that facilitate calculating toner consumption by a printing device. A multi-dimensional transform is applied to electronic image data to map or correlate toner consumed in a non-interacting color separation to toner consumed in an interacting color separation, for each of a plurality interacting color separations (e.g., C, M, Y, and/or K). Optionally, a one-dimensional linearization technique is performed on the image data before and/or after transformation. Image data resolution may be reduced to generate continuous-tone image data. A summed or average toner consumption value is output for each or all separations for user review.
Abstract: An image processing method in which OCR is used to guide the text tokenization. More particularly, OCR is first performed on each symbol in the scanned image. For example, a symbol may be a number, letter, or other character. During the tokenization process, the OCR results are used to select appropriate matching criteria for each symbol. The symbols that are recognized as different characters are not allowed to be clustered into the same group. The symbols with the same OCR results are clustered according to the recognition confidence levels.

Abstract: Methods are provided for creating a fluorescent watermark within an image on a substrate, such as paper. The method involves creating a halftone image using two different halftone strategies. The halftone method is combined with a binary watermark mask to form two color patterns (e.g., one in a background region of the image and one in a watermark region of the image) and two successive-filling halftone algorithms, such that the ink droplets deposited by one color pattern cover more of the substrate than the ink droplets deposited by the other color pattern, with the two color patterns having approximately the same reflectance under normal light. However, under UV illumination, a visible difference (e.g., the watermark) is seen in the two patterns.
Abstract: A method for authenticating an operator of an AP includes: registering the operator's identity with a CA, by providing the operator's identification information and public key; creating a certificate including the foregoing; signing the certificate with the CA's private key; provisioning the AP with the signed certificate; provisioning a client with the CA's public key; sending a request from the client to the AP; generating a signature with the operator's private key; returning a reply to the client, including the AP provisioned certificate signed with the generated signature; using the client provisioned CA's public key to obtain the operator's public key from the certificate received in the reply; and, using the operator's public key obtained from the certificate received in the reply to verify the signature generated with the operator's private key and used by the AP to sign the certificate received in the reply.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for detecting a region of interest in an image are disclosed. Image representations for a set of images that have been manually annotated with regions of interest are stored, along with positive and negative representations of each image which are similarly derived to the image representations except that they are based on features extracted from patches within the region of interest and outside it, respectively. For an original image for which a region of interest is desired, the stored information for K similar images is automatically retrieved and used to train a classifier. The trained classifier provides, for each patch of the original image, a probability of being in a region of interest, based extracted features of the patch (represented, for example, as a Fisher vector), which can be used to determine a region of interest in the original image.
Abstract: Document processing systems and duplex printing methods are presented in which side 1 to side 2 process magnification errors are compensated for by selective use of two raster output scanner clocks for latent image generation of images destined for first and second sides of a printed substrate, with the second clock speed being increased to compensate for substrate shrinkage due to fusing station heating for two-sided printing.

Abstract: A composite system comprises a base layer, a capping layer, and at least one core geocell layer. The base layer and capping layer are staked below and above the core geocell layer, which is infilled with a low quality material. In specific embodiments, the base layer and capping layer are each geocells infilled with a high quality material. This composite system meets engineering specifications economically.
Abstract: A roofing system formed of a plurality of support members secured to a load bearing roof deck. A plurality of roofing panels are positioned on the support members and are oriented to form overlapping joints between the panels. Sealant is positioned within the overlapping joints of the panels. A compression bar is positioned over the overlapping joints and is secured to the overlapping joints and support member by a fastener arrangement.

Abstract: A light source with substantially constant intensity and power consumption is provided. The light source includes a controllable dc voltage and current source; a non-linear light-emitting load supplied with dc voltage and current from the controllable dc voltage and current source; a current sense circuit connected in series with the non-linear light-emitting load; a variable LED forward voltage (varying with temperature, binning batch, aging) sensor circuit; a multiplier operative to measure a power-representative signal; and a power consumption control feedback circuit through which the dc voltage and current source is controlled in relation to the variable forward voltage representative signal to adjust the dc voltage and then a current to amplitudes that keep the light intensity and power consumption produced by the light source substantially constant.

Abstract: An apparatus and method facilitate combined query based searching with serendipitous browsing in a multimedia collection. A user selects objects to label from a local map, which may include representations of objects retrieved from the collection as being responsive to a text or image base query. The text and image portions of the object can be independently labeled. Unlabeled objects are scored and ranked based on the applied labels of labeled objects, which may take into account cross-media pseudo-relevance and user selectable (or default) parameters, such as a forgetting factor, which tends to place greater weight on more recently labeled objects, and a modality parameter, which laces greater weight on the modality (text, image, or hybrid) currently selected by the user. The local map is modified, based on the ranking, optionally after reranking of objects to improve the diversity of the displayed objects.
Abstract: An automated ophthalmic system is disclosed that is utilized to examine the eyes of a subject. A refraction system measures the refractive error of each eye and identifies a lens to correct the refractive error detected. A display presents one or more optotypes to the subject to ascertain the refractive error. An interface device receives a wireless signal from the refraction system, converts the wireless signal into one or more ASCII characters, and communicates the one or more ASCII characters to the display to present the one or more optotypes.
