Abstract: Methacrylic acid and butyrolactone are manufactured by hydroformylation of allyl esters of lower carboxylic acids in the presence of rhodium catalysts and inert organic solvents, followed by oxidation of the resulting formyl compounds with molecular oxygen (e.g. with air) in the presence of lower fatty acids, without prior removal of the rhodium catalysts, and elimination of the carboxylic acid from the acyloxybutyric acids formed, at from 150.degree. to 500.degree.C, using catalysts such as aluminum oxide, silicates or active charcoal.

Abstract: An apparatus for guiding a span of high speed magnetic tape past the recording/transducing head which utilizes a low volume lubricating air film to virtually eliminate the sliding friction between the guide itself and the magnetic tape. The periphery of the guide is slightly concave to permit the formation of an air film while permitting the tape to retain a desirable flat cross section and also facilitating a seal between the edges of the tape and the convex peripheral surface of the guide to isolate the lubricating air film from the atmosphere in order to reduce the supply of compressed air required. The design also enables the utilization of boundary layer air being dragged along by the tape to supplement the compressed air supply to further reduce the volume of air required.
Abstract: A process for the manufacture of a modified titanium-containing component of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst for the polymerization of C.sub.3-6 .alpha.-monoolefins, wherein a specific titanium-containing compound and a specific phosphorus-containing compound are dry-milled at a specific grinding acceleration in a vibratory ball mill. The characteristic feature of the process of the invention is that a mill is used which has a specific useful volume and the mill is initially charged with a specific amount of the titanium-containing compound, which is milled at a low temperature while the phosphorus-containing compound is gradually added, whereupon milling is continued while the temperature of the process material is gradually raised to a specific value and maintained at said value for a specific period of time, whereupon, if desired, milling is again continued at a lower temperature for a specific period of time.

Abstract: A magnetic tape cartridge having at least one tape pack contains liners which form guide channels for the outer turns of the pack and/or for magnetic tape being wound or unwound and also include resilient sections for locating the tape pack and/or the winding hub in the central plane of the cartridge. The magnetic tape cartridge of the invention can be used with particular advantage as a compact cassette beacause of its outstanding reliability in operation.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of polymers of net-shaped crosslinked structure and with uniform length of the crosslinks. In this process, polyfunctional organoalkali metal compounds which have been manufactured by reaction of divinylbenzene with low molecular weight organoalkali metal compounds, are reacted direct, or after prior reaction with anionically polymerizable monomers, with bifunctional or polyfunctional coupling agents. The polymers of net-shaped crosslinked structure have macroporous properties and can be employed, for example, as gels in gel permeation chromatography or as carriers in the synthesis of peptides.
