  • Patent number: 5674586
Abstract: A pressure tolerant composite panel has an inner fiber reinforced layer, an outer fiber reinforced layer and an core disposed therebetween. In one embodiment of the invention, the inner layer has weakening structures incorporated at the peripheral edges thereof, and has an outer layer of a different and lower modulus of elasticity than the inner layer to provide some degree of elongation. When high internal forces are encountered, the weakening structures allow the inner layer to separate, with the outer layers stretching to absorb the forces without failure. Optionally, strengthening straps are position about the panel such that it is compartmentalized into discrete sections to contain damage in localized areas. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the inner core is produced of a crushable material which has a yield strength sufficient to provide structural support under normal operating conditions.

  • Patent number: 5669340
Abstract: The two-cycle engine is constructed with a flywheel having pockets spaced about the periphery. The flywheel receives charges of combusted media at spaced apart points so as to rotate the flywheel. Each piston/cylinder arrangement for delivering power to the flywheel cooperates with a spring-biased counter-piston whereby after ignition, the counter-piston moves away from an associated piston to permit exhausting of the combusted mixture into a pocket of the rotating flywheel. The spring stores the energy caused by combustion and delivers the energy into the flywheel during exhaustion of the combusted mixture.

  • Patent number: 5669891
Abstract: The female luer connector is constructed with a floating hollow needle. The needle is mounted within a collapsible tubular member with the distal end of the needle fitted into a recess of a septum integral with the collapsible member. The hollow needle is free to move transversely relative to the housing and a rigid tubular part of the connector. Eccentricity of the septum relative to the rigid tubular part is avoided and insertion of a male connector automatically aligns the septum and needle with the longitudinal axis of the rigid tubular part. Various arrangements are provided for anchoring the flange of the collapsible tubular part between the housing and rigid part in seal-tight manner.

  • Patent number: 5671309
Abstract: The object of the present invention is to provide a wide-band optical fiber coupler whose light-branching ratio is independent of the wavelength of light rays to be transmitted therethrough as well as a method for preparing the wide-band optical fiber coupler. When an optical fiber 1 having zero-dispersion at 1.55 .mu.m band and an optical fiber 2 having zero-dispersion at 1.3 .mu.m band are fused and drawn to form a coupled portion 3, a light beam 15 is incident upon the optical fiber 2 and the intensity of the light beam outgoing through either of these optical fibers 2 or 1 is measured to detect the light-branching ratio observed at the coupled portion 3. The drawing operation is interrupted at an instance when the detected light-branching ratio falls within the range of 50.+-.5%.

  • Patent number: 5667308
Abstract: A dynamic pressure bearing device for use in a motor including a shaft and a frame. Two bearings interconnect the shaft and the frame of the motor. The two bearings contain a noncompressible fluid. A mechanism for minimizing axial vibrational movement of the shaft is part of the bearing device. In one arrangement, the mechanism is a device connected to the shaft, such that a narrow gap is defined between an end of the device and the frame to provide a flow resistance to the noncompressible fluid. The device connected to the shaft maintains a decreasing width to minimize a loss of torque in the motor.

  • Patent number: 5667309
Abstract: A bearing seal system having a bag structure in a first embodiment wherein (1) oil is filled in a tapering bag space section positioned from the bag section to an exit section; (2) the space in the tapering space section is kept to 0.8 mm or less the slope angle of the outer end of the tapering space section is kept to 45.degree. or less. In this way, oil is kept from air and a stable no-leak status is made possible; (3) the capacity of the tapering space section is made larger than that of a bag section or a radial bearing section in order to retain oil in the bearing section at all times and to prevent oil from leaking as a result of variations in the quantity of oil injected or in the capacity; and (4) the space ratio of the inner end and the outer end of the tapering space section is made larger to prevent oil from moving to the bearing section even when air migrates into the oil surface.

  • Patent number: 5664318
Abstract: A process and an arrangement are described for determining reference positions for planar hybrid stepper motors having a stator which is provided with a structure and a rotor which is supported thereon in air bearings. The process includes the following steps: The rotor is set down on the stator and the air supply for the air bearing is switched on. The rotor is brought into an alignment position in a working connection with at least two defined, stationary mechanical stops or with displacement-free electrical contacts manually or by mechanical or electrical auxiliary device or in a self-propelled manner. The air supply for the air bearing is then turned off in order to fix the rotor in this alignment position and the rotor is then so supplied with current in sequence in a defined manner and the air supply to the air bearings switched on in such a way that the rotor is brought from the alignment position into a reference position which is aligned with respect to the stator structure.

  • Patent number: 5664679
Abstract: A transport container for wafer-shaped objects to keep particles away from and remove them from the interior of the transport container when opening the latter, in particular also those particles located in the door gaps, without restricting handling. Cleaning in the form of a self-cleaning process should also be effective when a plurality of transport containers are stacked one on top of the other and the latter should be optionally accessible. At least parts of the rear wall region of a closable container enclosure are constructed as a plenum chamber which has a closable air inlet and a closable air outlet in the base region and cover region, and a connection is formed from the latter to the interior of the container via a filter. The air inlet is constructed so as to complement a connection of a gas reservoir and an air outlet of an additional transport container for coupling. The arrangement is applicable in the manufacture of integrated circuits.

  • Patent number: 5665613
Abstract: A SIMOX substrate 1 is processed through high temperature oxidation treatment after forming a mask-pattern 3 to shield specified electrodes from oxidation in order to increase partly a thickness of a buffed oxide layer 2 to form an area 4. Next, after an oxide film is removed from the surface of the substrate and LOCOS separation is practiced, MOSFET is produced by fabricating a source S and a drain D on the area 4 or the buffed oxide layer 2. Since the buried oxide layer corresponding to electrodes parts influenced by disadvantages of parasitic capacitance are thickened, an operation speed of an inverter is not much decreased and since mean thickness of the buried oxide layer can be thinner, a decrease of a drain electric current by negative electrical resistance can be suppressed. Furthermore, since the thickness of the buffed oxide layer can be controlled in response to each device, plural devices having different breakdown voltages are formed together on the same substrate.
