    Abstract: In a processor executing instructions from a variable-length instruction set, a preload instruction is operative to retrieve from memory a data block corresponding to an instruction cache line, pre-decode instructions from a variable-length instruction set in the data block, and load the instructions and pre-decode information into the instruction cache. An instruction execution unit indicates to a pre-decoder the position within the data block of a first valid instruction. The pre-decoder successively determines the length of each instruction and hence the instruction boundaries. An instruction cache line offset indicator that identifies the position of the first valid instruction may be generated and provided to the pre-decoder in a variety of ways.

    Abstract: Techniques for use in CDMA-based products and services, including replacing cache memory allocation so as to maximize residency of a plurality of set ways following a tag-miss allocation. Herein, steps forming a first-in, first-out (FIFO) replacement listing of victim ways for the cache memory, wherein the depth of the FIFO replacement listing approximately equals the number of ways in the cache set. The method and system place a victim way on the FIFO replacement listing only in the event that a tag-miss results in a tag-miss allocation, the victim way is placed at the tail of the FIFO replacement listing after any previously selected victim way. Use of a victim way on the FIFO replacement listing is prevented in the event of an incomplete prior allocation of the victim way by, for example, stalling a reuse request until such initial allocation of the victim way completes or replaying a reuse request until such initial allocation of the victim way completes.

    Abstract: Intermediate results are passed between constituent instructions of an expanded instruction using register renaming resources and control logic. A first constituent instruction generates intermediate results and is assigned a PRN in a constituent instruction rename table, and writes intermediate results to the identified physical register. A second constituent instruction performs a look up in the constituent instruction rename table and reads the intermediate results from the physical register. Constituent instruction rename logic tracks the constituent instructions through the pipeline, and delete the constituent instruction rename table entry and returns the PRN to a free list when the second constituent instruction has read the intermediate results.

    Abstract: A memory device that can provide good timing margins for read and write operations is described. In one design, the memory device includes a memory array, a timing control circuit, and an address decoder. The memory array includes memory cells for storing data and dummy cells to mimic the memory cells. The timing control circuit generates at least one control signal used for writing data to the memory cells and having timing determined based on the dummy cells. The timing control circuit may generate a pulse on an internal clock signal with a driver having configurable drive strength and a programmable delay unit. The pulse duration may be set to obtain the desired write timing margin. The address decoder activates word lines for rows of memory cells for a sufficiently long duration, based on the internal clock signal, to ensure reliable writing of data to the memory cells.

    Abstract: A technique for reducing lookups to a branch target address cache (BTAC) is disclosed. In this technique, a branch target address is retrieved from the BTAC in response to a miss in looking up an instruction address in an instruction cache (I-cache). The branch target address is associated with the instruction address. The branch target address retrieved from the BTAC is stored in the I-cache. With this disclosed technique, subsequent instruction addresses are looked up in the I-cache, nonparallel to the BTAC, thus saving power by reducing needless BTAC lookups.

The conditional instruction obtains the prior value of the target (that is, the value produced by the most recent instruction preceding the conditional instruction that updated that target). The condition is evaluated. If the condition is satisfied, an operation is performed and the result of the operation output to the target. If the condition is not satisfied, the prior value is output to the target. Subsequent instructions may rely on the target as an operand source (whether written to a register or forwarded to the instruction), prior to the condition evaluation.

    Abstract: In one embodiment taught herein, a memory module selectively uses its write data mask input as a status output on which it provides status signaling to an associated memory controller. The memory module configures its data mask input as a status output at one or more times not conflicting with write operations. Correspondingly, the memory controller configures its write data mask output as a status input at such times, for receipt of status signaling from the memory module. In one embodiment, the memory module maintains a status register related to one or more operating conditions of the module, such as temperature, and signals status information changes to the memory controller by driving the module's data mask input. In response to such signaling, the memory controller initiates a read of the module's status register to obtain updated status information, and takes appropriate action, such as by changing the module's refresh rate.

Instruction fetching continues when the branch condition is evaluated in the pipeline and the actual next address is known. Alternatively, prefetching may continue out of a cache. To avoid displacing good cache data with instructions prefetched based on a mispredicted branch, prefetching may be halted in response to a weakly weighted prediction in the event of a cache miss.
