  • Patent number: 4044300
Abstract: A method of checking a storage battery with series-connected cells comprises the steps of:Passing a charging current pulse through the battery,Measuring an elementary transient voltage at the terminals of each storage cell; andComparing elementary transient voltages with the average transient voltage of the said storage cells (total transient voltage divided by the number of storage cells). The battery is rejected if the absolute value of the difference between the said average transient voltage and one of the elementary transient voltages, when the difference maintains a constant sign, becomes higher than a predetermined threshold and, when the difference changes signs, if the sum of the maximum absolute values of the differences in constant sign becomes higher than a predetermined threshold. Application: checking lead-acid storage batteries when they come off the production line.

  • Patent number: 4044356
Abstract: In a double correlation device incorporated in a radar installation for muring distance, the transmitted high-frequency signal is modulated, by frequency displacement, by a series of pseudo-random pulses. The first correlation is carried out between each pulse of the series and a delayed version of the series, the delay being chosen to correspond to the distance zone to be swept. The resulting signal undergoes a second correlation with the signal received after reflection from the target and controls a switch in order to deduce information on the distance investigated.

  • Patent number: 4043354
Abstract: A drain trap and cover assembly adapted for installation at the upper end of a vertical drain pipe passing through the concrete floor comprises a cup-shaped bowl having a flange at its upper end to which is pivoted a cover swingable between bowl-closing and bowl-opening positions. The pivotal connection comprises a pivot pin carried by the cover and rotatably accommodated in a socket formed in the flange. The socket has a throat which opens into the socket, the size of the throat being slightly less than the diameter of the pivot pin. The material from which the flange is made is sufficiently resilient to enable the throat opening to be enlarged and allow passage from the pivot pin into the socket, following which the throat opening reassumes its normal size to capture the pivot pin within the socket.

  • Patent number: 4042929
Abstract: In a system for use in helicopter navigation antennas are carried at the e ends of each of the blades of the rotor of the helicopter. Radio waves transmitted by a beacon at a known location on the ground are received by the antennas and phase modulated by their rotation. On the rotor the signals are amplified and mixed with oscillations from local oscillators and are detected with the aid of reference signals from the local oscillators. By means of slip rings and contact brushes the signals are introduced into the body of the helicopter where they are first multiplied with each other and then filtered so as to produce phase-modulated signals with a carrier suppressed which are supplied to an electroluminescent diode illuminating a rotating-disc light modulator with a light-transmitting function which is analogous to the phase modulation of the signals received by the antennas. The light beam passing through the disc is integrated in a vidicon and displayed on a screen.

  • Patent number: 4042060
Abstract: An air-lift vehicle has inner and outer multi-lobed peripheral skirts arranged so that the corresponding lobes of the skirts are in register. Means is provided to supply compressed air to the inside of the inner skirt and between the inner and outer skirts for lifting purposes. The space between the skirts comprises a plurality of compartments each defined by two corresponding lobes of the inner and outer skirts. The lower edges of the lobes of the outer skirt at least are located in the same horizontal plane as a result of which the height of lift and the stability of the vehicle are improved.
