  • Patent number: 4516878
Abstract: Tunnels are constructed by freezing soil and removing frozen soil between starting and end shafts of the tunnels. Tunnels are driven in an uncomplicated manner in rapidly changing soils without auxiliary construction means. A hole is bored in or near the planned axis of the intended tunnel between starting and end shafts. A soil freezing work pipe is inserted into the hole. The pipe is cooled by a cooling agent. The soil freezing work pipe continues to be cooled until an ice and frozen soil mass has formed around the work pipe, which frozen mass has a diameter which is larger than that of the planned tunnel. Frozen soil is subsequently excavated, leaving a frozen soil lining, which is immediately supported by a primary support lining or a permanent lining.

  • Patent number: 4515678
Abstract: Blast furnace flue dust is used as a catalyst in a process for the hydrogenation of coal. A flowable mixture of finely divided coal particles and liquid hydrocarbons is brought to high pressure and to reaction temperature. The mixture is hydrogenated with hydrogen in the presence of blast furnace dust as a hydrogenation catalyst. The cost-effective hydrogenation catalyst is reused profitably subsequent to application in the coal hydrogenation process.Gaseous products are separated from liquid and solid reaction products. Liquid products are vaporized and are fractionated under atmospheric pressure and under vacuum. Hydrogen for use in the hydrogenation is produced by partial oxidation of the residue, and the catalyst is deposited as slag, which is returned to the blast furnace.

  • Patent number: 4512502
Abstract: Ice is stored for dispensing in a semicylindrical bin. A cone-shaped wire auger is mounted on radial extensions from a sloped axle near the bottom of the bin. A large flyte of the auger pushes ice from the rear of the bin toward smaller flytes near the front of the bin. Distal ends of generally radially extending fingers sweep an opening in the front of a bottom wall. Interchangeable plates with varied size openings control dispensing rate from the bin. The large flyte pushes the ice toward the front where some of the ice drops through the dispensing opening and some of the ice is recirculated upward. Ice clusters near the dispensing opening are broken by the fingers which extend generally radially and slightly rearwardly from the axle on which the conical auger wire is mounted.

  • Patent number: 4510665
Abstract: A beverage insulation container having a wider diameter base than sidewall sleeve created by wrapping unicellular foam around a round disk and applying a vinyl coating to the sidewall to taper the sidewall sleeve above the round disk serving as the base. A hole is cut through the sidewall sleeve near the base end of the container for preventing a vacuum from forming, thereby allowing a beverage container to be withdrawn from the holder by twisting the container and simultaneously pulling the container out of the sidewall sleeve.

  • Patent number: 4505502
Abstract: A magnetic catch holds a door in the open position. A cup-shaped metal element is supported for universal rotary motion in a plastic housing mounted on the door. A flat end of the element projects through an open end of the housing and contacts the exposed edge of a rectangular permanent magnet when the door is opened. The magnet is sandwiched between steel plates supported in the rectangular cavity of a plastic housing which is mounted on the floor or wall adjacent the door. A foam cushion resiliently biases the metal element away from the door. The magnet housing is supported on a hollow pedestal extending from a base. Mounting screws are stored inside the pedestal. Threaded plates screwed to the door and wall or floor mesh with threaded open ends of the metal element housing and the pedestal base respectively.

  • Patent number: 4496203
Abstract: A drill pipe section enables electrical information signals to be transmitted along a borehole to feed information generated by instruments situated adjacent to the drilling bit along the drill string to monitoring and/indication equipment situated adjacent to the drilling machine. The section comprises a generally cylindrical housing member and a liner member fixedly mounted inside the housing member with an air gap defined between the two members. An electrically conductive element extends between two electrically conductive, annular coupling components one of which defines a radially inwardly directed coupling margin and the other of which defines a radially outwardly directed coupling margin.

  • Patent number: 4494703
Abstract: A magnetic endless tape is made with a half of a normal tape width to avoid the tape housed in the housing from being pressed with unreasonable force; and a reel is provided with flanges as its upper and lower sides and a tape rolling-up wall of the reel is inclined to a V shape with respect to the upper-side flange, thereby making the reverse of the tape possible so that a portion of the tape may be rewound when the cassette is inverted without trapping the rewound portion between the normally upper flange and the layers of tape wound on the reel.

  • Patent number: 4493207
Abstract: Tracer emission sources which emit tracer gas at a predetermined constant known rate are distributed throughout a building. The preferred source is a small vessel containing a vaporous perfluorocarbon tracer (PFT) substance having a very small bore hole in the top through which the PFT vapor can escape. Time is permitted for the tracer gas to mix uniformly throughout the building and for its concentration to equilibrate with infiltrating air. The concentration of the tracer is then measured and compared to the known volume of air in the building to determine the infiltration rate. In the preferred mode, the concentration is integrated and measured by continuously sampling the tracer gas at a constant rate on activated charcoal adsorbent over a period of several weeks.
